    What recession? Flaky contractors...

In the last year I have fired: - my hvac guy, who was a friend. Never could: complete job, start another job. New guy is fantastic. I need him I get him. I never ask for prices. I just pay what is bills me. - fired my lazy ***, incompetent lawyer. I have not found a good replacement. - fired my...

    Holmes on Homes

When did that happen? My house was built in 1989 and I have a stairwell leading to my basement in my garage. I have seen others built in the last 10 years with them.

OK Contractors' justify your costs, or am I a sucker?

Well said Frank. I am surprised by some the of responses here. Not acceptable in my book.

OK Contractors' justify your costs, or am I a sucker?

It is a different type of intelligence. Some are school smart and some are spacial smart. My son and some of my best friends are spacial smart. My son is an apprentice heavy equipment mechanic. My other son is school smart. He is a biochemical engineer. He has trouble changing the oil on his...

    8/3UF inside?

I have come to the conclusion you really do not want to make a claim. My deductible on my house is now $5,000. I really doubt that an insurance company would decline a claim based on "not to code". It is just too hard to substantiate. "not to code" does not mean "imminent danger". Now, if it...

    8/3UF inside?

I disagree. Many houses do not meet code. The code has evolved over the years making many houses noncompliant. To not cover a claim because of "not to code" opens a legal hornets nest. Did the "not to code" cause the loss? Who did the "not to code"? Was the "not to code" "according to code"...

    Why we need building permits

The theory of inspections are good. The problem is inspections have turned into a money maker. At least here in Ontario. The people who really need to have their work inspected don't because of the adversarial inspection process. If they make a mistake and have to correct it they get a big...

It's not bx. Bx is metal sheathed. I agree its tinned copper

    Changing a 220v circuit to a 110v.

Maybe I have a silly solution but can't you not simply take one of the conductors out of the circuit at both the breaker and box then wire in a 110v receptacle to the remaing conductor, neutral and ground?

    Proper Grounding?

Lots of old wiring and techniques do not pass current code. I am not an electrician so I can't be absolute but my guess is that using the sheathing as a ground is not to current code. In your case though it is the better of evils to use it as a ground as opposed to not having a ground. Oh, and...

    Proper Grounding?

Not necessarily. At one time polarity did not matter but with the profusion of sensitive electronics in the last 40 years polarity does matter.

    Breaker keeps tripping

I understood what you are saying. You cannot have a 20amp product legally having a 15amp male end. That is dangerous. Having a 20 amp draw on a 15amp circuit will overheat the wires and trip the 15 amp breaker (hopefully).

    Breaker keeps tripping

Yes, that is what I was saying. A 20amp female will accept a 15amp male and a 20 amp male
  18. P

    Breaker keeps tripping

This is what a 20 amp male looks like It won't fit in a 15amp female
  19. P

    Breaker keeps tripping

I am surprised to hear that since a 20 amp female has a a different shaped (sideways T ) prong As you can see it will accept a 15 amp male.

    Breaker keeps tripping

I am guessing it is because anything you plug into a 15amp receptacle will be rated at 15 amp max. You cannot plug a 20amp male into a 15 amp female. The wiring and breaker will handle 20 amp so a 15 amp load is fine.
