I have a full set of those that were given to me as a Christmas gift about 15 years ago or so. They still look brand new, as I'm not sure I've ever even touched them, other than to put them in my toolbox and when rearranging the toolbox.

I must be one of the few guys that likes and uses the Craftsman quick wrenches. Would still like to find a metric set.

Hit a few estate sales today but only the first one was worth it. Retired Air Force mechanic, then sherrifs deput then tow truck operator. Had a huge amount of tools but not much I didn't already have two or three of. Picked up a Blackhawk metric impact set, 3 Petersen welding vise grips, a Utica and Crescent 4" adjustable wrenches, Proto 7/16-1/2" obstruction wrench, 2 of the old Proto yellow handle screwdrivers, a ziplock full of Craftsman USA router bits, an almost complete set of Indestro nut drivers with the pouch (anybody got the missing 5/16"?) and Craftsman Crown toolbox that was one of the older metal handle ones with a few goodies inside, three lifting loops and a few old beer company labeled openers. $30.50 total.

Nothing much for me today. Went to 2 sales without any motivation and walked away with a giant copper tub (35 gal?) and a Booth China plate made exclusively for Tiffany and Co.

Just called another estate sale buddy and i'm headed off to his house to check out his stash of Plomb tools. I'll post pics if i get anything.

Only stopped by one garage sale today, spent 13$, and got a decent deal.
I got a real smooth working Challenger 1661 1/2".
Some proto, blackhawk, williams... all american made. Also some little 1/4" that say USA on them but I can not find any other marks.

I see some Proto in there Nick, good job!

Nice pickin Presto, those Craftsman speeders look almost new!

My first estate sale stop yielded a Craftsman box full of everything from Craftsman down to China for $5
pic01959.jpg

Garage sale listing "tools", this was the best "tools" they had...$2
pic01958.jpg

Next stop was an estate sale(everything must go), no tools but I did get a pony. Pony chaise lounge that is, paid substantially more but I think there is still some meat on the bones. :D
pic01957.jpg

Last stop was a Carny Guy living estate sale. Large lot out in the country, everything for sale where it sat. It was a nasty building and the weather had everything mushy wet but we stuck it out and I came home with this entire shelf of contents for $40. There are a couple organizers full of bolt/hardware etc, plus a lot of extra drawers for these organizers(Outlaw, I will post the leftover drawers to see if there are any you need).

Not a tool, but I love stuff like this. I've got to rearrange my plate collection. I just have it sitting, just to show it off. It came in the mail today!

I saw this in my Email first (Without pics) and was thinking it was painted collector plates (as in China plates...) :spit:

One estate sale today and the tool room was DEVASTATED. You could see where TONS of stuff had been taken out already.

All that I saw was this cool metal storage box.

Onli-1 Ring Tool Mfg. Asbury Park NJ. I find no information on the web about Onli-1.

It's needs a dramatic cleaning and some paint I think.

I stopped by that flea market today. Most of the stuff was junk but I did manage to grab a couple things worth getting.

Powr-Kraft 5 inch 1/2 extension, Blackhawk 3 inch 3/8 extension, Millers Falls 4 bit offset screwdriver, 1/4 craftsman wrench:
59EAB096-2771-470E-951A-9DA1A63DBD7C-70758-000108654DFCCA97_zps6b3cb601.jpg

Blue Point 3/4 5/8 open ended combo, New Britain 19/32 11/16 open ended combo, Wizard 1/2 9/16 box end combo (my favorite of the bunch) and a Williams Superrench 7/16 1/2 open ended combo:

Got this Craftsman box:
0ED81AE5-BE77-452D-808F-FCE963522D89-70758-000108652AB7920E_zps7f96e51f.jpg

It was a little rough, but after I banged out a few dents and greased the drawer slides, it functions just fine. If only I had the key for it.

I also got some channellock snips for my dad. Paid 11 bucks for everything, How'd I do?

Picked up a few items today.

Big 24" Plomb pipe wrench. And a small Plomb keychain screwdriver. Guy must have had it on his keychain most of his adult life. I guess I have enough pipe wrenches now!

303 Protectant. This is the best stuff for rubber and vinyl stuff on your car. It is expensive, over $50 a gallon, but I always take it at garage sales for pennies on the dollar.

Nice new shiny Proto professional 1/2" extension.

Cool tin.

Best thing, an old Stanley folding yardstick, wood with brass hinges and edges. Folds down to 9".

