No markings or id tags I can find. Any idea what it is?

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Appreciate the thoughts on the moss. Surprisingly that roof still doesn’t leak but I think I’m just going to replace it in the spring. Probably add some vents then. I was going to use these attic baffles to keep the insulation away from the roof being able to vent by the soffit.

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Would it not make R-13 become R-10? That along with the R-6 foam board already there would make R-16. Seems plenty adequate to me.

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Ok good to know about Rockwool not compressing. Will R-13 fiberglass compress into a 2.5” cavity adequately without popping off drywall? My current plan is just to not sore any weight in the loft area. Our homes were built in the 50’s in our neighborhood and at my dad’s place which is right...

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Looking for advice regarding Rockwool vs fiberglass. Per the recommendation from @kngelv I plan to use R-23 Rockwool for the ceiling. My 2x4 walls have R-6 one inch polyiso foam board, so I have effectively 2.5” to work with. Originally I had planned to compress R-13 fiberglass batts which...

MaxJax M6K lift anchors…regular or epoxy?

It’s done! I ended up putting in 2” PVC. It’s kind of iffy getting the hydraulic hose through with the quick connect on the end so I’ll likely remove it, then fish it through and add it back on the other end. Very happy with how this turned out. The guys did a great job, one had 40 years of...

MaxJax M6K lift anchors…regular or epoxy?

That’s interesting…I was originally going to use a single piece of water pipe I had laying around and bend it that way. Maybe I’ll go back to that. So no concern with introducing more opportunities for cracks?

MaxJax M6K lift anchors…regular or epoxy?

Just wanted to update you guys on my lift install. After drilling through the concrete I was pretty sure I had about 3” so I found a concrete company to come out and reinforce it. They’ve got it ready for some more rebar then pour 4,000 PSI concrete tomorrow with fiber reinforcement. It’s 3x12’...

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Great thoughts. I agree. I went out there today and was looking at it and I don’t think I want to tear out those rafters ties. Got a quote to spray foam the 12x30 section and it was $2,750 which I don’t want to spend. I like the sounds of that Rockwool. If I put that across the whole ceiling...

Looks very nice! What is the ceiling height in there?

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

I’m in Southwest MI so I have Menards. I do like the look of that metal. And like the idea of easier to remove. Only negative I can see is more $ and loss of fire protection.

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

I see…I’d be open to that. Mainly planned drywall for cost savings

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Good ideas. I could do that if I end up raising the joists. Otherwise I’m going to have to keep insulation between joists to keep min ceiling height

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

That 1” foil faced polyiso is what I have in the wall cavities. I am planning a ceiling, was planning drywall. What is R panel lining?

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Ok, that makes sense! Good point about them not being supported, didn’t think about that. I probably wouldn’t want to use it for storage anyway because there won’t be much headroom up there. Wouldn’t mind getting new lumber as the old ties are pretty bowed, but that is nice that there’s a...

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

I am really starting to like this idea of raising the ceiling. Those undersized ceiling joists always bothered me the way they bowed. With as long as the building has been there I’m sure if I stop storing stuff up there it would hold up, but just not going to look great. If I were just to do...

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

Thanks! Yes I hear you on the air sealing issue. That’s part of why I spray foamed in rigid foam board in the wall cavity’s. Those are super tight now which is awesome. Maybe I could do something similar to the ceiling.

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

That makes sense! That seems like a great option to get more R value with the limited space I’ve got.

Insulating 2x6 ceiling joists in garage ceiling…Can I get away with insulating with R21?

That makes sense…If I did raise the ceiling that way it would basically render the attic area unusable as a loft anymore. But having the higher ceiling would be a real plus. My biggest concern with doing something like this is messing with an old brittle building and losing strength or causing...
