    Need help selecting GTAW machine

15-2000 is very reasonable, you can get the miller diversion 180 ac/dc for about $2k new. If youre looking for used try an xmt or dynasty. You could get a really nice machine for your budget.

For mechanics: 6 point and 12 point sockets

Same thing on Cat 3406c with the 3/4” 12 point head bolts. Theres a few i cant get a 3/4 drive or an impact on and i can crack a few 1/2 drive chrome sockets in short order. Pawn shop to the rescue on that one, i just keep a few craftsman around at all times and replenish them as they break.

For mechanics: 6 point and 12 point sockets

90% of what i do is 6pt, but i carry a few 12point sets for certain things. 1/2 drive shallow metric from 10mm-32mm, standard from 3/8 to 1 1/8. I also keep a few snap on 5/16 and 8mm deep in 3/8 12 point for turbo bolts ( snap on chrome deep are the only kind that can fit in certain recesses)...

High torque vs mid-torque cordless impact thoughts

The high torque is 6lbs plus the battery, an IR 2135 or CP is 4lbs. Plus the milwaukee/dewalt is longer. I think theyre a cheap way to get a decent powered impact if you dont have air, but if you have a half decent compressor, air is the way to go.

    best grinder for welding prep?

I probably have a dozen 4.5” grinders floating around the shop. The $50-60 makita or dewalt last a long time and are easy to handle. When i go out on a job i usually carry 3 - one with a cutoff wheel, one with a grinding wheel and one with a flap disc or knotted wire wheel. It saves alot of...

    Aviation snips recommendations

Lenox are my favorite, wiss are also good, both will last a long time if youre not using them to cut wire or trying to cut thicker sheet metal.

    AlphaTig 200x query

^It actually runs flux core really well on anything less than 1/4. I put my coarse setting in the 150 range and dial in the fine adjustment to get my voltage right. Ive done .035 solid with with gas before on 1/2 plate. With a little tuning of the dials it came out acceptable. I was running...

Tell me what you like & don't like about your US General tool box

I have a 44” us general i bought new about 2 years ago for a shop box. Ive since removed the casters and mounted it in an enclosed trailer for mobile work. They are really tough boxes and its held up well in an abusive work environment. The only complaint is that if you load the top drawer...

    AlphaTig 200x query

Should work just fine, there is a switch inside the 12vs to select cc or cv. I used to run a 12vs on older miller big 40’s and aead type engine drives with no problem. If your tig can do stick welding just set it on stick mode, if not, turn off hot start/lift arc so your running on scratch start.

3/4 impact set that skips sizes?

Sometimes for disassembly its easier to put a 9/16 or 3/4 socket on the 3/4 gun and snap the head off than screwing with it for an hour. Think of 2 pieces of steel held together with a 1/2” bolt (3/4 hex) its easier to snap the head off and punch out the rest than it is to find a way to loosen it.

3/4 impact set that skips sizes?

Shop ebay, i have down to 9/16 in 3/4 drive. Or buy a set and fill in the ones that it doesnt include.

    Snap On Box Sanity Check

I would say thats a fair deal, not exactly an “i need to score some crack” kinda deal but totally reasonable. If i bought it i would remove the 2 cabinets and put them elsewhere in the garage. Hopefully they were mounted in a good way and not hung on there with self tapping screws (seen that...

Best inexpensive tools for automotive trade school

I bought a whole tool set used from a retired mechanic when i got started in the trade. Alot of craftsman, stanley, sk. I started upgrading and adding to that set from the trucks as I needed things. The old tools are good quality, but the problem with 40 year old stuff is they will wear out...

Tool kit for a semi-truck and trailer.

Most fittings for air lines on the truck and trailer will be SAE. If its an isx cummins, most of that will be metric. You should carry a 12 point 1/2 impact swivel for u joint straps in case you need to pull a driveshaft to get towed. 3/4” extra deep socket or 3/4 gearwrench for caging brake...

This bit came with some gunsmithing screwdrivers. What's it used for?

Looks like a breech plug wrench for a muzzleloader. I have a cva .50 cal that uses that tool to unscrew the breech plug for cleaning.

    Help me pick a welder

I see the Miller thunderbolts are only 4-500 now. That’s a nice little machine to get started with and works on 120v or 240v.

    Flatbed build for cheapskates

Also I would add reverse lights. He has some cobbed up idea of putting a light bar back there. So we left those out and left him a pigtail so he can do what he wants with it.

    Flatbed build for cheapskates

I figure about 15-20 hours labor with paint so probably 32-3500. If I did diamondplate for the decking, stake pockets on the sides and added some more lights, $4000.

    Flatbed build for cheapskates

Thanks. Totally slick as ice. We did put some texture in the paint, but still pretty dicey. I would prefer diamondplate or oak boards personally.
