    Lathe Project

Speaking of lathes, I have a chance to get an English built 'turret' lathe for a decent price, the big problem is floor space. I just love machines and this is a sweet one. They really are neat machines.

    Lathe Project

I like the space frame bench and room for the 2 tooling cabinets, I have a traditional support with the 2 end cabinets and might replace it with what you've done. Re: quickchange tool post, if you have one you'll never put the original one back on. I bought additional tool holders for mine.

Here a neat technique with cleco fasteners for sheet metal patching

I apologize for the camera, I'm too stupid to figure one out. Here's a small piece, I cheated and drilled the holes, sheared the piece and touched the holes up with a rat tail, I couldn't find a washer to back the cleco and used those 8-32 weld nuts. Then I join the panels with cleco and...

Here a neat technique with cleco fasteners for sheet metal patching

A neat trick with a cleco is you can put a little nick in each panel (equal to the size of the cleco) and the cleco will hold both panels in perfect alignment, even in a curve. The cleco will be right in the seam.

    The Best Light Fixture Ever!

Heat is an enemy, no question. I took heat readings with temp gun and there was a 40deg difference with or without the shade, I took the fixtures back apart and removed the shades. I had purchased 6 fixtures, installed 4 of them with the warehouse shades, when the fixtures started failing I...

    Belt or Disc Sander Recommendations?

I have the delta 6x48 and its a beast, the belts are very easy to swap and its easy to keep clean. The photo is when I got it, I fitted it with the green zirconia belts and it removes metal licketysplit. I used to do a lot of headers and used one of them little 4" wide belt sanders, it was...

    The Best Light Fixture Ever!

As a followup to my post, I bought 6 of those fixtures and 3 of them have burned out! I contacted the sellers and offered to send the failed ones back at my expense to see whats wrong with them, was it my fault? He didn't want to see them and offered to replace those 3, I offered to cover the...

Lets see your vintage shop work lights

The adapter is just a 16ga plate, there's one in the photo, the shade sets loosely on top. Since I made the post about the fixtures they have quit working, as of yesterday I've lost 3 of them, they have about 400hrs on them and the avg life span is supposed to be greater than 30,000. I'm in...

Lets see your vintage shop work lights

I posted this in the 'lighting' section but its appropriate here as well, I had to replace my Halogen lights and went with 500w LED, they were 12" in diameter and I had some of the old warehouse light housings around and I thought I'd make an adapter plate: I have to get some more housings and...

What is ISO and where do we find a similar reference chart for 'inch' scales, for those of us that work on really old cars.

Reamers: when to use, why to use and what type

So we need to have a drill bit sized to a reamer (like a tap & die set) to make a precision hole? How about the adjustable reamers, how to you set them to a precise cut and how is the proper way to do the taper?

    Machine Tapping

Thats about how I do it in the lathe, let the chuck loose in the tailstock and run it in without much pressure, let the chuck spin, when reverse unlock the tailstock and it backs right out.

    Machine Tapping

Do you use a 'tapping head' in the mill? I've seen them and suspect they work like a clutch, if thats what you use can you explain it? I do most of my tapping on a lathe, for hand work I have a hand operated tapping machine that is deadnuts straight, I'll sometimes use the mill to start a tap...

    Internal threading lathe tool...left-handed

Why don't you use a tap? If I need a piece of tubing threaded I put a jacobs chuck tool loose in the tailstock, tighten a tap in it and run it up into the drilled hole to be tapped. I'm careful with the feed, let the chuck spin like a tapping head clutch I recon, I've never broken a tap and...

Who has the most screwdrivers on Garage Journal?

I keep a special set of them old woodhandled screwdrivers, preferably 'Yankee' or 'Mac' because they used to be made to fit a screw. I do lots of old carburetors, the screws were very specific and the makers of professional screwdrivers fit them with precision. The last thing you want to do is...
