The look I'm going for is vintage industrial automobilia. The plan for the office is '50s with most everything in there at least 40 yrs old. The shop area will Texaco, NAPA, pawn shop, automobila and your everyday shop stuff.
Walls will be Sheetrock, old corrugated tin, pegboard, warehouse siding.

Thanks for stopping by.

LIKEIN THAT

BTW so I assume the wifey wasn't hurt by the falling timber?

I think this will be one awesome place, I can't wait to see how things pan out for you! I'll be subscribing so I don't miss any of the action. Side question, what do you do for a living?

Thanks for stopping by. Awesome, probably not. With all the great garages on GJ, I'll be happy if I can have a useable shop the has a little style.
As for as what I do, I work for DOT, Eng. Tech. Supervisor. The shed hopefully will be a successful second attempt at something I'll be proud of.

Here are better pictures of my first shop. My attempt of a 1940's Texaco themed garage.

Here is a Texaco like the one my family had for 5 years and I was the island jockey. Ours had a canopy over a single 3 pump island. I've used and thrown away more oil cans, etc that you can imagine. :( We were the TBA sales also so I delivered all the belts, hoses, oil, chemicals, etc to the other stations.

I do have some stuff still packed in some of those Havoline boxes. Since its been 35 years, do I still need what's in the boxes? :lol_hitti

Edit: Since this restored station was in my wife's tiny hometown in WVA, it must have been fate.

Since the preliminary construction is done, time for some paint. As an early fan of Horsepower TV, I always liked the two-tone grey and used it in the first shop. This time I got a little closer to complete since I started the red stripe. Yes, I'm A.D.D. like others.

While on the subject of paint, here's photo's of the office. New ceiling, paint on walls and floor and some cabinets I found at a yard sale. These are uppers that will be used to store books and magazines. The office is only 7 1/2 feet wide and will have a counter on the right side.
The blue squares are proposed windows. One day maybe.

There was a 16' residential garage door on the back side of the building. Great for letting a great breeze in but limited the wall space so...

First attempt to put up the panels was to use scaffolding. Nope!!! I didn't want to just fill the hole so I ordered full length panels. Since this was a one man job, filling the hole would have been easier and cheaper but it is done right now.

I rented the man lift and made a panel clamp out of 2x4's and an I-bolt. One panel off, one new panel on. Repeat. Worked like a charm. Finish in a day. :rocker:

I had three piles of 24' long floor joist taking up a bunch of space. I put them on CL but no bites. This and other stuff showed that I was running out of space so without finishing other started projects like painting, I decided to use some of the joist to extend my attic space above office. On the bright side, it would make painting the big wall easier.

Here's what parks in the shed and two that I would love to park in the shed. Anybody have a winning lotto ticket they don't need. :lol_hitti

The bike is my Honda Valkyrie Interstate. A couple of friends and I rode from Rapid City/Sturgis to Yellowstone and back a few years ago. Awesome trip, beautiful country. Definitely a bucket list item.

p.s. yes black is faster.

Awesome build Shorty! You've certainly come a long way and your job security is ensured for the foreseeable future. Thanks also for answering my question about the self-tapping screws. I certainly appreciate it.

I've had some short term, (hopefully) health problems so my progress has been slowed down. I hope to start on my walls sometime this month.

Well, time to bring the project closer to where things are today.

I'm left with two piles of joist sooo....time to build up again. I decided to have a lower loft area against the back wall that would be more for temp project storage. This would also give me a lower ceiling over the proposed woodworking area to hang lighting and outlets.

For the decking, I found 3/4 T&G for a little more than the OSB used on the front loft. Sure makes for a lot better floor.

Free Tip of the Day: secure the decking to the material lift while lifting unless you like remodeling your tool box.

With the loft finished, I had this small space in the corner the I thought would be great for sheet goods. With a project I saw in Family Handyman, I built this. The area by the door holds 2x2 sheets on top, 2x4 on bottom and the left side holds full 4x8 sheets.

