Wonderful Story, and one I am glad has no end in near sight! A note on square head bolts on the lift that you left as original, if in any of your many other upcoming restoration projects you need new ones, the electric utility industry (i.e. power lines) still use all square head bolts on cross arms at the top of poles. Generally in 1/2", 5/8", and some 3/4". They still look exactly the same as the ones on your beautiful lift. Keep up the great work!

Well damn! picked up CarCraft today because of the article about Tom's garage & I discovered I was mentioned on page 51 :)

I'm hoping this doesn't end up with me finding my mailbox collapsed under the weight of tools to be oil quenched....luckily it is supported by a railroad tie..

JERAULD Y MANIFOLD
Well the story continues...
Thomas & his wife made it to San Diego. The guy that discovered the Jerauld Y manifold in a pile of old parts, finally met face to face with the guy that has been looking for it most of his life...
Jacob had a BBQ at his house Monday night. Thomas brought his buddy Lou Bingham ( a old Land Speed Racer) to the BBQ. We all had a great time bench racing , swapping lies & stories.
Lou Bingham had news about the Jerauld Belly Tank Car. Unfortunatlly it wasn't good news. the car was sold to Nolan White . The owner of a company here in San Diego called AUTOPOWER. They parted out the belly tank & used part of the Jerauld Belly tank to build another land speed car. The strange thing about that is my uncle Chuck Chenowth founded a company called San Diego Steel Products, that company became AUTOPOWER. So the belly tank car ended up with a company my family started....

Jacob & I are going to AUTOPOWER tomorrow morning to see what we can find out

Another strange thing happened today. Al Jeraulds son, Joel . Emailed me last night. He just join the HAMB site & saw what I had posted about the belly tank & sent me an email.
So we are going to meet with Joel Jerauld tomorrow after we visit with the folks at AUTOPOWER....

I will keep you all posted....

I would have posted photo of Jacob's BBQ but it just aint letting me load the photos ????

Long time lurker on this board but have taken the past two days to read this thread from #1 to #2529.

All I have to say it WOW! This story is rich with artifacts from history. The little stories along the way have made it even richer. It's just just about the items but how they connect to people through the years.

Can't wait to see what you blow the dust off next

Thank you Charles for posting that update on the manifold, the tanker and posting those pictures. Chris and I had a great time meeting everyone and getting to know a lot more about Al Jerauld. There were some wonderful stories told about Al and working with him some 50 years ago. I know that manifold, without question, is now with the one person in the whole world who is most deserving and best custodian of it.

Something else I came away with is how scarce the Al Jerauld Y manifold truly is. After all these years of looking, Jacob has found people who knew about it. Some had even seen one "back in the day" but he never found anyone who had one he could even look at. He's never uncovered another one anywhere. While we know that only 50 were made, he may now, very well posses the only one left in existence. Considering all that, what are the odds he wound up with it??????? :dunno:

count me no longer as a lurker, 3 days 126 pages !

Im curious - as the family of mr. Johnson has come back to see what youve done,
do they have appreciation for the amount of effort & restoration...to the memory of
their family member ??

Hi Don and good to see you are a lurker no more!

Some family members have been back and the reactions are varied. The one who was most affected seemed to be the wife of son, Don. He was the son who worked in the shop with Mr Johnson in the '50's to mid '70's as the mechanic. She and Don had lived next door to the family home and raised their family there. She kept saying as she toured the shop, Don would have been asking himself, "is this really the shop I use to work in?" She told me a story how one day he came home from work and said he'd cleaned the shop up enough to drive a car from one end, clear through to the other end. He was really proud of that accomplishment. Then when she went into the lift room and looked up at the restored "Johnson Welding and Repair" sign she teared up, saying "I thought this would all be lost." That was a pretty powerful moment for me and made the effort out there worthwhile.

Well damn Rick you do good work! The biggest problem with your 15 minutes of fame and glory is you'll have to hire a publicist, a personal assistant, security, lock your garbage cans, muscle cramps from autographs, jet lag from flying both coasts doing TV shows, etc. What a drag huh? But what price fame?! :bounce:

Nice going and thanks again my friend for all your helpful contributions here.

