K: with the covers for the wheels, metal framed eye shields and other parts it's definitely worth picking up for that price and maybe even worth it to have him ship it to you since your last post mentions you need some parts for yours. can you post pictures of yours so maybe one of the Blockheads that has a parts grinder might be able to help you. or make the grinder you have a wire wheeler and find another block for stones.

good luck

How do you guys clean the eye shields with the metal frames? I would like to sandblast mine but I haven't looked if the plexiglass separates from the frame.
The frames have "metal tabs " that holds the glass. If you are not careful when you go to bend them back in place the tabs break, then you will have to silicone the glass in place.

1/2HP in Fort Wayne for $20. Doesn't run, but might be an easy fix

That's funny!

I was just going to post this one because of your previous post.

See this thread for more information on what you and I thought would be an 'easy fix.' :lol_hitti

My 1/2HP is a 397.19590 with 7" wheels. Practically every 1/2HP I find is significantly different and is a 6" wheel version. I always get the oddballs. :D I have found a couple 1/2HP ones like mine on shoppok.com but I can never get a response from the sellers. There's one in particular that would be a perfect purchase as it's nearly a parts grinder anyway. http://www.shoppok.com/reading/cl/a...der-classic-still-works----40--pottstown-.htm If I could only get a word back from the seller. I can't complain too much though, I paid $40 for my 1/2HP a few years back and it was only missing the one wheel cover. I'll find one eventually, I have a post in the WTB forum for parts: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=310346

I noticed this flat area with a slot on my newest block. I'm assuming this is for mounting a attachment. Anyone have this on theirs?

This is one sweet grinder, I let it run on top of this box, no rubber feet, and it didn't move at all. Spin down must take well over a minute.

CB: just guessing that it might be a slot cut to hold maybe a drill or knife sharpening extension? it does look like it was cut at the factory though.

Both of these I have, which are probably the same model as yours have that slot on the right side. I'm not sure what attachment they are made for though.

DOC: i do like that design for keeping the **** from hitting the walls and going into the room's air so much. i was thinking of designing one out of wood, but now hoping to find one like that made out of steel. i'm guessing that was 3 phase. would love to see one of the blockheads line up their family with all the different wheels. i think you have 3 in a row and somebody (sorry forgot his name because he hasn't posted in a while) had 4 mounted on two rolling tool boxes.

how do you like your set up and can you post pictures of it again?

Mike: You got a free grinder because the stand is worth more than what you paid for it.

Doc: Yep that's it. Do you still have them set up like that.

All: Brent has the blocks on his roller toolboxes. Anybody see him on other parts of GJ?

Not exactly the same, but I keep the soft plastic window on my MGB convertible top clean and pliable with Meguiar's A1216 Cleaner Wax - Liquid.

I also use it on the Block plastic eye shields.

On my second 1/3hp 6" Block grinder, I'm doing a quick cleanup and minor upgrades. Have other old iron in que to restore/rebuild right now. One modification is upgrading the light socket to a switched one. I ordered one off of Ebay for about $5.

I'm rewiring the two wires for the light inside. Hot wire (light socket center) is being piggybacked to the black (line) wire at the base on/off grinder switch. Other nuetral wire from the light is going to the nuetral white wire on the Brake circuit board.

My question: I have one of those brass piggyback connectors that I got off the switch. However I need a second one.

Without buying a lot off ebay, did/does someone here have just one they can spare/sell? Thank you.

I'm happy to report I just joined the CM block grinder club, I picked up my first this morning, it's a 1/3 hp model and is complete with guards and water tray. I now understand the attraction!

Dogz: looks like you found one with all it's cool parts to it so best of luck with it. also welcome to the blockheads. just ask if you have any issues or questions about your new block and whether you do a light or full spiffing up the guys here can help if you need some (usually).

Doc: thanks for starting that thread because i know that information is in this thread, but this thread is getting so big it's hard to find the posts quickly now if you don't have an idea of the date when it was posted. hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving.

At beginning of Fall I had seven block grinders but I felt guilty seeing all these beautiful machines just sitting around, so slowly I started to sell them off and whenever someone bought one they all had similar comments, "this thing will last me a long time." I had sold them all and kept a couple of Baldor grinders but I missed seeing a Craftsman on my bench, so this morning I picked this up for $50 from a friendly elderly woman. I had every intention of trying to get it down to $40 but she told me it belonged to her husband who had passed and she just sold her house to move on in life and I just didn't have the heart to haggle with her and gladly I handed over the $50. The eyeshields were already mine that I put on and overall it is in terrific shape and runs smooth, of course.

Pupuhd: you got it.

The 1/3hp flat top I picked up a week or so ago got new sealed bearings tonight. The shim rotor alignment method worked easily for this one too.

Hey CBAcres-
This looks like a crack forming to me. You might want to do a ring test on that wheel.

Dngr: i don't see the crack but i do see where a prior user maybe tried to use the side of the stone to grind something. if there is a crack you see can you see it if you save the picture and blow it up like Outlaw does or are your eyes good enough to see it in the picture as you posted it? like Doc and others do CB and all of us should change the 60 year old stones even if they don't have any wear and find another use for them. not sure what you could use an old stone for, but having one explode on you isn't worth the $10 you saved.

I do see it in the area he circled. That is amazing that he spotted a potential hairline crack.

TX: good eyes. i'm using big fonts with 250 readers and probably due for another eye exam and some new glasses now that i'm turning 60 in a couple months. like i mentioned we should probably all change out the original stones unless they look great and pass the ring test.

ALL: anybody have or know of a possible use for old stones?

What are the preferred replacements? Norton?
They are considered one of the best and can be pricey.

'Enco has 7" wheels. Their house brand is Tru-Maxx, which are made by Saint-Gobain (who also make Norton). The Bond Grade and Structure in the Aluminum Oxide wheels are N8 and abrasive type 57. In the Silicon Carbide the Bond Grade and Structure is I8 with abrasive type 39C. While Enco doesn't specify the wheels do come with inserts. Set four up recently on my two Rockwell 7" and they run very nicely. Also two for my Rockwell 6". Don't forget a Desmond dresser or dressing stick if you prefer. Their silicon carbine dressing stick has a grit of 24. Some also like diamond point dressers.' - Isaiah6113.
