I used a winch setup like the one above with this little guy I made up to pull my mill off the trailer. Just lagged it to the floor, have used it a few times since for other pulling jobs.

I would reccomend a smooth top as the diamond plate would be very uneven as a work surface, and at worst be tough to keep clean.