JERAULD Y MANIFOLD
Today Jacob & I went on another adventure, on our quest to find the Jerauld
Belly tank car.

First we went to AUTOPOWER & talked to Rick White. He confirmed his father Nolan
White got the Jerauld belly tank back in the day. They used it to build the
SPIRIT OF AUTOPOWER streamliner & set a bunch of Bonneville records with the car
But they don't have that car any more , he gave us a few name of folks that
might have it now , so that part of our adventure continues.

SPIRIT OF AUTOPOWER / Jerauld Belly Tank
313.53 mph on gas / 319.71 mph on Alky

Then we went to visit with Al Jerauld's son Joel. He had lots of old photos of
the Jerauld Speed shop & the Jerauld belly tank car. He also had original SCTA
timing tags the car received at Bonneville back in the 1950's & a Southern
California Roadster Club dash tag with Al Jeraulds name on it... Joel let us
borrow all the photos to have copies made.
Jacob & Joel spent about an hour telling stories about the old days at Jerauld
speed shop & I wasn't surprised how many stories involved M-80's tossed in to
the grease pit or into a open bathroom window.

The third part of the adventure today took us to a trophy / print shop to get copies
of the photos Joel Jerauld let us borrow. As we waited we looked at one of their
sales pamphlets they had on the counter. To our surprise , there was a photo of
the Jerauld Y Manifold in the sales pamphlet...
Jacob has been doing business with this trophy / print shop for MANY years &
they are the folks that mounted the Jerauld Y Manifold on the marble base. They
thought it was so cool looking that the took photos & used it in the sale
pamphlet. Jacob didn't seam to mind because they have given Jacob such good deal
on trophies for the High School for so many years. BUT being the fun loving
guys we are, we didn't pass up the opportunity to rake them over the coals for
not getting permission to use the Y Manifold in their sale pamphlet. They gave
Jacob a good deal on the copies of the photos... So all was cool

We also spent all day looking for copies of the new CAR CRAFT magazine. We had
to hit 6 stores to get 2 copies. All the stores had lots of copies of HOT ROD
... but Car Craft was sold out in most of the stores.

Thomas ... Jacob & I were surprised you didn't mention Monday at dinner that
the Magazine was doing an article on your shop. Seeing that Jacob doesn't have a
computer, It was his first chance to see your shop. Needless to say Jacob was
impressed...

i'm trying to find an appropriate table-top juke box that uses cds, but am not satisfied with what i've seen so far.
Chris

Finally, I am able to contribute productively to this thread rather than reply with acute observations. First and foremost, I'm :D with envy. This thread struck a chord, and I knew I might be able to help.

Chris, I may have a possible solution for you. You see, although I am in my early 40's, I have a soul of someone much older. (at times  ) I appreciate retro/vintage items and some years ago was looking for a solution much like you are now. Like you, I wanted to hold on to my stereo equipment, but really dug the vibe of old jukeboxes. At the time I had found a solution which utilized a table top jukebox like this:

I had the information of the company from way back then stashed in a box here in my office. Of course, that box has moved a few times over years, but I knew that I had printed out the information in the hopes that one day I would be able to use it. Well, I finally got around to digging out that box and finding the information. Wouldn't you know it, but the company is still around (a decade later :D). Here is their information:

Data Sync Engineering
P.O. Box 539
Footbridge Lane, Bldg 2
Blairstown, NJ 07825
(908)362-6299
www.datasynceng.com

Be sure to check out this link http://www.cdadapter.com/ from their home page. I hope you find this information useful.

don't be stuck on cd's. An old style one could fairly easily be converted to an input device for a computer to play mp3's and the like. It would probably require some custom programing, but it should be fairly simple.

DEnd, you are so right. It is very easy and somebody else has already figured out the "how". :bounce:

i'm a little "old school" so mr johnson's shop as you may recall has a 400 disc cd changer
Thomas

i could adapt an ipod to the shop very readily but then what would i do with all those cd's??
Thomas

Keep playing those CD's!!

