    Wiring 10,000 watt heater

Thanks guys, I think I'll go exchange for the 7500 watt heater instead. That one uses 31.3 amps, so 125% is 39 amps. Then I can use a 40 amp breaker on my 8ga wire. And just to safely future-proof it I think I'll spend the $50 to run another 8ga wire to the other side of the garage. The 7500...

    Wiring 10,000 watt heater

I used NM-B. I thought I saw somewhere that it was good to 50 amps. That's so weird that the heater would say right on the box to use 8ga wire. Oh well, I'll try the smaller 7500 watt heater instead. Who knows, that one might be enough on its own for all I know. I see many reviews that say it...

    Wiring 10,000 watt heater

Trying to heat the garage in my new house. I'll only heat it very occasionally when I need to change oil or some other small project so I decided to go with electric. Garage is 872 sq ft and I bought the Thermosphere 10,000 watt heater from Northern Tool. It will be fully insulated, 2x4 walls...

Advice for attached garage on new home

My wife and I are in the process of downsizing. Home, garage, yard, stuff. We're building a brand new home, and I'm just looking for advice. The new lot is much smaller so I'm limited on size. The maximum I can go on the garage will be a 3-stall at 32' wide and 26' deep, and the third stall...

    24'x28' in Minnesota

Welcome to the site, and congrats on the new garage. At my last house I built a 24x28, and that served me well for 10 years. Plenty of room for working on 2 vehicles at the same time. Have fun.

    When to start floor heat?

:withstupi I leave mine on year round. Why would I ever turn it off? If it's warm out, it won't run. If it gets cold, then I want it to run. Besides, my controller will automatically cycle the system for 5 minutes per 24 hours (or something like that, maybe it's 5 min/week I can't remember)...

Heating Qs if using part time in winter

Good advice so far. At my last house I had a 700 sq ft detached with a forced air gas furnace. At first I would just leave the heat off when I wasn't working out there, and then just crank it up when I needed it. When I rurned it on it only took an hour or so to get the air up to 50* or so, but...

    Descaling a tankless heater

The controller I have on my system (Taco I think) will run the system for a few minutes every day even in the summer. Although I was told that this is more to keep the pump from freezing up during months of non-use than for stagnant water isssues.

Need new garage door opener- recommendations?

I've had very good luck with the Genie screw drive ones. I used a couple at my old house for 15 or so years with no issues, and now at my new house I've put in 3 new ones a couple years ago. One of them is an "Xcellerator" model, which I really like. Pretty quiet (quieter than the steel door)...

What unique features did you do or wish you had done when planning you garage?

The best "unique" thing I like about mine is that I combined the shed into it. This may not apply to you, but it worked great for me. Basically my detached garage is 28' wide by 48' deep, but the back 14' is separated into another room. So now I have a 28 x 14 shed, and a 28 x 34 shop, but from...

    drywall mud dust

I'm guessing you've already sanded? And that's where the dust is from? In my shop, I just opened all the garage doors and used the leaf blower. Worked great.

    worklight with cord reel ??

I have 2, both Craftsman 20 or 30 foot, like the #73942. Mine are just the incandescent ones, and I put the twisty compact fluorescent bulbs in them. Work good for me. I started out with the cheap $20 craftsman reels, man those things ****!

Running multiple 220 outlets on one circuit?

I just ran 2 welder outlets. One at the back by the bench, and one at the other end close to the door. I just ran them on separate breakers, even though I'll likely never use them both at the same time. Between those two I can reach just about anywhere in the shop without an extension, and even...

    Another Compressed Air Option

Yeah, thanks for the info. I plan on plumbing my shop for air some time this summer too, and those would definitely come in handy in certain places. Kinda funny but I just saw those last week at Home Depot and thought "hmmm, interesting" but I didn't have time to stop and really check them...

Gas line, Propane, or 240V to power heater for Garage?

I ran 1/2" at 2 psi out to my shop/garage. Mine is about 100 feet, copper. Not sure if it's an option for you, but on mine running it at 2psi allowed me to get away with smaller tubing. Obviously I needed a regulator out in the garage to get it down to 1/2 psi, but it was still cheaper than...

    Manly windchimes

I was just thinking about a burning rubber one! Or racing gas! Both are sure to keep women out of the garage. I'm with the ManLaw guys on the windchimes though.

Tool project for a 5 year old?

Wow, these are some great ideas! I had no idea about the HD kids days either. My 5 y.o. has been expressing an interest in tools lately too, and I thought about building a birdhouse with her, but if they have something like that at HD already that might be just the ticket. So far she HATES HD...

water heater in your garage w/glycol

I'm running 50% RV antifreeze and 50% de-ionized water. Not in Canada, but Minnesota, so probably not TOO different on the weather.

    Scorpions!

Sometimes it's not so bad living where it gets cold! :headshake Last summer we were visiting my in-laws in Oklahoma, and my 4 y.o. daughter comes running in the rec room crying, "daddy, there's a little baby lobster in the hallway". :yikes: Sorry, don't mean to hijak, but we thought it was...

    Concrete Floor Insulation

When I got mine 2 years ago, it was around $20 per 4x8 sheet of the 2" Type 250 foam at the local Menard's. Mine took about 50 sheets, so yeah, that was $1000 that I hadn't really planned ahead for. It hurt at the time, but I'm sooooo glad I did it now.
