maybe a cantilever or torsion system (similar to 280z hood) may work out as well. Those trunk hinges also look very similar to the style I had on my old Lumina Z34, pretty sure it had a torsion system as well.

When I have welded on propane tanks I fill them with water to push out any remaining gas. You can see it coming out, looks like a heat wave.
