Great looking table... I'm making one soon, I like your proportions.

Thanks. Bought a pile of random sized tubing from a buddy of mine. Abut ten minutes of pen and paper and that's what I came up. Then built the rack above it to hold all the left over material. Lol.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I work for our family business as an electronics tech, we service the radios for 7 counties in north central KS and 2 counties in Neb, hopefully adding a third this week. Jus a little family business so our shop for the business is also the shop for personal use.

This week I'm working on setting up an 05 Tahoe as a police vehicle, today I pulled all the panels off the rear in the back to run the strobe wires for the rear and mount the strobe power supply. Installed the rear strobe bulbs, one of the wires pulled out of one of the bulbs with very little tension, called the company, they will warranty but that will take too long so it will be stock and ordered a new one from a supplier. Next worked on fabbing some brackets to mount red and blue led's to the arrow stick in the rear window. Sprayed those with truck bed coating and headed home.

On my way home I stopped at my cousin's Napa store/ body shop to see what he was up too and bought an evercraft roll around shop stool and he let me drool over his snap on tools er uh put together my stool. Then I helped work on putting a fifth wheel hitch in a friends new truck.

That was my day in the shop. hopefully I'll get some pics tomorrow. New to the site and love it so far sorry for my rant.

Cut out a 1" tall, 18" strip of badly rusted metal from the trunk lid of the 68 Spitfire, cut a new patch and welded it in. Getting better at it. It's pretty close to the right profile and a skim coat of filler will take care of any irregularities. Still have another 24" to go on the trunk lid.

At least I know I can fix this myself and save $800 for a replacement!

Finished polishing the fuel tank, front fairing and front fender on our new to us H-D Ultra Classic. I detailed the engine chrome while I had it apart over the past couple of weeks doing the big bore upgrade so it looks good but the paint needed some serious attention.

After polishing the paint I decided to add the LED turn signals that I had picked up but have not had time to install. I installed the rear ones last week but haven't seem to find the time to install the fronts as they required a little more time due to the fairing having to be removed.

The wife got home from work and suggested we go for a ride and get some dinner. I didn't argue, I closed up the shop early and wheeled the bike outside and snapped a couple of completed pictures.

Done.

Labeled all of my cabinets and tool box drawers. This should help during the tech day.

Jim

Jim, I admire your willingness to have others over to your shop for "wrenching parties". I have toyed with the idea but cannot bring myself to let others handle my tools. I wish I could but I think I would need a straight jacket by the end of the day. I do enjoy looking at the pictures of your wrenching parties though. It is a great way to spend time as a group.

Haven't got anything done yet. Just warming it up and clearing off my 22' long bench and getting to put some corrugated metal on the wall. I'll have some before and after pics later on in the day.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

My Chamberlain garage door opener suddenly stopped working. It would just click when activated, the motor would not engage and made no noise.

A google search showed what the flashing beep codes on the system board meant. http://www.doorsandopeners.com/html/openerledflashing.php

It was an error 5 - "Possible RPM sensor failure or motor overheated, unplug opener to reset unit" . The suggested fix (unplug power to reset) did not work. I figured the unit was DOA and started to price out a replacement.

Out of curiosity and having nothing to lose so I pulled off the system board. I found two cold solder joints and reflowed them. Reconnected and now having a fully functioning garage opener again. :bounce:

Sorry, no before and after pics. I didn't think it would actually work!

The cost of a new unit now stays in my wallet !

Cheers !

Put A-arm bushings in my 1949 cadillac, next day I heard a clunk in the front of my 67 Chevelle, the upper bushings loose! They were urethane, replaced them with Moog OEM bushings. We got real good at replacing bushings!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Attacked the rust on the bootlid for the Triumph Spitfire.

bootlidrustedlarge-sm_zps50543af0.jpg

Rust extends about 1" and 30" wide.

bootlidrustcloseup-sm_zps68c8b79e.jpg

Top layer is rotted out, inner panel has surface rust only, easily treated.

bootlidrusttestfit-sm_zpsf0cdf097.jpg

Replacement patch cut out and test fit. Lots of trimming needed, Not going for a shaped fit as this area needs a skim coat of filler. Filler will be no deeper than 3/32".

bootlidrustspotwelded-sm_zpsa478dabf.jpg

Hundreds and hundreds of tiny 1/8" spotwelds. I blew through the metal a bit,and I need to go to .024" wire instead of the .030" I have on board now.

bootlidrustnewmetal-sm_zps56ae6035.jpg

Finished results are good. Not perfect, but I succeeded in replacing the bad metal with new solid material and I can work from this. I only did about a 12" wide section to test and I'm happy with it. Got to get the smaller wire to do the next sections. This repair will save me $800 for the replacement panel. Definitely worth the effort!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I haven't posted anything here in a few weeks and I've actually had a number of projects done. I'll have to catch up.

To start, made a couple of mods to my ShopSmith. A safety switch that has been on my shelf for some time and a box that rests on the tubes to corral all the goodies.

Another switch - located next to the man door. This one to shut off the air compressor.

Sat in the open bay door in the evening sun after working cutting and draging dead trees to the burn pile. It was nice in the $10 resale shop bar stool, that thing is comfy.

Pulled the primary apart on a 1999 Road King for belt replacement. I also noted the rear pulley on the belt system and the adjusting block in the primary need replacing. I guess a trip to the Harley Shop today is in order.

Hung my maxjax pump for testing/fitting:

20130325_190627.jpg

Then decided to trim it a little and paint it.