Thomas and Chris -

When you first posted I read what I thought was the whole story. About a week ago I went back and went through the entire thread from about 20 on.This got me off my lurker status and I wanted to comment. Your attention to detail has really been an inspiration. Thanks for sharing your projects.

Welcome JK to the growing circle of family and friends here. As you've read, it is a pretty special group of folks here, of which you are now a part. This thread is not done so please check in on occasion to see what is going on here as you never know what will show up. :)

Thank you for the good wishes, it is much appreciated. Chris and I are finishing our west coast tour and I have some more posts (tools Joe!) waiting in the wings to get on here. Stand by.

Rick

Rick I can understand that. A somewhat similar situation, I informed a friend who had never seen the shop about this thread back when it had about 30 or so pages. He had never seen the a forum format before so he just saw the first page and thought that was the extent of it. When I asked his reaction about a couple different items and found he didn't remember seeing those, I asked if he had read it all. "Oh yes" he assured me, "I read the whole page." :) I now make sure when talking to folks that may not be too computer savvy to make sure they know what they're in for and how to get beyond page 1.

Thank you for the nice comment and looking us back up and persevering through to this point. You still haven't read the whole story. :D

Saw the article in Car Craft. And said damn that looks familiar, Like last months also I belive.I am glad I got on board here. Can't wait till we get better weather in Detroit so I can drag all the stuff out and put it back in the right way.
As for Virgil watching over your garage, I think Virgil and I were related with the "organizationally challenged" gene.
Good article, Great thread.

I forgot to take the camera.. :(

Nooooooooooo........ :yikes:

Not to worry guys, I had mine. I can't upload them while I'm on the road so I'll get a couple posted if you want once we're back home....shortly.

I appreciate the effort you made Rick, coming out to the track to meet Chris and myself. You realize after oil treating the Ford adjustable wrench you have become part of the story and history of the shop. Also your many contributions to this thread have enriched it for all of us. Thank you sir.

OK, we don't often stray too far from the subject of the old restored shop, the items there in or the property in general but.....here are a few pictures involving race cars and, by request, my driving "experience" last week at Willow Springs Raceway. Some of the following cars seen below were in the barn last year so there is that connection. Hows that for a stretch? :D

IMG_4322.jpg

In the shop I needed to have the car, a Formula Ford, fitted to me. This involves getting the seating area adjusted to my liking, moving pedals forward or backward, adjusting their travel, setting up the seat belts and arm restraints so they don't interfere, slowing or speeding up the steering ratio, etc.

IMG_4328.jpg

I just knew I shouldn't have eaten pizza for lunch.

IMG_4356.jpg

Ya know with just a little powder coating here and there and this car would really be stellar.

IMG_4384.jpg

At Willow Springs we had a team of 4 cars, all Formula Fords for this event. A couple you should recognize.

IMG_4373.jpg

Out for some practice sessions.

IMG_4376.jpg

IMG_4391.jpg

After I came back in I was given some highly sought after and valuable driving advice....

IMG_4390-1.jpg

"First you draw a grid and then I go first and put an X here and then it's your turn to put an O somewhere...."

IMG_4398.jpg

I just don't see how that will help my driving ???...:headscrat

IMG_4397.jpg

Car Craft Tech Editor, Jeff Smith, author of the May issue "This Guy's Garage" article about the shop came out to see my driving premiere and give me some more driving advice...."It's just like drag racing, steer with your left hand and shift with your right. It's easy, even a pilot could do it!"

IMG_4400.jpg

I think the secret to my success was the Garage Journal tee shirt I was wearing!

IMG_4389.jpg

Some assembly required, batteries not included...

IMG_4385.jpg

I don't care what you say, I don't think the steering wheel belongs out there...

IMG_4383.jpg

After more practice, crew chief and car owner, Roland Johnson called me in for a little more consultation,"....... don't lift in the turns and one last thing, ALWAYS keep the pointy end forward!"

IMG_4416.jpg

...pointy end forward, OK, got it....

IMG_4420.jpg

...pointy end forward, pointy end forward, pointy end forward, pointy end.....
