    Chimney fix-up

One more - the contractor said no need to remove the tar on the chimney and he'll simply apply the mesh, stucco base and paint all over? Isn't that bad practice?

    Chimney fix-up

Step flashing could be a good idea. I know the water is not entering where the bedroom leak is and we can actually see it when we go to the attic, but it’s very hard to determine if it is coming from the roof or right behind the chimney. One option could be rebuilding 10 foot of the chimney but...

    Chimney fix-up

Yes metal liner was added last year. What are your thoughts on installing the metal mesh? Also here's another picture showing the circle which is where water leaks into the bedroom wall

    Chimney fix-up

Guys - Need help to figure out my never ending issues with our 100 year old home in NY. The home has stucco intact but we have paint chipping off the brick chimney. We closed off the fireplace but the 50 Gal Rheem hot water heater and HVAC furnace still use the chimney. New roof 5 yrs ago but...

Insulating a 100 yr old home

Definitely putting 2 sump pumps because we've had water come in the past but it no longer does after doing the external waterproofing but to be safe, we'll identify 2 lowest spots of the basement to install a sump pump. However, without a vapor barrier doesn't humidity naturally enter through...

Insulating a 100 yr old home

Got it. So did you put rock wool on all the basement walls? My basement is 80% below ground and my main goal is humidity but a lot of humidity is also coming from the floor which doesn’t have a vapor barrier. It has tiles but no barrier below tiles

Insulating a 100 yr old home

NYC is HVAC climate zone 4. 100 yr old stucco home. Walls are lathe & plaster with 0 insulation. Attic has some old worn-out pink batts and rim joists in basement have nothing I'm utilizing a govt. energy program so limited with choices. I've read many threads and do understand some perils if...

    Shower knob issues

Hey guys - just to conclude on this thread, I had to call a professional plumber on this one. I didn't have all the tools and I suspected the diverter valve was faulty. We replaced it with a Delta shower assembly and all good now. Also capped off all the piping to the Jacuzzi since it wasn't...

    Shower knob issues

Got the knob out but can’t take out the rod/assembly. My friend told me it’ll have to be cut as well. If we do that, do you think I will get something similar with an on/off diverted knob on top and heat control at the bottom to replace it? Do you folks have any links where you’ve seen similar...

    Shower knob issues

So if this doesn't work, then is Plan B using angle grinder to cut off the knob?

    Shower knob issues

This is the back of the top knob, which controls the direction of the output valve. If we can just change the knob and not touch/damage anything else that would be ideal since that'll be a bigger job

    Shower knob issues

I took the one screw out but can’t pry the shower knob out. 3 in 1 oil isn’t helping and I placed 2 screw drivers on either side to pull out but it didn't work. It’s turning fine but won’t come out. Do I need to remove the back plate first? I haven’t applied maximum force yet to avoid breaking...

    Shower knob issues

I like your advice. Next, I'll remove everything and post some pictures again. Would Home Depot do or they are unlikely to carry a good variety of parts that would fit?

    Shower knob issues

Top one is on/off control only - move counter-clockwise to turn on and counter to turn off while the bottom is temperature. I checked the sides of the knob to see if I can find a brand name, but there is none. The last owner installed this Chinese manufacturer Jacuzzi, which has gone out of business

    Shower knob issues

All of a sudden, after turning on the top knob, it turned on the shower for five seconds and then abruptly turned off. The bottom knob is temperature control. Any ideas not troubleshoot this? Is it simply threading gotten loose and needs to be redone? Thanks.

Here is an image but most of it has been fixed up with stucco patch. But now we want to use just white stucco to make it all look better -

    Stucco paint job

mostly just old age in our 100 year old home. The bricks are obviously 100 years old too so not in the best shape but not terrible either. We can't take out all the stucco and fix the brick joints as the job will be cost-prohibitive and we may only be in this house another 10 years. There were...

    Stucco paint job

Can anybody who simply used white stucco and left it as is without painting recommend or tell me which brand of white stucco did you use and how have the results been for you. We plan to do this first on our brick chimney completely (fixing cracks and then applying new stucco on top of current...