I lied, I ended up hitting a sale that did not open until late, a buddy gave me a call and told me about it. Complete craftsman sets, and much more. I payed about twenty for all of it.

nine4gmc cleans up as always! Any locks or keys for me? :)

haha, the first ******* drawer I looked at had this in it
pic01963.jpg

I got outbid on these three lots, averaged $100 each to the same guy. There was a bunch of Craftsman inside but not enough compared to the China **** for me to bid more. I passed him my business card and mentioned I collect Craftsman, he said he'd call and that he has lots.

Glenmore, Nice find on that awesome Plomb pipe wrench. I've been looking for one that size for a couple of years. Thought today was going to be a bust, no tools listed in any of the sales. So it was a nice surprise to find this junk. I like old body shop stuff so the nickel plated solid brass Binks regulator and Kellogg drier is a great find for me. I also like the Sharpe cup gun. Total cost, way too cheap.

You guy are doing pretty good for this early in the season!

I did OK, but its pretty slow around here right now, not many sale and mostly junk.

First stop I asked about tools and she brought out a bucket of mostly plumbing fittings, but some tools and with that much copper I asked how much for the whole bucket: $10, so I bought it all

I wound up with about 17 Lbs of just copper fittings and about 3X of brass fittings and valves than is in this pic,, plus a bunch of solder and

attachment.php

The amount of tools mixed and buried in the bucket was surprising,The channel locks are pretty big, 15" but no name at all? :dunno: Pre soldering tubing wire bushes, Air nozzle, semi decent scissors, a good marker, and a beat putty knife.

attachment.php

then there were 7 sets of tubing cutters, 1 Ridgid, 3 General, one Imperial Eastman and 2 No names, plus a drill bit an three hole saws, only one was high quality.

attachment.php

Second stop was a sort of estate or divorce sale? :dunno: A woman and her son. I could have looked at her all day long... But I didn't :D

3 sets of 3/8's husky (USA) socket rails, some misc hardware, a finger/hand excersizer and 3 "Hot pads" this are cool you pop the "button" inside and the thing "freezes" but it's hot, not cold, I have a couple already, and they are not bad.

attachment.php

Also got 23 sets of hidden flush hinges, and 2 sets of Falcon lever type door locks. there were 2 more sets of Shlage lever handle latches but those were silly money. The falcons are probably a better lock anyway.

attachment.php

Another stop got me a pair of dykes, a Proto ignition wrench and some gun stuff, scope mount bases, percussion caps and tools and a magazine for a semi Auto.

attachment.php

Last stop all I got was an Aladdin Kerosene mantle lamp

I went to look at a craftsman model 150 drill press with 3 axis vice mounted to it. They wanted 179 for it. I passed (too heavy for just me) but found some old pyro car models from the 60' unopened ( 3 for $2 each), small vice, 2 metric crows foot sets(one flare nut),*all $5 each* 70's USA made dremel tool with speed control box for $10 and a free proto 3/8 extension. There was also an old Dayton welder and metal chop saw the owners were not sure on selling yet. I have them my # and might grab them.

i enjoy seeing the non-tool things that people buy. My dad used to buy and sell Aladdins. Outlaw, do you mind me asking what you gave?

That one is not an antique, it may be edging towards vintage. 80's maybe? It's a model 23, and I gave $5. Worth it if only for the glass chimney.

I have at least 4 of the Aladdin in the house, and a lot on other brand kero burners, plus a box full of parts for old kerosene lamps, Aladdin or other wise. One of the Aladdin lamps is 1930's IIR, Clear glass body and stand and I have the holder for a shade, but no shade.

Hi Les, I think the reason is the same as why I don't usually go to group or church sales---

The seller has to load the stuff into their car and drive it somewhere. They are unlikely to load all the stuff I look for, and if they've made the effort, then they want too much money for it.

If it is just junk from under the workbench in the garage, and they haven't looked at it in years, it's easy to take a buck or 2 just to get it cleared out. Esp. if it is rusty, oily, dirty, or old.

Also, I've noticed a strong tendency among those of us that post up here to buy stuff most sellers don't think has any real value. You wouldn't take no value junk to a car boot sale, especially if it was dirty or heavy, right? (Or would they? I'd think it would be mostly smaller, lighter stuff.)

I LOVE group or church sales, and the small Flea markets I go to are, I think, equivalent to a boot sale; at the smaller Flea markets, a fair percentage of the sellers are "weekend warriors" not FM pros working the "circuit". At the bigger FM's the percentage is too damn small to be worthwhile adn you have to rely on the larger tool selelrs but I don't see many good deals from those guys myself.

