Thomas,

I just finished reading all 208 pages of this amazing story.

It reads like a good book.....I could'nt put it down.

Congratulations on doing such a superb job on so many different aspects of the project(s).

I am ready for more!

Hello Mike04Aero and a Holiday welcome to you. As you might remember my daughter and I considered from the very beginning of the property clean up, of doing a book about the shop story but doing this thread has kind of been the same thing. If you're ready for more, sit tight, it's on the way. :)

Thomas,

Thanks for posting your Christmas greetings photos. Your Beautiful Bride looks like she was having a splendid holiday season. I hope that Cameron was home to enjoy the holidays with you two.

I just found a 4 ton Walker to go with my small Walker. I am headed to Summit on Saturday for another lift pad! My goal for 2012 is to learn how to post photos on this site. I am a bit of a slow learner.

Best Wishes for the holidays & thanks again for sharing your saga.

Hello Sweet Old Bill. From all indications my sweetie had and continues to have a joyous holiday season. Cameron was indeed home for the holidays and was the lensman on that photo shoot plus another upcoming one.

I look forward to you posting your newly acquired Walker Big Boy on here. You definitely know the correct size lift pad for it!! ;) The more pictures you post, the better you get at it.

More Saga To Go - MSTG !

Thomas, you mean I'm not in the Center Of The Universe? I don't head east very often but next time who know I just may pop in, but waxing, uh I think I've got a doctor excuse to cover that.

Yea, the R4's are good when I'm working on the property and moving snow, but I probably should have a zero turn for the yard rather than the JD2330. I don't have a good picture of it on the WEB, but you can see it in the back ground of this image.

Not having proper weight in the rear has been a problem for me moving snow, I need to get a 5' blade to help with the snow and add the needed counter weight.

You did a beautiful job on those wheels! See ya some day.

That's a very nice, handy size John Deere Will. I don't know how many acres or trees you have to mow around but as for Timber Haven...

...in about 3.5 hours and it just sips Diesel. I looked at the JD ZTR mowers, but the Kubota was just better engineered and constructed IMHO. (BTW, did you know Kubota powder coats the mower deck? :) ) I really believe once you use a ZTR mower, whom ever is the manufacturer, you'll never be without one again.

I love that property, I wonder how long it would take with my JD, lol:

Thomas,

Thanks I love the JD, and the loader. And the trees are minimal here at the house on the 3.25 acres. If I was set up with your trees, yes a Zero turn would have been the only way! I had looked at the Kubota Tractors, and liked the Deere from a hydro-stat floor control better (I also grew up on green). But I've heard others say the same about there Zero Turns.

Hey Thomas, been away for awhile. I lost my job and now am in school learning, the correct way, to weld. Santa brought me a HTP Invertig 221 and I am hooking it up tomorrow. It has been a rough six months, but I am trying to make it a positive thing. I missed this thread and will have to go back to see what is going on.

Here is a quote from exactly 2 years ago, page 1 at the end of my very first post on the Restored 1930's Auto Shop thread; "I'll post some more pictures if there is any interest" Little did I have any idea at that time, here I'd be 2 years later, page 209, 4,172 replies, untold number of pictures, close to 1.2 million views, umpteen countries, continents and states checking in... I would still be posting pictures, information, history tidbits, and more about all the activity going on in our little corner of the world!

As you know by now, originally the shop was very disorganized...

IMG_6902.jpg

...but I soon...

IMG_6892.jpg

IMG_6881.jpg

...proud that they had managed to instill in me...

IMG_6955.jpg

...and organized work ethic.

IMG_6911.jpg

I learned early on that a well-equipped work shop will ...

IMG_6908.jpg

...have every imaginable piece of equipment at the ready, even the kitchen sink should the need arise.

IMG_7008.jpg

I've also learned to make use of the material at hand...

IMG_7012.jpg

... since everything has its place...

IMG_7030.jpg

... and a place for...

IMG_7019.jpg

...everything. Waste nothing.

IMG_6951.jpg

It's especially important to...

IMG_7004.jpg

...use the most important tool of all, the one between your ears.

IMG_7000.jpg

I have to admit there are times I really get "into it" out there and Chris has consistently been patient about it all and always willing to help me...

...COOL my jets as it were...

IMG_6958.jpg

...because without her...

IMG_6960.jpg

IMG_6979.jpg

IMG_6961.jpg

It takes two..............and some T L C... Tom Loves Chris.

So on this, our two year anniversary of this thread, a heartfelt thank you to all of you who have taken an interest and been following my (our) exploits out here in The Center Of The Universe, to those who have supplied additional information, posts and pictures, and to those who keep encouraging me. :) And a big thanks to Ryan, his staff and moderators, Bull, Jack Olson and others, for all their diligent behind the scenes work at the Garage Journal which makes this possible for all of us to enjoy.

