    Basement waterproofing

All good advice, thank you and looks like contractor is following these things. One confusing thing is the way they have installed the membrane. In the picture below you see the top is below the bottom. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? They said the water needs to go behind but to me, it’ll...

    Basement waterproofing

Thank you. do you this should also be tested once they've laid out all the gravel, should I test by by using a garden hose to pour water perhaps into the opposite area where the sump pump is or no need. It's a 25x25 basement so wonder how many hours will it take for water to get to the sump...

    Basement waterproofing

Folks - we had done exterior waterproofing but it didn't do a 100% job especially with very large rain events in NYC so now doing indoor with one sump pump and a channel throughout. Can you check pics to see if it's ok? They only did the demo on the tiles this morning and looks like they didn't...

    Air sealing 100yr old home

Won't that kill the attic ventilation as it's air coming from the soffits? All the roof eaves have been sealed from inside the 3 bedrooms as part of the job

    Air sealing 100yr old home

Contractor here and said img_3209-jpg.2446349 is the roof slants that go 8ft deep into the room below and roof eaves. Given there is no top plate there, he can't air seal there. He also said blown-in insulation would have been much better to air seal but I was the one who wanted rock wool

    Air sealing 100yr old home

Maybe too much to ask but if you have a quick phone or web tool to show where I should air seal on that picture, that'll greatly help!

    Air sealing 100yr old home

As soon I as entered the attic and closed the hatch behind me, I could see my arctic Hayes smoke pen blow smoke vertically. I was about 3ft above the attic floor which shows a lot of leakage and none of my exhaust fans were running. The smoke was blowing higher after turning on 4 fans

    Air sealing 100yr old home

It is platform framing. And yes, I have extensive crown molding. So it seems like the whole exterior and interior plate walls needs to have a ceiling done. Do I have to lift up the insulation on every cavity inside the attic as well and check for openings or simply focus on the exterior walls...

    Air sealing 100yr old home

Contractor is coming back tomorrow but want to validate a few things and keep him honest. I did go through a lot of videos and articles online but not fully clear yet. I bought a smoke gun but it helped marginally since there is so much leak everywhere. However, I do see the smoke go higher...

    Air sealing 100yr old home

Folks - we live in a 100yr old 2-level stucco home with basement in the northeast. Interior walls are stucco with lathe material inside and no insulation. We replaced the old fiberglass & blown-in insulation with R49 rock wool in the attic and also did rim joists with closed cell spray foam...

    1. What should I replace the dryer vent you see with? 2. Furnace is a Bosch 40k 3. What would I have to do to have a closed system to provide combustion air intake for the rheem Performance 50 Gal. Short 6 Year 40,000 BTU Natural Gas Tank Water Heater. I looked up the manual here and can’t find...

    Attic insulation

I’m in NYC. How can someone seal up and insulate the rim joists area in the area and is it a good idea given these pipes could need some maintenance in the future?

    Attic insulation

2-level house & basement in HVAC climate zone 4 and taking out all of the old attic pink batts insulation since it's worn out. Once old insulation is out, they will do air sealing before re-insulating. Contractor is through a state funded program and they only allow fiberglass or cellulose on...

    Chimney fix-up

Tuck pointing may not be an option as the chimney isn't in a great shape on the inside and the chimney company said that it will likely be worse on the outside and if he steps out the stucco, the condition could be bad enough that pointing isn't an option and he will have to rebuild and put in...

    Chimney fix-up

After chipping off the loose stucco, can we apply the metal mash on top of the current paint or is it necessary to take everything out down to the brick?

    Chimney fix-up

I did think about removing the chimney but will that affect our sale value and if it's marginal like <30k, it doesn't matter. However, the chimney spans basement to 2nd floor and attic so once chimney is taken out, they will have to build the exterior wall and not sure if that's a 50k expense or...