Sure most of the the sellers even at the smaller FM's are there week after week, but the percentage isn't bad. Even if some pro's are overpriced, I just let them keep the stuff they think is worth more than I am willing to pay. (They want it worse than I do, and I sometimes tell them that... Over time they get that message enough the prices drop. I might not get to take advantage of it but sometimes I do.) But even the pro's sometimes sell good stuff for cheap if they don't have a clue on that item. It costs NOTHING to ask...

I've made some of my better small scores at places like these; an antique black powder derringer for $1? a Snap-on 1/4" ratchet for .50c? (2X!), innumerable misc tools for $1eacjh or less for top name brands that the current owners has in a box of "junk"?

Yes, they do bring big heavy things to these venues. I once bought a Parker 974-1/2 vise (4-1/2" jaws, and I think something around 75 lbs?) at one of these for $12 IIR, and they threw in a skateboard to get it to the car with...

I would say 50% or more of my best deals are onesy twosy buys from people selling "junk" One mans junk is another man's treasure... :pimpflash

Wow Outlaw, I might have to change my tune. You have a real history of getting the good stuff, so you would know!

It does sound like most of that was small easily thrown in the car and taken to the sales type of stuff. I can't imagine the thought process that loads a heavy vise in the car, and then sells it for $12!!

You are right that we see value where most others don't and the opposite is true too.

When I lived in San Diego I'd go to the flea market all the time. They have a great one. Lots of every week retail sellers (that actually have stuff worth buying) and rows of weekend or one timers. The only one I've been to here in Houston was hot hot hot, and not at all a fun time.

I've been getting my junk fix from the estate sales and pawnshops. They are mostly air conditioned :)

I wouldn't know them that well, but the old man would have. He had a pretty good eye and a lot of knowledge, and he liked to trade and peddle. I have a few but they are packed in boxes from the last time I moved several years ago to move in with the wife. Didn't trust her cats then nor our kids now-2 and 5 yrs old. They're the old ones and my brother and I both have real nice old shades to go with them. My dad has been gone 2.5 years. He would have been 95 last month. I loved going to sales with him when I was a kid

To be fair I'm sure its area specific also, where people with the "good stuff" go to sell changes periodically, and I've had dry spells at different venues.

What I HAVE noticed is if the FM is dead (I've come out without spending a cent, more than once...) then the yard sales or estate sales are better bets, but sometimes Estate sales are "dead" (Pun intended! ) and sometimes the yard sales dry up.

You have to keep at it and wait out the bad times. Going once or twice and concluding "This ***** forgetaboutit", could get you to ignore a good source.

The list of places for a deal is huge, you have to work them and watch for long term patterns.

Local Small (Monthly?) FM's
Large weekly FM,s
Yard sales
Block Sales
Church sales (Most of these have clothing and other donations but occasionally, (That deringer... :rocker: )
Thrift stores
Antique stores
Surplus stores
Trailer park sales
Estate Sales
Auctions
CL
Eprey
"Penny saver" adds in the junk mail
Our newspaper (Remember those? used to have a "Mini Ads" section in classifieds that was for items under I think $50 for a buck a line. (Long gone)

And once in a while word of mouth. (Hey see if Outlaw is interested, he buys all sorts of junk!)

Then there are the "free" ads, and Freecycle. Not a lot of tools there but once in a while... :pimpflash

All of this is vital. Especially the long term patterns, stick with it and you'll find the "inner circles" that different groups belong to and know who your competition is and who you can become swapping partners with. I love to trade so I always try to meet people after I see them in a dirty garage with me a couple sales in a row. Sometimes they are cool, sometimes they are greedy old bastards:mad: Not to mention the ads, you'll learn the sellers that constantly post different **** but it's always ****. Catchy titles but high priced junk,or the ones that list "tools" to get you there and they have a screwdriver every time. Pay attention and you can cut down on wasted trips but matter what you do, there will be plenty of "no sales" before you find the best deals.

I'm gonna have to agree with Outlaw on the flea market being a good place to find good buys on tools.

I do this sort of thing as a hobby and tools are nowhere near the only thing i buy. Anything is on the table as long as i know what i'm buying and a decent profit can be made.

Everything pictured below was had for under 40.00 at todays flea market a few blocks from the house. Tools are usually hard to come by there considering the location but the people that do will hand them over very cheaply.

15" Diamalloy crescent
32 oz Plumb ball peen hammer
Assorted Starrett tools
3 like new sets of Channellock pliers
small xcelite drivers and ratcheting driver
nice architectural salvage door handles
Palmgren drill press vise
General punch set, never used.