The blue thing is my shelving unit for holding hardware. It still has a piece of filler foam and shrink wrap from when it was stored (for 3 years )

The space between the joist are used for storing stock 5 to 12 ft long. I mark the length on the end of each piece with a Sharpie. Above the sheet storage, the joist store the under 4ft stock.

Next on the list was to frame up the back wall and install some pegboard. Wainscoting is the old upper panel I replaced with the full length in post #50

The work bench started out as a 5 ft by 12 ft photographic layout table from the 60' or 70's. When I first saw this table 10 plus years ago, I thought baby puke green. I saved it from from the dumpster recently and repurposed it. Now I have a beautiful Olsen green bench and I didn't even have to paint it.

Wow what a great place, so much much potential. The loft over shop idea was exactly what I dreamt of in my early 20's! Would have been awesome. Nice of the PO to throw in the appliances/equipment, have you had a chance to do any spot welding with the microwave? (; cheers!

Its great finally getting things in their final spot and having tools somewhat accessible. With plenty of vertical storage, I still have a lot to get placed or gotten rid of. There is still one stack of joist against the wall that is taking up way to much space.

What to do with the last stack of joist? Started to disassemble but gave up after wrestling with one tie plate.

What to do? What to do? :dunno: Bet they would make for a great loft extension.

Since I had seven 21' and three 24' joist, I came up with more loft area and a bridge between the two. Sweet. The material lift was perfect for lifting and setting the joist. It was a great feeling to have the floor space finally freed up and the unplanned bridge is a bonus.

I was going to buy new tin and age it chemically. When I went to get some j-channel for the tin, then had a pile of used corrugated tin so time for a little decor enhancement. I used the degreaser in the purple bottle to age the j-channel. It is corrosive like the Lysol cleaner and worked like a charm. No rust but it looks old and used.

Like that cm tin and traffic light. You're getting a lot done, building those lofts and bridge between them was a good idea. Good work!!!!

Not much progress on the shop. Have to make the Mrs. happy. She wants a deck and I want a decent place to grill.
I decided to pre-fab at the shop and a nice flat floor made it a lot nicer. I made a jig to make placing the hangers easier.

Also brought some goodies. Thank you GJ for showing me things I didn't know I needed. It can be expensive being a member. :D My Lista cabinet didn't come with dividers so.....eBay purchases, some dividers and some plastic bins.

GJ strikes again. I was able to pick up two Wilton vises, two Baldor bench grinders and a couple of tool cabinets. All things I didn't know about until reading this site. I'm just glad I had gas money to get home.

Even though I wasn't sure I was going to like the style of your rebuild, I definitely liked the way way you're renovating this. But that last pic has peaked my interest. Either way I've subbed to this.

Thanks for stopping in Xtremek. I'm kind of in the same boat as you, redoing someone else project. I need to get back to finishing the actual garage, paint, flooring, office and decor.

Thanks for stopping by Shopnut. As you well know, the one man operation especially working off ground, doesn't always go as planned. Now that I'm partially through your build, my project list has grown. Go figure.

That is common when you read Shopnuts threads I really enjoyed his city garage thread also cause I could relate to it more being I have a 2 car garage. A place like the Asylum is a pipe dream for me but I always inspired by it.

I'd say your garage is on par with Shopnot. Clean, organized and useful so I think the dream is somewhat reality. I strive to have a garage like both of ya'll.

One suggestion for you if you can swing it. You might consider buying a manlift for all your "high altitude" work. I had a rolling scaffold rig with for a number of years and it was okay. But my productivity (and safety) probably doubled once I got the lift. I paid $600 for mine and could sell it for at least that (but I never will!).

Not much to report. I did a little cleaning and threw together a dolly for the tall Lista cabinet. Hopefully by tomorrow night the MaxJax will be operational.
