Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

Yeah, a sliding door could be in the cards. At 13' wide you still do run into the posts when you are working on the sides of the car - by taking out a post you give yourself room to work on all sides of the car without interference. Honestly at this point I'm contemplating just leaving it...

Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

The floor of the loft is 13 feet wide, making the loft floor joists (which are indeed 2x8) around 13 feet wide as well. And yes, you're correct that the 2x8 as well as the whole loft is sagging. Up near the walls it is most stout and as you get to the middle of the barn it droops visibly (if...

Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

Good question... I'm in Indiana so we do get snow but it's not usually a LOT.

Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

Thanks for all of the input everyone. Are you ready for it to become even more ridiculous? I just checked and that rim joist running the length of the loft is only a 2x8.. 😮 Yuck... It sounds like doing ANYTHING at all will help strengthen the loft - I'm curious if that post is really...

Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

A good thought - like adding an additional garage door? So that navigating around the beams may not be needed? It's definitely a consideration but is one that I'd need to make after deciding how long we will be here - the barn is still in the right shape to be used for future horses with the...

Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

I'm glad you pointed it out (the loft supporting the roof) because it didn't really occur to me until I took more of a look. It's interesting that it would pass inspections as-is!

Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

Yep, I knew it wasn't done right. This barn was built back in 2005 and I've found evidence of corners cut along the way. I had the floor poured 3 years ago around the posts (the floor was originally dirt for the horses). I'm not sure if the posts are even set in concrete. The posts are only...

Yep, pictures were too large. I've screenshotted them to reduce size.

Might have been - but it still gives me a "something went wrong" error when trying to upload pictures. Hopefully the google drive link above works for now!

Ideas for removing supporting posts in barn?

Evening all! I've been working on converting a horse barn into a shop where I can do some word working and car projects. I've put in a drive, a floor, added a 500sqft insulated/conditioned room in 1/3 of it, and now I'd like to look into opening the space up a bit. As you can see in photos...

    Finished Concrete Sealant Question!

Just as a final update to this -- the splotches have almost completely worn away -- the concrete looks uniform now. So that problem has solved itself! I ended up finishing a separate room inside the barn (~500sqft) and am looking into throwing on some floor polish/wax for added protection...

    Finished Concrete Sealant Question!

Hey rebel -- I'm ultimately not sure. I'll try to contact and get more information on what was used... Just didn't think it through at the time that it was being applied.

    Finished Concrete Sealant Question!

Update: Talked to contractor. His response is that this is normal, the discoloration is the result of the sealer 'going away', and that eventually all parts of the floor will even out to uniform color. If anyone disagrees or has additional thoughts let me know!

    Finished Concrete Sealant Question!

Evening All! I'm new to the forum here and have just put in 200+ hours of work to renovate a horse barn, turning it into a shop. Concrete was poured 9 days ago, and I am happy with the result, with one potential exception. The contractor asked if I wanted to have the slab sealed, and given...