20130328_224125.jpg

Still waiting on all my fittings... also thinking of hanging the lower bracket right under the pump so I can put the metal spacers for the max jax... not sure if I should do that though.. Or just put the spacers in the cabinet/toolchest.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Finally moved the box of red Koni adjustable struts after more than a year of fumbling over it on the garage floor. :rocker:

That is to say, I went to the auto parts store this morning, borrowed their spring compressor tool, came home, read a quick refresher on TDIClub.com, went down to the corner hardware store and bought two 3/4" x 5" galvanized pipe *******, came home and proceeded to swap out a very tired set of front struts. (I'm not sure they had ever been changed, but presuming they had at some point in the 175k this car has on it, they were due to be changed again...) Cleaned up my tools, called the alignment shop and made an appointment for first thing Monday, packed up the spring compressor and returned it to the auto parts store.

It may not seem like much, but it's progress on a project that has long been neglected. I installed the Koni adjustables in the rear of my 2004 VW Jetta_TDI_Wagon over a year ago, and have been meaning to finish the job by doing the fronts when I was feeling better.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I did nothing in the garage and I'm glad. Last week I reefed on the tire and the driver's side rocked laterally. I can see the inner tie rod moving back and forth. Passenger side I saw a little bit of play in the ball joint. I bought parts, then spent as I said before, 4 days under the car trying to extract a stuck stud in the turbo where the downpipe bolts on.

I thought I could get to the tie rod from underneath. No access. I hate working on the suspension or under the car at all so I said screw it, made an appointment up the road.

Note, I already had tires mounted, new struts front and rear put on, and an alignment at another shop 2 weeks ago (Conti Extreme Contact DWS are awesome on dry and wet, BTW. Not so great in the snow, still need snow tires for next year.) So anyways, the shop aligned it. How they aligned it with a bad inner tie rod and bad ball joint, I can't say. They didn't say anything nor did they center the steering wheel.

That shop use to be good. They are so busy now they've gotten way over their head and their service as well as how they treat the customer just ***** now. I don't even want to go back and say something about doing an alignment on worn out parts and the crooked steering wheel. I trust the shop up the road from me.

So here is why I don't do suspension work (well, steering too.) I had the parts on the seat for them and called this afternoon. I'm told it isn't a driver's inner, it is the passenger outer and the ball joint on the passenger is good, the driver's side is bad. They grabbed parts from their supplier matching the quality I had already bought and installed and was working on the alignment. So, had I done it, I would have done the wrong sides.

Wifey is driving me over and we are waiting to pull out on the road. She jokes with the next car coming, "Hey, there's your car." Black Jettas are like opinions, everyone has one. It gets closer and, well, everyone has one but I'm the only one with a Pittsburgh Penguin license plate on the front. My car goes bebopping by us and we follow up to the shop. My car gets pulled back in. Wifey is outside waiting before she gets the go-ahead from me to leave. While I waited for the girl up front to check on it in the back, my wife says my car left twice more while she was out waiting. The guy (owner) finally comes out front to tell me he's attempted to align it 3 times now to get the steering wheel centered. He's going to try once more. I flagged my wife to take off, she had to get ready for work. While I waited, I jumped on the net on the phone and looked up VW centering steering wheel. Seems like a lot of people complaining that they've gotten alignments and afterwards the wheel was always off-center. He finally comes back up and tells me it finally got centered.

$45/hour, fantastic guy, I've met some of his other techs, all seem great, 5 minutes from the house instead of 45 minutes into town (which is 5 minutes from work.) I find out he does tires and he could have gotten my DWS's that I paid $139 each for $124. Told him had I known he did tires, he would have done the tires and the struts and initial alignment. I just had those done while I was at the tire shop. He'll definitely be getting more work from me when I don't want to be doing it myself in the future. Car steers fantastic now and the steering wheel is straight!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

On my '36 Ford Pickup I fabricated the fuel line from the pump to the carb, I filled the steering gearbox and installed a new gasket, I open the boxes with the exhaust system and got it unpacked and test-fit on the truck. I'll have to tweek the end of the mufflers to get it to line up right.
I took off the front fenders in prep for tomorrow fitting a different pair. Also took off the grille shell and installed a better one. Trial fit, trial fit, trial fit.
REALLY nice day outside, finally! I'm tired of winter weather.

I cleaned a NP241 and prep'ed it for R&R. Reassembled the 14bolt in the rear of the '74 K20. Swept all of the metal and plastic shavings off of the shop floor. And cleaned out the parts/media tumbler. Good day but went fast.

I put the handles on a forged knife I am making for a KITH on a knife forum. This one is a Neo-Tribal style knife made from a rasp. Forged, hammer shaped, hand sanders, Heat Treated, polished and blued.

Finished up the front end work on my '55 I posted about back on page 189 with a very cheap but "new-ish" chrome front bumper. Not perfect but much better than the one I had.

Put bicycle inner tuber over my tailgate chains. Yeah, I need smaller diameter ones.

Nothing in the garage the past few days. Remodeling a room in the basement for my new reloading room.
The past few days has been drywall and taping. Today was sanding, I love sanding drywall... NOT... LOL.. Next is primer and building in all the bench work and shelves.
Then paint it all.
I need to get this little project done. I hear the garage calling.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Wow, that's beautiful. Where would I find a copper one like that? Are they hard to come by?

We found this one at a local auction. Got it for $55 but it needed a lot of cleaning. Used Brasso cleaner, was going to buff it to a high shine, but decided to use 800 grit sandpaper on it due to scratches and surface stains due to years of neglect. I then liked the satin finish so I used some Scotchbrite pads. Then I repainted the black on the emblem.

You can pick them up at antique stores, flee markets, and Craigslist. Then just built the mount out of a 2x4 sheet of MDF and painted it with Rustoleum Hammer Black paint to sort of match my garage cabinets.
