Improving drill press use, no more off-center holes

Thanks everyone. I've ordered a new vise, and am going to look into table flex to see how much it's deflecting, and then see about propping it up. I'm also going to look into getting a mill.

Improving drill press use, no more off-center holes

I have a floor drill press which I believe is of reasonable quality (Ridgid R1500). I also have a cheap 3" 'drill vise' from a local tool store, and a thick piece of scrap aluminum that I use as a base when things don't fit well in the vise. I've had lots of issues with drilling large diameter...

What's on your walls? Neat storage ideas!

I used a 1x3" rectangle tube and cut it to form a hook shape: https://i.imgur.com/0QOvIKA.jpg

What's on your walls? Neat storage ideas!

I was originally going to weld a bung to the bottom, but I decided instead that I can just pump it out. I think it will take more than a year or even two years to fill up to the holes on the front.

What's on your walls? Neat storage ideas!

I made this contraption to drain my large pan. It is a 3x3 aluminum tube with welded ends, a slot cut in the top, and two rods in it. The two rods keep it from sitting in what runs off of the pan. The top is held against the wall with a rare earth magnet. Works like a charm.

Gas flow problem with Miller 211

Got the call yesterday. The board had a stuck relay, so they replaced the board. The welder is a little over 3 months out of warranty, but they fixed it for free. I just need to pay a small transportation fee of about $40. Picking it up next week. Can't wait. Thanks for all the input.

Gas flow problem with Miller 211

Thanks, but why is it flowing out the gun as soon as I power the welder on?

Gas flow problem with Miller 211

My Miller 211 isn't flowing gas properly. As soon as I power up the welder (no trigger), I can hear gas flowing out the nozzle, but very slowly, nowhere near what it should be when the trigger is squeezed. Squeezing the trigger has no effect, it just flows that little bit still. I took the side...

What's on your walls? Neat storage ideas!

I took his idea (thanks) and I did the bending with my bare hands by leaving lots of extra length to use for leverage. The 1/4" round bar bent without much resistance around a 3" diameter tube. I didn't need any heat or anything. I'd post a pic but they look the same, just different dimensions.

    The repurposing thread

From the department of excess: Funnel storage in a metal drum. Start with a metal drum that used to be full of bulk chain: Take a piece of sheet metal full of holes and weld little feet to it: Seal the bottom of the drum with RTV, and drop in the metal base from earlier: Toss funnels...

    workbench top

After having an oil-impregnated wood top catch fire, I can say that I will never recommend wood as a workbench top, unless you are only ever going to do wood work, or other things that don't involve oil and heat. My workbench top is 2x8s beside each other with 316 stainless 20ga on top. I...

    MIG welding aluminum, melting tips

I apologize for the thread necro, but I want to follow up, and all the context is here. I cleaned off the oxidation layer on the workpieces, bought 4043 wire to replace the 5356 I was using before, and I followed the chart on the door of the welder, and lo and behold: a few decent beads! It's...

    Powered welding cart

I got to thinking the other day that I'd like to have multiple angle grinders on my welding cart, so I don't need to change the discs so often, but then I realized I'd have to have a second extension cord (along with the one for the welder itself that I drag along already). Is it really such a...

My Take on The Ultimate Welding Table

It doesn't matter for this table, but one thing I'd like to point out is that with the design where the top frame portion is welded to the side of the legs, there is a large shear stress on those welds. You have enough welding area that it will hold (easily), and the legs will still be taking...

Cleaning oil off of new metal

I bought a spray bottle for $4 at Canadian Tire and put Varsol in it. It worked well, until a week later when I went to use it again and the sprayer didn't work. I think the Varsol ate the seal or something in the pump. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to buy a plunger can.
