    Vinyl porch columns falling over

You guessed it. They had a bracket that came with it but for some reasonnnn... they weren't used. My brother's brother-in-law works at a machine shop who is willing to take a crack at it. I'm very greatful and as soon as I get some measurements I'll email him the specs and hope it works out.

    Vinyl porch columns falling over

You've got the visual. The only problem with that is the columns are round steel pipe with foam filling in the gap between the vinyl and the pipe. There's nothing to securely attach it too. I was going to have a plate fabricated that I would be able to twist a 1/4 turn to "lock" the column into...

    Vinyl porch columns falling over

A few years ago I had my front porch redone in all vinyl. The guy who did it for me didn't secure the top or bottom and relied only on using the railing to keep it upright. I have a good idea on how to secure them myself but I need someone to fabricate the brackets. The machine shops around here...

    Seal Coating a driveway

I read most of the first page of thread because I was approched with an offer to seal the driveway by a guy who pulled up in his truck and wanted to seal my driveway with "Gilsonite". I have read that that is NOT what you want to use. Also his price was WAY high for the size of my driveway. It's...

    Exterior Door Replacement Q...

The replacement door I've got is the same size. I would have had to special order the shorter size. The guy who was going to replace the door and do some other vinyl work went with me when I got it so I figured it would work. He was talking about raising the door, but was having some...

    Exterior Door Replacement Q...

If I raised the door, would I have to cut into the header, siding and run new channels around the door?

    Exterior Door Replacement Q...

I've got a bit of a predicament with my exterior rear door on my house. About 10 years ago, I built an attached deck and didn't remember to lower the deck so it wouldn't be flush to the door (which it is). The door is black and the plastic around the window in the door which has made it leak...

    Need some silica desiccant packs

She'll be able to get you bunches. As I was filling scripts (I'm a tech also) I would toss them into a sandwich baggie. By the end of the day, I had close to 100. I was using them to dry out wet electronics.

    Need some silica desiccant packs

Ask the pharmacy you use to keep them for you if you are on good terms with them. We toss hundreds of them every day. They should give them to you.

Condensation in knee wall on gable end

Sorry guys. I've had so many things going on with the hollidays, I completey forgot about this thread. I didn't take any pictures but the area above the garage is finished off with HVAC, insulation and drywall. The area that has the condensation is the vertical gable end unfinished knee wall...

Condensation in knee wall on gable end

Yeah, I'm regretting not having my roofer put in a ridge line vent. I've got gable vents on each end but aparently it's not going to be enough. Any products that will help?

Condensation in knee wall on gable end

With all the tempature swings and rain we have had, my gable end in the knee wall is sweating pretty bad. I'm worried about moisture damage. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

    Building inspection bungle

They told me 2 different things. One inspector told me 1 thing and another told me something completely different. It's all in how they define & interpret the different codes individually. One of the many should have explained it in a little more detail. It's not like I just got the sheetrock...

    Building inspection bungle

I see your point. BUT, I wasn't trying to be creative and "trick" the inspectors into thinking I was going to use the space above the garage for anything else than what I was going to use it for. If I was, I would have finished off the downstairs, had all the inspections, THEN finished the room...

    Building inspection bungle

It does specify and it says "finished storage". Too bad the inspectors can't tell the difference between storage and occupiable. They are the ones saying it's "occupiable" even though there's no where on the permit or anywhere else that says we are going to be living/occupying that space above...

    Building inspection bungle

I went to Lowes and they have a steel exterior door for about $170. I would have to take down the old door, install the new one, caulk and paint. I will have to check with an inspector to make sure it's ok to use since it doesn't actually say "fire rated" on the door. It's a catch 22. If I...

    Building inspection bungle

My issue is the inconsistency with the inspectors and the permits office. EVERY inspector (other than this last one) has seen and known it was additional space we could use as storage or watch tv in etc. NOT live in. They made it perfectly clear that by no means could anyone live in that room...

    Building inspection bungle

I had my final inspection today. There were several issues. The grade was too high on the outside. Not sure how they could tell that since it's too close to tell by just looking at it. The biggest thing is they said I needed a fire rated door where you can go to the "finished storage" space...
