YOU VISE PEOPLE!

I was perfectly happy standing there, enjoying the view. Then one of you (OK, probably more than one) sneaked up behind me and pushed me when I least expected it. Down a slope. Down a very, very, very slippery slope.

I won't name names. You know who you are. :drink:

Morgan 288 1/2. Local CL score.

Nice vise ! It looks like the Parker with the same model number. I think I also saw a Reed just like it with the same model number.

revamp, I like the color but it looks like a blue/green in the picture, could be the lighting.

Nice revamp, Revamp! Haven't seen that color before, that's a nice one. Congrats on finishing your first vise, trust me when I say it's just the start ;)

Thanks guys, but at 40 some pounds this vise is already 1/3 of my body weight. I have no interest (or need) to own anything larger or heavier than this one (unless one of you gentlemen are willing to tote it for me!).

:Help:

I'll have to see if I can get a better picture of the color on the vise.

Still need to clear some bench space for "The Vice" , not sure what will be worse, lifting 240lb or unscrewing that massive screw all the way out half a turn at a time to split the vice in two?

I'm banking the former will be on the "never again" list. :D Might be time to invest in one of these. :D

Small can be just as tempting. :D Nice work on that vice. :) Size wise, that should cover pretty much all you're likely to do in general. Quite a few of us probably hover around the 4" to 5" mark on our main, everyday vice(s).

CW: there's no turning back as far as buying vises and all i can offer as advice is start putting aside the ones you really like so you can sell or trade the others to get some more that you like. Slippery slope or not it's a fun ride and not too many things better than having a huge vise or two in the back of your car for an hour or two ride home.

Fretters: i'm sorry i didn't acknowledge your new addition to your shed. also sorry your back is sore today. when are you going to learn to take those monsters apart before moving them? some are a PIA i admit and maybe the quick release or English ones might be damn near impossible, but unless you start hanging on an inversion table like i do you might end up at a Dr's office or Chriopractor more often than you like. just curious is that the biggest vise you've owned and is there a bigger one on your radar now?

Revamp: it's a pretty common vise, but your Craftsman is a keeper. nice job on the restore and don't end the search for a bigger one because i'm sure that there is a strong back near you to help carry it home and mount it on your bench. or take it apart like i just mentioned to Fretters and your 80-100 pound vise becomes manageable. welcome to our group and good to have another female to keep some of these guys on their best behavior.

The English quick release ones it all comes down to getting the screws out of the bracket on the front, if you can do that then you can operate it and pull the screw out with the quick release parts, and then you can pull the dynamic out. I haven't got one that was too heavy yet so I haven't needed to take one apart to move it.

Fresh, just drop off by the UPS truck. It needs a new pair of jaws but in good shape over all. little broken of pieces where the jaw sits but I think I can filled that with some tig welding filler. (wounder if there is a better way to fill the broken off pieces). I was surprised the wrenches were there after all those years.

The Record 114 is 80 odd lb and isn't that heavy tbh, I walk around at work with two bags of cement all the time and that's 120lb, there is not many heavier than that round here, I live in a very non industrial area so any large and heavy tools are quite rare. The samsonia No38 was a good find for here, but Fretters 8a is double the weight nearly, I would buy them that big if I could find them.

Come to think of it the only one I'd consider splitting due to weight isn't a quick release :( I bet you'd travel for a really big vice at the right price ;)

One of the problems with lifting the 48 is finding a decent place to get hold of it, it's quite curvy and if you grab it low down it gets a bit unstable when lifting it.

If only 1 week sooner.........

I think I mentioned I was going to make a couple sizes.

There is several types of filler rod you can use, I like Eutectic's TIG rod choices or if Inconel sticks then that would work also. Gonna make the jaws your self? If so I could give you a couple pointers. PM me if you have questions, That vise is worth fixing.

It is a number 3, I dont think it weight 300lbs, It feel like around 175lbs i pick it up by myself with no problem I try to take it apart but i think is design to come apart from the handle side. I am not sure. But it is a monster, i love it. very good shape over all.

