Posting the patent number would be enough to go find it. The one I found was dated 1898 and must have been an earlier version. Again, very cool vice! I would be torn between using it and keeping it just for it's... errrr... coolness! Maybe a compromise.... someplace in the garage where it will...

Cool vise you have there! Does the label have a patent number? I just did a quick search on Google Patents for a "removable jaw hanson vise" and it returned a very similar (but not the same) vise with the same forked jaws. It even had a hand crank drill attachment.

This from the build thread where there was low ceilings but the guy wanted a lift? If we are talking the same picture(s) there was a shot before drywall (showing trusses) and then after. Sorry don't know where to find them... but I remember the idea was a good one.

The stuff your looking for is tannic acid based. You can get tannic powder and dissolve it in alcohol, brush it on. It first turns purple, then flat black. It chemically converts Iron Oxide into Iron tanate which is stable. It does need a top coat with something tho.... it is not durable. Two...

Piston pin removal was my guess too. Nifty little strip to hold it in a vice so you have a hand free for the rod, the other to turn the press screw. From the days before full floating pins were common.
