The old clunker just followed me home. No keys, but the front door panels seem to wok well and there doesn't seem to be much rust. I'm thinking it's from about 1949 or 1950. Should clean up fairly nice.

Maybe one of these model/p/ns?
65039, 65034, 65141, 65212, 65228, 6500, or 6520?

Thanks, will appreciate the help, happy trails!

I have looked at thousands of boxes, cant seem to find one that has these locks. hope some one can help me out in the near future. till then I will fill her up.

I really want to say that is a kennedy or kennedy made for someone else box. They have a pretty specific style of drawer slide and retainer clip which your box has.

Nice job on the repaint BTW.

Bottom done, wife just had to get in the pic, told her not to cover up my boxes but she wouldn't lay down:mad:

Good looking bottom. The box came out nice as well. :lol_hitti

I'm thinking 60's with the center pull drawer handles.

zkling, Thanks 4 the compliment & id guess, appreciate it. I was pleasantly surprised about the great color match from a Walmart spray can. It was a good match for just touching up the non original black spray paint on the front. Worked out nice. Happy Trails!

nine4gmc, thanks, I should get it back from locksmith tomorrow & I'll post pics after I get it all back together. Ive cleaned, de-rusted w/Naval Jelly Rust Dissolver($5), washed the carpet drawer liners, repainted the front, banged out dents, greased the slides & tweated it here & there. And yeah, isn't that a cool "streamlined" bottom cab.?!! Ha, ha!

Not sure on model number, but it should be stamped in the top compartment, left hand side, towards the front. I am pretty sure it is from the late 70's to mid 80's. Based on the Red/Black color and the drawer pull style.

I just received this one from my grandmother today. It's one of my pawpaw's old boxes. Always fun to get new tools, even cooler when they come in an old box like this, and even cooler that they were well used by my pawpaw.

Was hoping someone could give me an approximate date of the box. I'm figuring from the 50's or 60's. I'm sure one of you guys has a much more educated guess than mine.

Thanks
(Sorry for the quality, cell phone pics, best I could do at the time)

The bottom probably is late 40's as you guess. the top could be from then till the early 60's. that is the stereotypical Kennedy 520 style machinist box, (whether it was made by K or not... I have a Waterloo with the same drawer pulls and W had a contract with sears for years....)

From your pics, it looks the same as Craftsman's #6520 box. I would say the late 50's to early 60's is in the ballpark. Since it has the plastic(ish) handle, I would put it more into the early 60's. If it was made by the same manufacturer.

Edit : That would make it a Crown Top cousin.

Thanks, same mnf. being Kennedy? 6520, eeh! Cool! Seems to me I read in forums that I believe there were model no.'s on CM tools until late '60s or '70ish? So, maybe all I'll find in a date code if I'm lucky?

What confuses you per your emotion-con? The drawers are charcoal in color not black, I believe that's a clue too to circa. The rectangular Sears CM badge goes from when? '59-early/mid '80s?

Dave,
I posted the :headscrat because I didn't follow your posts. I didn't compliment you on your repaint. I didn't realize you repainted your 12D craftsman box. I was talking about justridin's repaint of his mystery, possible kennedy boxes. I think you thanked me for a compliment that I didn't give out to you. :dunno:

Anyway.... I am pretty sure it is from the late 70's to mid 80's based on the following

-The 50-early 60's the boxes had welded on drawer pulls, not full length. Color was grey.

-60's to early 70's the boxes were grey chassis with red drawers and full length drawer pulls

-Late 70's to mid 80's the boxes changed to red chassis with black / charcoal drawers. Full length drawer pulls positioned mid height.

-Late 80's into the 90's and even what we have today, craftsman went to a top full length drawer pull style, red frame and black / charcoal drawers. The earlier drawers were lighter than the more black later drawers.

It should be stamped on the "floor" of the top compartment. Left hand side, inside the long rectangle divider that goes front to back towards the front of the box. You may have to scrape some paint and or rust off of it, but it should be stamped.

Example.

Sorry Dave, I was responding to Drew's cel phone pics of his Blackhawk carry box.

I do like the box you posted, but I don't have any info to add about it.

That style handle was used on later crown tops, early ones had metal handles, mid 60'sish had plastic handles that went to the inside of the swivle tabs, later ones had a plastic handle that went to the outside of the swivel tabs.

Bluebolt - I knew about the metal handles, but wasn't aware of the inside/outside difference with the plastic handles. Thanks.

Thedrewdude - If your box was made by the same mftr as the Craftsman 6520, that would date your box after the mid-60's.

Not 100 percent sure if this qualifies as a tool box but I store all my nuts, bolts , washers ,nails , screws and so on in it, it is a instrumental box in my garage.

It was posted in 1933, but I just found another add for 9.13 That's the same cabinet posted in 1915. I strongly suggest doing the refurb! Its the perfect bolt bin/small parts .
I got mine about 15 years ago in the shape its in and love it.
Let's see a picture of yours?

Dave, why are you hellbent on finding the model number of all your boxes? :dunno: Outside of Snap on and possibly Mac / Matco. The model number of older boxes is A.) Really hard to determine B.) Not well documented C.) Really useless.

As for the clips. Waterloo is the cheapest game in town to order them from.

Do you plan on keeping all those boxes or are you going to sell them?

Nice box, can't wait to see it after a bath!!

Ok, I started cleaning it a little

picture.php

The top at least was made by Chicago advertising metal

picture.php

The top is Hammer tone silver, while the bottom is the wrinkle type machinery grey. I do notice that the later Kennedy style boxes have the little rectangular handles instead of the round pulls like this one. It's still a little rough, especially on the top left corner of the top box, but, it will sure work and now I would like to find the matching grey top mechanic's box :lol_hitti

just an update on the kennedy boxes I posted a few days ago, I emailed Kennedy and told them I was sure that I had just purchased some kennedy boxes and was hoping they may help me out with a vintage, after several emails and pictures they confirmed the boxes were Kennedy and they even sent me a 1954 flyer for them!
great customer service over there with the kennedy crew!
hopefully this will help the next guy

(Pumps arm), sweet I was right on the manufacture :rocker: If it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't have had the knowledge to ID them properly

That is really cool Kennedy sent you a catalog on them. You don't see many older kennedy boxes besides the standard machinist chests. I bet those cost a very pretty penny back in there day. The modern equivalent 5 drawer costs ~$500 today. :shocking:

EDIT, just out of curiosity I ran those prices through an inflation calculator

1954 $62 --> $537 2013
1954 $72--> $623.50 2013

Not too far off from today's prices.

Kennedy was awesome about the research, they actually seemed excited to respond , I was getting an update on their progress every 15 minutes or so till they found it. Great people over there !
The calculations you made are cool also, I think they were well worth my small investment advice
