How to insulate to R49 attic truss?

Maybe use 2x4s instead of 2x12s and just space them down further. There would be an ~8" air gap between the 2x4s, but it would be "closed off" helping with wind washing in that 1.5" gap. You could stuff them with scrap to help. Or you could **** the 2x4s together and just spray closed cell...

How to insulate to R49 attic truss?

Sorry to hijack, but I'm in just about the same boat. Slightly larger (28ft wide). The knee wall and the ceiling I should be able to insulate just fine with 24" batts. I don't need R49 which helps. I'm in Northern NY and will probably go with just R19. I don't plan on insulating the sloped...

Radiant heated floor plumbing below slab

Thanks. That would have been a good idea, but that drawing is not exact. The area between the basement concrete wall and the first joist is only about four inches or so (but at the top of the concrete wall). Updated drawing below. And there is spray foam insulation all in that cavity. The...

Radiant heated floor plumbing below slab

Sorry, cryo-tek was the glycol I was going to use. Using 02 Barrier Pex-A. Thanks.

Radiant heated floor plumbing below slab

Crawl space is conditioned. HVAC heats/cools it like the rest of the house. Thanks. That photo looks like about what I'm doing. Thanks. Was going to use cryo-tek. I doub't I'll need to use glycol, but if something goes bad and a storm causes issues for days in sub-freezing temps while I'm...

Radiant heated floor plumbing below slab

Fair enough on the service. My HVAC system is in there already. As is current domestic water heater. Closed system. Heat only. Although I'm still considering a boiler that pulls double duty and does DHW either for the whole house, including garage apartment, or just the garage apartment...

Radiant heated floor plumbing below slab

Hi all. Thanks for previous help. I am getting ready to lay my loops and was planning to put my loops' start/end in a crawl space below the slab level. I'm wondering if this is okay. Seems like it would be hard to fill to some extent (was planning on glycol since I'm not here in northern NY...

Radiant floor heating loops. More shorter loops? 9" vs 12"?

Thanks for the additional replies. I didn't see notifications, so I didn't know people were still replying, and I was busy and hadn't had time to come on and browse :) In loopCAD, it says the garage floor heating is "11.0 Btu(hr ft2)" at 75.6F (I said room temp of 70) using "manual J8." That...

Radiant floor heating loops. More shorter loops? 9" vs 12"?

Thanks. I think I'll run the patio pipes "just in case" but focus on the garage. That's sort of been how it's going anyway. The patio is more of a "just because I can" type of thing. And it sounds impressive. And it should add some value for the slight cost of putting in the pipe.

Radiant floor heating loops. More shorter loops? 9" vs 12"?

That's sort of what I assumed. Thanks. The heat load talks make my head hurt. I need to find a "Hydronics for dummies" book so I don't feel like I need an engineering degree to understand it all. There is sooooo much information, it starts to jumble together in my puny mind. I thought this...

Radiant floor heating loops. More shorter loops? 9" vs 12"?

Thanks for the replies. LOL. Might be the best advice I could get. Thanks :) Just in the fall and spring. I'm on the water and like to hang out on the patio, but it can be chilly during those shoulder seasons. Thinking that a heated slab under me would be nice. If not, then snow melt it...

Radiant floor heating loops. More shorter loops? 9" vs 12"?

Noob here. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I progress. I've been sifting through threads on this forum for a week+, and am now pretty thoroughly confused, but that's on a bunch of stuff, like boilers and such. For now, my initial question is on loops since I need slabs poured soon. I am...
