    energy efficient bulbs outside?

I have CFLs all over and the only bulbs that have an appreciable warm up are the ones I use outdoors. It doesn't matter the temp they take forever to warm up. I don't know what the difference is between those in another shaped case (such as the flood shaped outdoor bulbs and those made to look...

Foreclosure Home Shopping - Some people disgust me

Let's see, they sued because they couldn't get loans on homes so the guidelines were changed to allow 'credit challenged" people buy homes. Now they are suing because they were given loans when the lender should have known they couldn't afford a home! That's the people that are trashing the...

    Anybody ever use directbuy.com?

A friend, who did join, and I compared prices item by item of things needed to build our houses. I won hands down by shopping around and I didn't pay $5,000! Plus they steered him wrong on a number of items. It was so funny in that most of the stuff they lied about was easily checked by going...

Blown Insulation in Attic - Cellulose vs. Fiberglass?

Cellulose doesn't compact or settle nearly as much Fiberglass.

    Fibermesh Concrete

The fiber mesh doesn't keep it from cracking at all, it controls the cracking and usually will keep it to small hairline cracks instead of big old gaping cracks. it is more to keep it looking purtier than just plain old concrete. Once again, it is NOT a substitute for rebar

    Gemini Lifts

That is literally 10 minutes from my house. If you'd like I'll go over and eyeball them. I had been looking into Worth Equipment lifts also in FW.

    Fibermesh Concrete

I used fibermesh concrete in my house. As I understand it you still need rebar. The fibermesh is just supposed to help control all those little movements and cracks. I believe you use the rebar identically to a foundation w/o the mesh.

You've never said, but you did call the police didn't you? You filed against her insurance but did you call the police as well? That would have made any claims a no brainer.

Ideas for garage/shop and living quarters

As I've said on the other posts you will need some special financing or deep pockets to do this. That type of dwelling does not qualify for normal, low downpayment, low interest rate, long term regular home mortgage type financing. This means you will have to pay for the building out of pocket...

New guy--question on steel building house/shop

The shop/home combo creates a real problem with financing. You can't get normal FNMA/FHLMC type home financing you have to get commercial financing. That means higher interest rates, higher downpayments, and it makes it really tough to sell. I think they are cool, but I ended up with 2...

Have any of you done this? I need to ship a kit car chassis fron England to Texas that is about 9' long X 4' wide x 30' tall and weighs about 350 lbs. My first quote was $5,000 and a 2 month delivery time. YIKES! Although I haven't done it yet, a friend said to check air freight as it was...

What items in new construction make a house most efficient for the money?

I used the low flow toilets with a 4" trap size. Man that flushes well and it's basically the same price as regular toilets. I learned the hard way that low flow=flush so this time I went for the biggest trapways and passageways I could find. I heard about the pressure flushes, but I never...

What items in new construction make a house most efficient for the money?

I was able to sheath my house in 1" thick sheets of foam rather inexpensively. That was along with using OSB all the way around and wrapping it in plastic. With a little shopping for AC models you can drastically increase your efficiency ratings. I bought into the 16 SEER models and by...

    Land ISSUES - Lawyers advise

Fannie Mae doesn't warrant that there are no other claimants to the property such as a leasehold. Leaseholds survive a change in ownership and run with the property. Of course he could have violated the lease by not paying.

    Land ISSUES - Lawyers advise

I own a mortgage company and a real estate office and I agree with most of the above. it WAS a title company issue. It WAS a Realtor issue. It WAS a title policy issue. And yes all are liable for not making you aware of same. I also agree about getting rent paid to you. On the other hand -...

Homeowner pays for County Error (Maryland)

And this is the step that I have so many problems with. I end up being the one that has to correct the professionals every time. I've found that Professional doesn't mean they know more or take extra pains, it only means they work in the field. The last 3 homes I built had major problems with...
