I used something like this container below by removing the spigot and cutting the hole large enough for the cartridge. Then the hose goes in the other side. Thus, the hose and the cartridge are all contained, and I have no more drops on my floor to slip on! The carry handle is handy as well.

Any chance you have the license plate from the previous owner? I used the old plate on my pickup box trailer and went to the state DMV site. Was able to find the VIN on the trailer that way, which helped with getting it titled and registered in my name. I know you said plates aren't required...

I use Dawn when cleaning carbs in my ultrasonic cleaner and motorcycle parts in my parts washer. It has worked well. I do try to clean off as much external grease and grime beforehand, either mechanically or chemically. I do use Palmolive in my window-cleaning concoction...2 gallons hot...

When we got rid of our old dishwasher, I kept the rack used for silverware. Looks kind of like the one shown below. Funnels get set into the rack, and I have the rack set on an old metal baking sheet to catch drips. No mess, no fuss!
