Re: Show us your cool, "old" drill press

I like it!
Is that a floor or bench DP? Are you just using brass washer bushings with a slide on pulley?

Can you post some pics with everything in view?

Yes, bench top DP. Oil Impregnated Bronze bushings with a shoulder pressed into the 4 step sheave. I will try and get a good shot of it tomorrow. A few posts back I do have some photos of it before the modification.

A new toy. I currently have a Delta ChiCom 1/3hp 12" bench top drill press that is a good little machine, but has no personality and just doesn't make me smile. So I started watching CL for something with a little more personality.

I saw this old Premium Penncraft (a re-branded Delta Homecraft 11-100) with a 3/4hp replacement motor listed for $50. It was a long drive to get it, but after looking at it for a couple of weeks, I decided that I needed to get it even though I didn't "need" it. You all know the feeling.

So here it is. Paint and labels are in great shape, so I'm not touching that. It runs smooth and quiet with minimal runout. I'm just going to shine up the rusty bits and call this one done. Except that I might do a speed reduction jack shaft setup since I have a 3/4hp motor.

It's so ugly, it's pretty. Only one ding in the table.

Next to it's chinese cousin. The Penncraft will also be sunk into the top of the new bench that you can see being built just to the right.

A P868 serial number. August 1968 feels about right, but I can't confirm.

Here is a close up of something you just don't see every day.

By the way, I did not like the handle setup on the Penncraft when I saw it. Just a bar running through through the spindle gear. My Delta has the 3 handle configuration, which I thought was better. Wrong. I can easily operate the Penncraft with one hand, and with the Delta, I was always having to reach over with my left hand even with the limited spindle travel. So, it turns out that I like the old-school cheap-o set up better. Who knew. Oh, and the spindle lock is a nice upgrade as well. I do have to forego the laser pointers on the Delta (which I used once :) ).

Edit: Had an old lamp laying around that fit really nicely. Almost like it was made for the drill press.

Nice work, Earth... Can't see from the photos, is there mechanical retention of the assembly or are the belts holding the whole thing in position?

Spent a couple of hours cleaning up some rusty pieces, oiling, and greasing. It shined up nicely and is smooth and solid machine.

Now the ding in table really shows up! But it doesn't hurt a thing. ;)

Looks really good - nice old machine - unique - have never seen the "Penny Drill Press" - like the work light - what year was it made?

Good Job:thumbup:

Thanks T. The serial number is P868. I can't find any info in JCP serial numbers. The machine was made by Delta and is part of their Homecraft line. Going through vintagemachinery.org, I see that the "beehive" belt guard come into existence in the late 50's and then went to a more square box as a Rockwell in the early '70's. So, I'm guessing 1960's and maybe even 1968 if that is what the serial number is trying to tell us. The work light is just some old desk lamp, but it's the same style and I think it looks good too.

I hauled this 1,000 pound plus drill home last month. I will restore it and use in my Wood working and Blacksmith shop. The guy I bought it from said it belonged to his grandfather who used it a lot. It is in working condition I will change out the 3hp three phase motor with a 220 motor.I would like any input or information someone might have by seeing this press. It says Aurora Tool Company Indiana on it.I also got a good selection of drill bits with it and a Jacobs Chuck 0-1/2 inch.

Just completed the multispeed modification on the Craftsman Drill Press. I now have a low speed of 244rpm.

Nice work! That looks classy.

Did you find that the shaft and the bushings had adequate clearance? I tried that once and they were too snug of a fit.

Now that is a drill press! They were around the turn of the century (19th to 20th) for making large radial and non drill presses.

The finish line is in site on my Craftsman 150 refresh. Still need to wait until the motor's fresh paint cures, then reassemble, wire a switch and add belts.

Shout out to JZiggy for the speed reducing center pulley!

Before (horrible pics I know)

Wow, thanks for the shout out! My little pulley is not worthy to be on a gorgeous machine like that. Very nice job!

Thanks!

I went with Rustoelum's hammered black. The original color was black but not an exact match.

Just waiting on Amazon to deliver belts and a switch! I'm really happy how the paint on the motor came out even though it isn't a perfect match to original.

Hello Gents,
I just picked up a Rockwell Delta Model 34-580 Bench top drill press. The quill return spring does not work and I think it is missing parts. Can one of you help me understand how it works and what I am missing to complete it?

Re: Canadian 15 Drill Press by Canadian Blower & Forge Co. Ltd., Kitchener, Ont.

I have in my possession a Canadian 15 Drill Press by Canadian Blower & Forge Co. Ltd., Kitchener, Ont., floor model,

That looks like a Buffalo 15 drill press. I believe canadian blower and forge was the northern subsidiary of Buffalo blower and forge. The vintage machinery website has lots of good info, its where I when for info on my Buffalo 18.

S4,

That press look fantastic! Better than when it was new. I think you need to flip over the pulley on the motor to get the full range of speeds. Great job!

Hi. Nice find.
There is a recessed screw that preloads the spring it might have backed off. It should be on the bottom right behind the spring holder on the left side.

I don't have any better pictures of it yet but you can see it in this picture. It is an old OSU M.E. class project drill press. I'm not sure of the year but it was probably built in the 50's early 60's. I have had it since about 1988 or so. I didn't take a picture of it directly but it was cast in the OSU foundry and built by the class. I'll take a better picture when I get home.

Picked this DP up about a year ago. Delta DP-600 17inch from the early 50's. Probably a little more drill press than I need, but the price was right and it kicks a**. Id like to get the foot feed system for it, but I haven't seen one for sale under $275. It has the production table, without a single oops hole. The motor is not original, but it has a nice 1 3/4 Baldor.I don't regret this purchase at all.

Very nice press! My DP-600 is around 1941, and doesn't have the Morse taper spindle. Seeing yours is giving me the urge to locate one.

There is one for sale on CL in Detroit. I noticed your in the Midwest. The guy wants too much for it, but the barter is half the fun.

DWK, That drill press will clean up nice and make a GREAT press. Very nice production table. :rocker:
Here is one with a foot feed that I cleaned up recently. Added production table from later press for the keyed slots. Very pleased with outcome.

Good luck finding just the foot feed, there hard to come by and $$$ (as you found out)
Looking forward to "After" pics.

:+1: Once I find a good deal on a nice 20" gear head, mine's probably going. It's a good woodworking drill press though.

I found this drill Craftsman drill press yesterday on CL and jumped all over it. Its a model 103 23131 bench model with a Vary-Slo and a perfect tilt table, it also came with an almost complete set of fractional drills and an aluminum table extension. The Vary-Slo works but is missing the little button that holds the speed position but I will be able to make another one based on another system that I have, I also have the big brother to this drill press model 103 23141 floor model so it will be in good company.
