Just picked up this 1/3 hp model with sheet metal stand for $45. The grinder is in perfect shape with everything (tool rests, spark guards etc) still in place. Dated to 12/1/70 in green ink that is really hard to read on that galvanized bottom plate.

Got this for $15 this morning. The tool rest is broken off on the right side, so I'll have to fab a replacement. Seems to be fine otherwise.

I have a block grinder that wants to vibrate itself to death, even with brand new wheels on it. Any fixing this thing?

1/4 horse 30 bucks....1 hour each way ride....

and a 397-19391 1/3 hp 25 bucks, 1 hour each way.

power difference? preferences?

which should i get? or both?

thanks for advice in advance

you want the "397" model # prefix.

while the other one may be a nice grinder, the "397" is a true "block" grinder.

Whats a good price for the 1/2 hp grinder pictured above in used condition? It is not pretty, but not abused either. Asking $50, seems like $25 or $30 would be more of a steal.

I have bought (3) 1/2HP block grinders, all in excellent shape, one without a light, one with a light, one with a light and a stand and a coolant cup. I paid $50 for each one and consider them all good deals.

Picked up this guy at the local flea market today for $15. Though he's rough around the edges he's got good bones. Also has the brake on the right side of the switch which does work. Is this common on these? Quite and smooth as silk when you power it up. The light even works. Anyone have any good tips on how to clean the glass? I'm guess a brand new razor blade will help me on the way to see through to the other side .

I'm not sure what I want to do with this guy. It's pretty much all complete so I may tear it down and restore it, or leave it as is. I have another one at the shop already. I will probably leave this one in the garage at home.

Thanks for posting the Label file, and your warning about using Word 2010 is necessary. I unfortunately have word 2007 and upon opening the file the font was transformed from whatever you used to "Arial Rounded MT Bold", which made the label look a very weird. Changing the font to "AcmeFont" greatly improved it's looks in Word 2007.

My 1/2 HP Grinder, it's brand new.....just has minor scuffs from moving it. Even came with the original mounting hardware.

Measurements of the bushings would be helpful :)

Just finished this one in time for it's birthday, it makes 50 this month. Dated June 28th, 1963. I finished it in black and gold hammertone with coarse and fine wire wheels, still need to get the visors, lamp and switch(this one was basic plug in with no power switch).

Thanks fflinstone!

You should have asked Golfer, I have a reference pic of the wiring on the one like that I restored a couple pages back.

What's up with the "brake" I read about? Is it mechanical or electrical, how does it work?

The one I got a few weeks back had it. First time I've ever seen a block grinder with one. I've owned about four in my time and my pop has had about the same amount and he has never seen one with a brake either. I haven't popped it open since I got it, but I'm going to say it's mechanical. It does slow it down considerably when you engage even for a split second.

I'm sure some of the experts can chime in as to exactly what happens when you push the brake lever. It's definitely a cool added feature.

I HAD one but it did not function.
I will go out on a limb and say it is not mechanical. I would ASSuME it just reverses polarity momentarily but WTFDIK.

I still need to work on the quenching tray but it's getting there
Nice job man. I don't know anything about bench grinders but I just acquired one from a friend who gave it to me as payment for money he owed me. I'm in the process of restoring it now. I'm using the same hammered paint as u. Ill post pics of it when it's finished

With all the block grinders showing up on here I was wondering if someone might have some spare parts. I have a 1/2 h.p. and I think I need a motor relay, the little black box. Thanks for the help in advance.

I've done it again!

Dragged home another Block Grinder - 1/2 HP Model 397.19591.

But it isn't for myself, really. Another CM Block Grinder restorer used my label and is looking for a cooling tray and lamp shade.

So, I'm going to use the right wheel cover for the missing one on a 1/2 HP grinder I have.

I'm considering parting out this guy, but it is special. Have a look.

It is missing a left hand spark arrester, I have a spare. The boss for securing the bottom plate is broken, J-B Weld should take care of that. Otherwise a nice example at a good, but firm $30.00.

Here's why it's special to me - a schematic that shows 115V or 230V wiring.

Here are some detail pics. for reference. I have seen a post or two asking how a certain model is wired. This model uses a relay and a start capacitor. The models I've opened have one or the other, but this is the first I have seen with both. I don't plan on splitting open the case, but I suspect the relay takes the place of the start switch on the Model 115.7566 pre-Block Grinder I have. I think I'm talking myself out of parting this out. Quick - someone make me an offer.

It has 2 good 'rubber' feet, that allowed me to make a drawing for reference. If some one comes up with good replacements, please let us know.

OK, I like to negotiate when I am buying/selling. I set my sale price with a little 'wiggle room'. So when the seller held to his $30 price, I was surprised and a little disappointed, but he was correct - the price was good and fair. It also included a stand made of bent thin walled pipe.

If it's up for grabs, let me know please! I would be happy to buy/trade for it, even missing the guard and lamp.
