A few pictures before, during, and after on the Athol 614 I picked up for $10 a couple months back at an estate sale. Any ideas on how old it is?

Nice Athol! Man I've got to get me one of those... BTW, for $10... YOU ****...

Age? Hmm.... I would guess earlier model. The later models have removable jaw inserts and the 3-hole base is kind of one big triangular casting. Early 1900's is my best guess.

cbacres, what jaw size on the Parker 21? cool vise! I like it!

Outlaw, The jaws are 3-1/4" wide and they open to 4". It is a neat vice. It works nice and smooth. I'm wanting to fiquire out how old it is.

I been meaning to ask, did you sneak in and put this decal on my box?:D

Just finished my Reed 103 1/2. I am going to paint the lettering white on both the Reed and the Wilton. I am happy with how it turned out. I figured the polishing would have come out closer to the Wilton, especially since I didn't do any polishing on that. Here are the pictures, hope you all enjoy my take on restoring these.

Flash - they look great....working on old vises is pretty fun and they will outlast all of us

1steve - that is a wild looking vise...never seen anything like it before....buy it and evaluate it for us

daddy - maybe mid 30's or earlier on the Athol

OK I picked up two more small vises again today, that's 4 this weekend.

These fit the :dunno: category well. The mini DP vise has a swiveling removable jaw to allow holding slightly tapered parts. Jaws are 1-1/2" wide and while its the same width as two of my small Palmgren DP vises, it's half the height and less than half the weight at a guess. It may be shop made but if so by a master craftsman. This thing has details I've never seen on a shop made vise. in fact both of these fit that category.

An example is the screw holding the bottom retention plate does that, plus it has a machined tip to engage the main screw *** to keep it in the dynamic jaw. one screw and all the parts are loose in your hand!

The other is really odd. Besides resembling a post vise in shape somewhat (but no other post vise features...) It has three alignment slide pins to keep the jaws parallel, but those are about the only parallel surfaces there are! This also does not fit the usual fit/finish of a shop made vise. if it was its was made by a master gunsmith IMO, as EVERYTHING about this vise smacks gun. The metal feels like gun metal, its hard like gun metal, and has that finish/patina of an old gun also. The holes in the 2" jaws for the main screw are in and out of non perpendicular surfaces, as are all three alignment slide pins. :wtf:

Then it has the 4 pin holes in each jaw top. about 1/8" dia and 3/8" deep or so. I originally was thinking forming pins for bending small bits of metal of wire but Now I'm leaning strongly to pins to hold irregular parts; like gun parts? :dunno:

That main screw handle is odd also; its a pressed in pin, and someone managed to bend it, probably by using the box end wrench extension trick...

EDIT: BTW, I can find NO mechanism for how the main screw is captivated in the static jaw... :wtf:

Neat additions to the collection, but VERY odd.

Picked up this Wilton at a business closing sale for $25. I can't seem to find ANYTHING on it searching. It has all these numbers stamped on it that result in no hits on google. I'm guessing it was made in '08 judging by the numbers underneath. Anyone know anything about this thing?

Demographic: Thanks. I saw one the other day and passed. I couldn't find any brand name on it, and I couldn't find a mark from the country of origin. Maybe it was a cheap Asian imitation. Maybe it was a good vise. I'm going back to look a little closer.

Since the late 60's or so on, the "trademark ID" for import Asian vises are the chrome plated handles and main screw, as well as the swivel lock. If these are plated then almost certainly imported. Also, if the paint is chipped and Bondo/filler shows, it's an import. they used Bondo to cover the crappy castings.

Yeah it was timing but I think more the seller keeping his word with a verbal deal also... I know he was getting offers for probably more after he promised to hold it for me the night before. He told me the next day he probably listed it for less than what it was worth but he knows he made a deal... Lot of people don't keep their word now days just for a couple of bucks more. I went through that with a drill press here recently. Anyways... Guy kept his word and now the Wilton has a good home

Here is an interesting one. Adams Co. No. 102 3.5" jaws. I have never found any information about it.

Quick question: which Wilton models have the jaws bolted on from the back?

Ok, some more info. I've got a line on this bad boy. It says 90-600 on the side which I'm now guessing means it's a 600S. True?

Second question: Hey AutoPts: what's the best way to ship this half way across the country and what's it going to cost?

Very nice! Yeah, only the largest Wiltons' had the mounting on the back like that.

Shipping would probably depend. If it's commercial to commercial, check freightquote.com or uship.com, which you can just strap it to a pallet or crate it up and get it delivered LTL. Alternatively you can have them hold at the terminal and you can pick it up yourself.

I'm almost willing to bet it weighs more than 150 lbs (especially when considering packing it properly)... You could have him ship the static jaw in one package, then the dynamic jaw, handle, and swivel base in another package. Usually FedEx is cheapest for that but wouldn't hurt to check all carriers. I don't think it would fit in a USPS flat-rate box... lol...

Or maybe just cut the Flat Rate Box to pieces and plaster it around that monster of a vise and hope nobody at the post office notices what you are attempting to do.

I picked up this little 4 inch vise off craigslist for $50, and apart from looking like it got attacked by a crayon wielding 5 year old, it's in amazingly good condition.

Can anyone tell me how deep the serrations were on the original jaws?

JoeNewhouse

It's a Parker 824, and tips the scale at about 85 pounds; does anyone know the rough date range of manufacture, I'd SWAG it at 1935, but that's just a guess. I think the patent says 1930 on the side, tough to make out...........Oh yeah, first post, :shocking:
