I think it is discontinued:confused: I think it is replaced by the tiawan one on the other thread.

Correct and hence why they are on eBay.

Still under Proto's lifetime warranty, though.

Thanks for posting this!

I just grabbed 2 of these (as S&H for the second one was 1 cent) & I'll have them delivered to my buddy in MI (since delivery to Canada is often prohibitively expensive). When he comes to visit next time, I'll sell the 2nd ratchet locally for ~$25, thereby getting mine for essentially free!

I don't really need this ratchet either, but, well, you know...

By the way, there is only one remaining, so act fast if you want it!

I would pick one up, but I don't like ratchets with more than 10* ratchet. This one has 15*.

I agree with the angle of sweep. I'd like to get the least amount of angle required for a 3/8 (and 1/4) inch ratchet. Does Proto have a comparable ratchet with the nice feel but say 5 deg sweep?

Hmmm... I just took a closer look (after I bought 2 of these things) and I actually believe these ratchets have a 6.8* arc swing.

I think the Seller was a bit lazy and copied the text from the Proto site for the J5249 ratchet which has a 24-tooth design, or a 15* sweep.

However, if you look closely at the picture provided in the auction, you will notice that the model being sold is actually the 5249P! An older catalogue shows this model to have been a 45-tooth "floating pawl" design, which, for some reason, translates to a 6.8* sweep (rather than the expected 8*)!

Excellent...

The Proto Big Dawg Ratchet design features a floating pawl. Contact is made
with nine-pawl teeth engaging with nine gear teeth, dispersing the
torque over a greater distance. The thumb operated directional switching
mechanism shifts the pawl within it's cavity making it easier to go from
the loosening function to the tightening function. The 6.8º arc swing and
slim pear-head design enables use in tight spaces.

3/8" DRIVE BIG DAWG
STANDARD LENGTH PEAR HEAD RATCHET
• 45 tooth gear/floating pawl design for small 6.8°arc swing.
• 13% smaller head for access in tight work areas.
• Reversing lever designed for quick, one hand operation.

In either case, this ratchet is powerful. The grip on fasteners is amazing. It's so solid it sometimes feels like I'm using a breaker bar instead.

I liked the regular 3/8" BD so much I bought:

3/8" long plastic handle
3/8" regular plastic handle
1/2" long plastic handle
1/4" plastic handle

Nice! Thanks for clearing that up Ibgradwell! I just e-mailed a few sellers on ebay to see if they'll ship to Canada. Fingers crossed.

Thanks

No sweat, Tim.

You'll find many (most, actually) US-based Sellers will ship to Canada... It's just that S&H can be expensive (Canada Post's fault, not USPS) and then you'll have to deal with Customs and duties for purchases over $15 (or maybe $25 - can't recall). That means the wrenches that cost you $16 can end up costing $40 by the time you get them in your door!

If you buy something used for under the $15 amount, make sure you have the Seller write the amount of the Winning Bid (not incl. S&H) as the Declared Value and describe the item; you'll be harrassed less.

And never, ever bid on an item where UPS is the only delivery option. They are infamous "duty" extortionists and I'd LOVE to see them go out of business!

Ya I've had the same experiences LB, I find USPS airmail on smaller items not too bad though. You shoulda got 3 on your order to your buddy and then just sent it Canada Post to me, doh! =) Next time, ha (actually, drop me a PM next time you do something like this, we can split the shipping costs or something).

Cool. That is a pretty tight swing. Might have to reconsider now... Thanks.

Edit: They are all gone now!:lol_hitti

Sorry dude, I got the last one. The peer pressure was just too much for me. I think I have crossed the ratchet user/ratchet collector line. :)

I was just gonna say, once you get a 3/8", then you'll have to find a 1/2", and then if you are like some of the rest of us you'll end up looking (with great difficulty) for a 1/4". Just speaking from personal experience. Like them all real well though.

Thanks for this tip! Just grabbed 2 of these too (with the same strategy as before)... There are still 10 left...

For anyone (like me, probably) looking for a 1/4" version, they can be had for US$11.95 here. In fact, this guy has multiples of all 3 sizes in stock, but his prices are higher...

On that 1/2 in in the ebay auction the knurling looks... slightly imperfect to me.

I'd like to get one of these in a really long handle 1/2" drive, anybody know what number/letter that would be to search for? or how long of a handle I should be able to find?

Hi, in the other thread on Proto there is a link to a big PDF.
Pictures and part numbers are down the page .

http://www.blackhawkbyproto.com/xhtml/literature/ProtoNewProducts_P20635.pdf

It’s mainly about the new ratchets but it also has the older big dog ratchets.

I just bought a ½ and 3/8 but they are not here yet.
I went with the older style, cheaper and look pretty heavy.
Cheap on e-bay.
I paid 50 bucks plus shipping for the two long handle units
J5450 is more what you want, I think.

5450P for a 1/2"-drive with a 16" length.
5450PF for the same thing with a flex head...

That looks like a custom finished knurling, probably in response to another thread where concerns of aggressive knurling hurting the hands were expressed.:lol_hitti

Danglerb,
Do you have any of these yet? If not I'm sure you are going to like them.

Its only been 35 minutes, give me a little time to get one. ;)

I have a standard length 1/2" drive Proto, and a slightly long 3/8" as well as a standard 3/8" I do like the feel of the 5249P, very solid ratchet motion, but for 1/4" I want a TINY head like the Mac Microtouch I have has, and I just bought the FHLF80, so pretty much all I want is a long handle 1/2" at this point for the times when a breaker bar isn't convenient.

The pictures in the Ebay item listed above are of two different ratchets. The number stamped on the ratchet plate doesn't match the number listed in the auction.

Yeah but it is probably just a 'stock' photo.
Look at his feedback.

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around; the photo is the actual product you will receive, while the description is "stock". Just like above, the Seller is selling an older model ratchet, while he swiped the description (and model number) of the current ratchet from the website...

Yeah, but in the world of buyer beware Ebay, accuracy is important. One ratchet has 52 teeh while the other has 24. It's important to know what I'm buying up front to prevent disappointment later.

That's true! Worth an email to the Seller for sure, but it certainly makes more sense that these eBay people are discounting a discontinued product...

Anybody looking to get one of these willing to add another for the $1 extra shipping and then ship it to me in Canada? Seller won't ship to Canada and I really want one of these!

I can paypal the money upfront of course.

Thanks (can PM if you'd like)

Could it be that everybody on the garagejournal who wants one already has one?? :(

Can anybody suggest a different source/seller that might have these for sale for $10 (or even $15 is they have reasonable shipping).

Thanks BMW but that seller is the one that won't ship to Canada :(

I was hoping to either find somebody in the US that wants one and is willing to partner up with me so I can get one as well, or find a different seller who is willing to ship to Canada..

So, what is the part number for the ratchet? Is it the 24 or 45 tooth?