If yours is the # 3, looks like it is 162 lbs according to this ad (top left corner of ad)

I've used Aluminium Bronze rod which worked quite well, obviously it's not a colour match for cast iron so not a good idea for bare metal areas.

Anyone in Tulsa / OKC?

A friend sent me this link and said, "Hey, it says Wilton vise..."

http://tulsa.craigslist.org/for/4921159395.html

I clicked through the photos and didn't see anything but it does say, "160 pound Wilton vice, $350".

I browse the photos again and spot something. There it is right there. Do you see it?

I emailed the guy asking for more photos. He sent me this.

Looks like a 600 in good shape. It isn't a great price, but it is a rare-ish Wilton if someone in the area wants to try to make a deal on it. It's too far for me.

And if you want to do a twofer you could hit this as well:

AC or DC? I have used Silicon Bronze but never tried it on Cast Steel. What is the supplier of the Alum Bronze rod you mentioned.

I use AC, I did repairs to the last Record 36 I cleaned up (this is a cast steel vice) and it worked well. You can get some rubbish come out of the casting that you may have to stop and grind out but you can get that with welding it as well.

I'm in the UK and about the only Alum Bronze we see over here is http://www.spawelding.co.uk/brazing-wire/994-sifalbronze-no-32-24mm-25kg.html

I think it was one of Jody's youtube videos that I first saw it used on cast iron.

EDIT: Just to add this page of his gives a bit more detail on why he uses AC http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/tig-welding-cast-iron-409.html

Just wondering how many of us vise junkies are in the ownership club of 50+ vises in our possession.

I have shifted gears slightly and only buy smaller ones. I would like a 200 -300 lb vise, but they are a bit much to collect.

I try and keep that many, give or take a few from time to time. I probably only have 12 or 15 I won't sell for one reason or another. Mostly because of who they belong to at one time or they are just too cOOl in my mind. Or a few I have a "vision" as to how I plan to do them up but lack the time. But many are just flippers

It is almost like selling a gun. I don't do that anymore. Had a beautiful Ruger M77V with laminated stock, bull barrel. Wish I never sold it. Had a 68 Charger R/T, wished I never sold it.

No kidding, I wouldn't even bother contacting him. Go check this one out. Check it over for cracks or other issues. Looks like it was on some type of adjustable stand.

https://billings.craigslist.org/tls/4911944060.html

New to the garage - 1st old vise to me. Damn thing is some kind of big - have no idea on weight - going to have to pull the bottom off anyway for a good clean. Saw no cracks, no apparent issues. So, I'm standing there and ask him if the leg vises were for sale and they were. Total bill for the day - $250. He knocked down about 10% and I paid him cash. Good dude and might have found a new occasional fishing bud.

zkling - thanks for the heads up. I'm now poorer 'cause you steered me this way.

Define "vise"; Just bench vises? Do clamp ons count? how about hand vises? Wood working vises? what about work mates? Those are vises, right? Drill press vises? Mill vises?...

Some here are into three figures... :ninja:

I looked for cracks, welds, and bent handle; but failed to find any.

However, the old guy has seen it's share of work. The handle and lead screw are well worn.

So, I need to media blast a grinder stand tomorrow. I'm leaning towards putting this guy in as well.

I don't have a clue what color I'll paint it.

Thanks for looking.

I keep both on hand, both are Harris rods designed for TIG, which have a different composition than their gas rods. I always run the Si rod on DC and usually run the Al rod on AC. There are a few different alloy compositions of the Aluminum bronze rod, off the top of my head #2 is the one to use for buildup and joining. There is a company out of Michigan or Wisconsion that specializes in copper based fillers for the MIG and TIG world that had a good rundown sheet on them. :headscrat:

OK, This is the Vise
3" wide jaws and opens 6"
number on the side is 10104 300

Made in Schiller Park IL

What do you think?

I think you need to pull the dynamic jaw out, flip it over and tell us what the date is on the key! Also if it says GUAR EXP. I'm thinking it's a 1960's or early 1970's vise. Model number changed throughout the years, it was probably sold as a 9300. Nice looking vise.

Wow! I'm a piker compared to most of you, but if you loosen the definition that much, I'm about 3/4 of the way to 3 figures!:eyecrazy:
