I think the proper term is "split phase".

What are ACCEPTABLE air leaks for you?

Doctor_Bill caught the mistake in this -> 12 cycles = 4800 Watt-hours = 4.8kWh, not 0.5kWh as stated. So at 0.20 per kWh this compressor is almost $1 per running hour, and a hypothetical leak that requires the compressor running for a total of five minutes per hour will cost $2 per day, or $700...

    Transporting 60 gallon air compressor

Lets see: 60 gallons is about 0.227 cubic meters, wiki says air is about 1.225 kg per cubic meter, and 150psi is about 10 times atmospheric pressure. (and a kg is 2.2 lbs) So 0.227 * 1.225 * 2.2 * 10 = 6 lbs extra weight. So he was off by a factor of 20. Still, his concept was not without merit.

Which Wilton Mechanic's vise model number?

I have this EXACT vise, same 111066/111067 casting numbers, the original label is a little easier to read on mine, but it has no model number, only "Mechanics Vise". Mine had mismatched jaws someone had tried to butcher onto it. In the early 90's a call to McMaster-Carr describing it as a 5"...

    Adding a 220 plug

Couldn't you splice into the water heater circuit and also put a switch on the water heater? In my garage I only use the compressor occasionally, turning off my hot water heater wouldn't be a big inconvenience to me. And if you forget and both run at the same time, all you'll do is trip the...

    Adding another 220v line

8 ga wire is normally good for 40 amps - change the breaker to a 40a and you are good to go. Nice job using 8 instead of 12 when you originally installed the run!

Re-furb Rotary 2 post or buy new

Cool - so you have a full magnetic starter on it. Three components in the box: control transformer, thermal overloads, and a contactor. I don't know about Rotary, but on a Mohawk this option lists for $1300. Control transformer reduces incoming line voltage to something low (usually 24Vac)...

    Old floor jacks

I got that model Weaver really used in my early teens around 1973, and used it exclusively until 2000. One heck of a jack. The only downside I remember was it was hard to lug around in the back seat of a VW bug. The memories ...

    German-Hand-Tools

Another "Best Seller Ever" vote for Ash! Last week I placed my fourth order with Ash, and an hour later I get the tracking number. Box arrives in perfect shape, tools individually wrapped inside. Every order has been the same - perfect in every way - literally could not ask for more. Thank you...

Re-furb Rotary 2 post or buy new

Ouch - so you have two switches to worry about: the pushbutton operator and the overhead kill switch. Easiest solution would be use a contactor to energize the replacement 220v motor, and wire the pushbutton operator in series with the existing normally-closed overhead cutoff switch to close the...

Re-furb Rotary 2 post or buy new

At that price I certainly see your point. Is there a lower cost option for replacing the motor - usually these are NEMA "C" flange motors which are pretty widely available. You'd have to match the flange and rpm, but could replace the coupling half if the shaft dia were different. My advice...

Re-furb Rotary 2 post or buy new

Another option - can't you replace the three-phase motor with a single phase? I would think that was your least expensive option. No need to replace the pump and coupling.

    Mohawk Lift Install Tips?

I put my brand new System 1A in Dec 2011, a lot of fun - I'd highly recommend as a do-it-yourself. Tips? Lets see - my dealer warned me to be careful carrying the lift arms, it is easy to slip your fingers into the arm and then have the inner arm come crashing into them. I was glad to learn...

4 post lift to service wheels?

Hi David, I'm going to cast my vote for the two post lift. I've used both two and four post lifts, and chose a two post for my home garage two years ago. Yeah - a little pita to place the lift arms, but honestly not more than a couple of minutes. Big difference when you lift the car - the two...

    Reconditioned American Jacks

Passing along a word of caution about PHJ Jacks. I bought a rebuild kit from them and it was ok, and based on my experience my brother ordered a recon Lincoln/Walker 4 ton 93657. A few months later I went to see him and saw the jack. The jack he received was awful - looked nothing like the...