I'm unfortunately (or fortunately) accumulating material faster that I can get it posted, so watch this space for another exciting, thrilling chapter ............

Congrats on your two year anniversary. Only took me three long nights to read this whole thread. Some incredible work you've done on your place. I hope someday I can do the same thing and get my dream garage.

I'm with hobbitss, though. MORE TOOL SHED! I'm an insanely curious person, and I'd never have been able to just leave that pile alone. I'd have to dig through it and see what's in there. Looking forward to two more years!

The funny thing is he had to put it all away! He's in the middle of a project needing some of those items in the pictures - it was like a "Where's Waldo" scene, wasn't it? Who would have known we'd still be at it after two years! Thanks for sticking with us; there's more coming (he's camera crazy), so keep on following.
(we didn't have a problem finding the kitchen sink - we have 6 of those at one of our apartments -- nice new word you coined, charlief1)

I saw the first image and thought "Nice Sink.." since "Out in the Garage." would be where I would store an extra sink... And, I didn't find the axe as a hood prop a problem, just another alternative use of a handy tool...
But there has to be a better vacuum testing tool than the Plunger... Somehow I can't see how you would be able to maintain a stable vacuum pressure...
I was also wondering if the Jump starter attached to your pants was a good substitute for Caffeine??

Here is my reply from page 5.

Both the before and after pictures are the epitome of what this site is about. The decades of history in the before and the dedication, hard work and attention to detail in the after. If you post every pic you have it won't be enough for us.

Didn't know at the time that you would take me literally.:lol_hitti

Haven't posted much since then but still here watching. Will probably still be here in 2 years also. Awesome thread.

Thomas and Chris, congratulations on the DosVersary!

Chris, that large Crescent wrench of yours must come in very handy when you have to adjust the 'Big Nut' you're married too. LOL And I thought that Vaudeville was dead; when are you two taking that wacky show on the road?

Not to suggest that there was a lack of props in your photo shoot, but I did notice the glaring absence of 'The Anvil'. I fully expected to see it proudly displayed next to Gus; after all, they both are big hunks of Old Iron! Perhaps in a future episode of the T&C Camera Comedy Company's production....:lol_hitti

We couldn't do an anniversary photo shoot without The Anvil - that would be sacrilege!. It was also all decorated with our resident elf in the Christmas picture on pg. 208. (You're falling down on the job, Omphaloskeptic! I think Tom cheated moving it from the barn to the shop - the JD sure comes in handy sometimes.) Look in picture #1, #3, and #16 for a glimpse of the "other" one Tom takes for a walk sometimes. Like I said earlier, it's like a "Where's Waldo" scene. I don't think any of us has seen it all... yet.

I just have one question.

I bet that Kubota Zero Turn is fantastic for what you need to do. What size is the cutting deck ? I got a Hustler late last year but the Diesel version was to big for me and what I need.

My current one has a 60" (152 cm) deck and is a 28 hp diesel, seen on the right below.

IMG_0938.jpg

The first Kubota I tried out there (on the left) had a 72" (183 cm) deck, with the same 28 hp diesel engine. I have too many trees and that one was just too big. I can actually mow faster with the smaller deck. I don't have to maneuver as much. But for a while when I had them both, Cameron and I would tag team mowing out there and it didn't take long at all.

TESTIFY!!!

I have a Hustler 44" myself, and can do 3/4 acre in 35 minutes flat. One of the best investments I have ever made. Hustler is also very well made. I beat the bejesus out of mine and it could care less. All 7 gauge and powder coated too!

DSC01467.jpg

ZTR mowers are a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of them you'd never want to mow any other way I think. Good looking machine. Powder coating is just the way to go, don't you think?

Well yes funny for her, I'm the one who had to put is all away. While it was fun- check that -

IMG_7002.jpg

it was a HOOT, (do you suppose this is the glamourous mental image passengers have of commercial airline pilots on their days off??) :dunno: still it just felt.... well it felt odd with everything in disarray and yet at the same time it didn't feel all that abnormal for the shop.

IMG_6842.jpg

Within a hour after the photo shoot...

IMG_6840.jpg

...everything was largely back to "normal". Chris is correct that I'm heavily involved multi-tasking on several projects at the moment. You'll see them here shortly.

Joe, using a plunger is the "old school" way to achieve vacuum pressure. With my highly skilled A&P training background getting it stable is just a matter of, practice, practice, practice. :D

As for the Jump starter Caffeine substitute, you better believe it! :wtf:

Well dang, I must be falling down on the job; there it is, plain as day and not nearly as hidden as Waldo! I guess I was simply distracted by the lovely 'Christmas couple' shown in the photos, or perhaps it was that I was looking for a powder coated anvil (Walker red) sitting proudly on a powder coated stand (Holly leaf green). LOL Come-on Thomas, the P.C. guys are depending on you for their Christmas bonus project!
