I'm planning on building a free standing 15x30 mezzanine in the back of my shop as a base for an apartment. I'm wanting to put the mezzanine up and then stud frame a bottom and top level as opposed to standard load bearing walls with 2x6 studs on bottom and 2x4 on top. My initial questions are what size corner/center posts and what size boards to use for floor joists. I was thinking of 2 15" 2x12s glued together with 2x12 floor joists and 4x6 posts in the corners and one on each side of te mezzanine at the 15' mark.

By free standing are you meaning no attachment to your shop and a totally independent structure?
