The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Had to spend a couple of days on other projects. Moved a playground and a dome jungle gym from an old school. It’s part of my little girls 2 year birthday present. Now to get some sand around it so she’s not covered in mud when she plays. Also, I made a rule I wasn’t going to work on anything...

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Shop progress. I have not managed to get a full weekend of work on the shop the past few weeks. Life has been pulling me in multiple directions. We are still making progress though. Got the front wall framed and ready to be sheeted with Osb and vinyl siding. Got all of my hinge plates welded on...

    Mezzanine Help 15x30

By free standing are you meaning no attachment to your shop and a totally independent structure?

Let's set some trusses... No, not happening..

I was worried about the cement trucks getting stuck when they poured my slab. We had a wet winter and I had one trash hole that I had dug out and filled with good dirt, it was still too soft for my comfort and right where the trucks needed to drive. I laid a board road out of some rough sawn oak...

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Thanks, I wouldn’t trade a thing for my to little ones. I hope they have as much fun out in the shop as I do. My 2 year old little girl already loves the shop. She comes out and helps daddy and papa work. She definitely looks like she has been working when she gets done. I like thinking outside...

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Thanks. People keep asking me when I plan on having it done and I tell them I have no clue. I don’t have a deadline and I am having a blast building it with my dad. The big push was getting it all under roof so now we always have some area to work no matter the weather. I have plumbing stubbed...

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

More progress. Got the back wall of the loft framed, as well as the back wall of the shop area. We put a half wall on the front edge of the loft looking over into the shop. My dad has named the loft “the crows nest”. It will have a moveable gate over the large opening so I can set stuff up there...

Lift to be installed. Control joint put in way

Just slide your lift forward or back to clear your joint by 6 inches. Seen this in many shops, I have seen lifts right on top of the joints but I would only do this if I had good rebar in the slab.

Buying a scissor lift for my 16' tall shop JLG or Genie

I bought a deal on a 19 ft rough terrain lift when I started building my shop. It is an oddball brand, can’t recall the name right now but it’s made in Wisconsin I think. It’s very simple, the controller is all basic off the shelf switches, no crazy joystick controller that is proprietary. It...

Garage true cost to build..... Post your info

Currently in the process of building my shop, 33x91 total area, 33x72 slab size, 15 ft walls, 24 ft peak. Built mostly from reclaimed, recycled material. Main framing is steel with some wood in the mix. Will be insulated with a mix of foam and fiberglass roll insulation like they use in red iron...

Help on garage ceiling height increase

I agree, sistering 2x material on the sides of the trusses would be the route I would go. With your hip roof design you wouldn’t be able to do this in the hip area, but you said it’s a 3 car so just move your lift down to where it is out from under the hip. Sistering onto your existing trusses...

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Weekend update. Had a good Father’s Day weekend, spent it working with my dad on the shop. Friday we got the roof all stripped out and got the fascia on so we were ready for roofing Saturday. Had a buddy come over Saturday and the three of us put in a good day and got it all roofed. I was...

Working from home as a mechanic (auto repair)?

When I closed my shop I kept all of my equipment other than my lift. I kept one commercial landscape account and did 90% of their work out of my basement. The big jobs like engines and clutches got sent to the shop I went to work at. They had a 10 truck fleet plus I took care of the owners...

Entry point for a drill press

Face book, Craigslist, gov deals. Buy the biggest heaviest older American machine you can find, afford, and move. You won’t regret it. The speed selection and quality can’t be beat. I have a big powermatic I’m into for about 200 bucks and a 45 min ride to pick it up.

How did you decide how tall to make your garage?

Minimum I would ever go would be 10 ft doors, I know most people think a 10 ft door is huge but you never know where your life will take you. I drive a ford van with a high top roof like an ambulance. It takes 9’6” minimum. I don’t need the high roof but I love it. If I was ever in the situation...

Working from home as a mechanic (auto repair)?

I have been in the auto industry 20+ years, grew up working at a shop at a guys house. He had a great setup, 4 bay shop was at the front of his property but still hardly visible from the road, no signage, and didn’t look like a full on car repair shop. His house was on the back of the property...

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Thanks, I figure if they can handle the weight they put in a box truck they should have no problem holding up some wood and roofing. I got lucky I had some long rails and didn’t have to piece them, actually cut about 5 feet off of them.

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Thanks y’all, 2 kids definitely takes a lot of time. I am lucky to work 4, 10 hour days and have fridays off. Gives me time to work on the shop and time with the family. Had a pretty productive weekend of work, just my dad and I. Got the decking finished, knee walls built and roof structure...

The scrap shop 33x91 in Georgia

Progress. Took a month or so break from working on the shop to get settled into life with a newborn and a 20 month old. Definitely will not have as much free time anymore, but wouldn’t trade it for anything. We got the floor framed up for the loft and got about half of the decking down so far...
