One amp per .001" stock thickness for steel as a starting point is what I've always heard (and used) - make adjustments based on geometry. My limited experience with aluminum required way more heat. But to call my welding 'amateur' would be generous, so feel free to ignore.

I've got one dated 12-46 and the acorn nuts are exactly like the picture you posted - brass with a steel cross pin. Same exact swage on the ends of the cross pin, too. Mine's in original paint with some of the original label intact, I've no doubt they are original to it. Hope that helps.

I have a couple of Valpro 5l cans bought from Amazon.de and they are excellent quality. I think Valpro and Wavian may be the same company? I'm not 100% on this, but believe they are real deal NATO cans. Mine are made in Latvia. Extremely rugged, and nice thick powder coat.
