The tailstock chuck recommended I that works like a drill chuck but has brass jaws. This could be used in the same way, but so could any drill chuck. I wonder if the scroll mechanism is more accurate for centering, in which case I could see the benefit in using it in that kind of set up.

I don't think so. It's exactly like a drill chuck, but the jaws are on a scroll. The arbour seems to be a taper fit in the chuck body.

Maybe this is why its unusual. Maybe it didn't solve any problem. I imagine it's more expe dive to make than a normal drill chuck, possibly doesn't work great as a drill chuck, and won't hold any work that a drill chuck wouldn't. Could be a solution to a problem that didn't exist and therefore...

Ill have a read, thanks. I mean drill bits, rather than drilling machine. I assume it's always been intended for a lathe tailstock. Seems a little clunky in use for a pillar drill. Probably slower to use with no real advantage, and must be more expensive to make, so the idea wasn't dominant.

Shame about the plating, but I'm sure the box will look amazing when done anyway. I had to post this though, you say you have never seen a home plating kit work correctly. I did all the 're plating work on a 1950s motorcycle about 2 years ago with good results. Done at home in my kitchen sink!

Bought this recently as I hadn't seen a drill chuck with a scroll before. Is it unusual, or have i just not come across them? I have a small vintage lathe with a Cushman 3 jaw so this will go nicely in the mt1 tail stock.

I bought a beryllium copper ball pein hammer a few weeks ago so when I saw these sockets at the local autojumble, I bought them. No real need for them, but never mind. Berylco, 7/16, 5/8, 19/32, 1/2" drive.

Bit beyond just cleaning. Original finish is already badly damaged. If they were mine I'd probably use some 0000 wire wool and some light oil.

Would make sense, they were with some plomb 9/32 bits in the same finish. They all came with some mixed king **** 9/32 and 1/4 that has the UK military crows foot stamp.

Don't normally buy old snap on stuff bit got these in a box of bits. A m5 (midget?) 9/32 Tommy bar and a M 1 C (or badly stamped 0) 3/8 female to 9/32 male adapter. Are these 1959s? Appear to have a worn zinc finish maybe.

Don't really come across plomb stuff in the UK, and I don't tend to buy it if I do. But these were in a box of bits I bought today. A wf7 and wf5b. They seem to be a zinc finish? They are both 9/32. Any idea on age of these?

Found a reference to improved in a 1913 handy advert And seems on the ball base vice they went to square nose in the 1930s!
