Buying tools like this (unless you are a dealer, have a store, and can hit multiple sales a day) won't make you a ton. What it will do - it help you build your tools :)

My goal is to cover the cost by selling 50% or so, and I keep, trade, or give away the rest. I only buy stuff if it fits in a flat rate envelope (unless it is something I will keep). CL is too much of a PITA. My favorite are buying lots or boxes when you know you can recoup on one or two items. Plus honestly, the hunt is all the fun!

I was buying stuff that I needed for my garage and some stuff to sell. I don't buy as much as some of the guys on here, but sometimes when I buy, I end up going on a spree. I do try to sell enough to make my next purchase.

Then my favorite of the day is the old rusty, crusty NB -None Better- New Brittan tool box. It's in rough condition and missing one latch but if I can get the art work remade for this I think it will be just bad A$$ ! Oh and inside the box was just a bunch of mixed old tools like Keystone hex sockets, Plomb , old Craftsman, and Williams sockets. Then a mix of old wrench's like Billings, Fairmount, Wakefield

Topop101:

I'm a fan of New Britain tools, but never saw a New Britain tool box.

Great find and thanks for documenting, as will keep an eye out for one.

Dngrmse, Can you post some detailed pics of the pliers from different angles?

See below; The jaws don't move. Only the crimper, which has two adjustments.

How do you guys afford to do this every weekend? I try to get in one day a week and every time i go out i spend almost $100 and my garage is so full right now i can barely walk in it. Do you guys sell most of the things you buy at these sales to recoup your cost every weekend?
^^^^------ This is one of the factors that led the my "retirement" from picking. I was spending every Saturday going to sales, every Sunday either listing stuff on E bay or tetris-ing it into my over packed garage, and every weekday evening boxing, and prepping for shipping. Even my super-supportive SWMBO was getting fed up.

Like others on here, I always looked for stuff that I could sell to cover the cost of the stuff I wanted to keep. It IS a bunch of fun finding bargains, and I still make excuses to go to the occasional sale, but my throttle position is a lot closer to idle than wide open.

That's quite the plier!!!

Just a guess, but it kind of looks like an old foreign fishing plier. (maybe Japanese???)

I don't post here much but I am pretty excited about my recent craigslist buy. About 60 wrenches in all for $50. Most are craftsman from the 60s with some others mixed in (including a new kobalt set... not sure how that got in there). I plan on selling some to recoup my money and keep the rest to upgrade my collection

Here is everything

This one is by O.I.T. made in India which I know nothing about but I think it's kind of neat.

Only hit 2 sales yesterday, not much going on this weekend.

1st one picked up a Sears USA square, drill box with various bits and a Duplex plastic drill bit stand and a General plane blade sharpener. Also picked up 3 Shreveport Steamer stadium cushions, a local 1970's World Football League team that only lasted one year.
$16 total

2nd sale only thing I found was a near new 10 x 20 silver tarp for $10. No picture use your imagination LOL.

For me, the time isn't an issue. I'm stuck at home twiddling my thumbs 24/7/357 (I demand 8 days to go up to camp once a year). My leash is short, so I need to keep travel time in mind for the sales that I can go to. I've missed some good sales because they were past my chain. I do this to get away from the house to get a little time for myself now and then. The tools are just a bonus.

As for the money, I'm a cheap *******. So most weekends I spend more in gas than I do at the sales, per item. I come from generations of hoarders, so selling is an issue. I keep telling myself that I should sell to get some money flowing the other way, but it hasn't happened yet.

It's more about the hunt than the acquisition. I just enjoy digging through other people's piles. I find it mindlessly relaxing.

topop - Some nice stuff in that haul.

Well, it was back to the sale from last week, and yesterday, again to see if they finally got the garage open. They did, but it wasn't filled with the promised tools though. It was mostly a catchall piled to the rafters. After I thawed my fingers out so I could move them, I was able to untangle an extension cord from the pile without knocking anything over. It was the only thing I came out of there with this time.

50' 12/3 SJ cable. He wanted $15, but I was able to talk him down to $10.

dngrmse,

Wow, VERY cool Crimpers! I'd find some sheet metal and try it out but pay attention and after crimping you have to go one way to get the metal back out if the crimp is very deep...

I'd say a crimp for a standing seam, but that seam better be higher that the guide jaw length, so probably for a specialty use and maybe in a factory. I'd guess those are turn of the (Last) century at least with the scroll work on it.

Well I'm about to go back out for try, 2... I went to one, and nothing, but I get in the van and turn the key, and nothing... no click, but the Battery appears good...

I got a wrench and banged on the starter housing and the solenoid a few times and Voila! it starts! So I came right home to verify it would starts again consistently, and it wasn't a fluke last gasp and it appears OK, but I'll go get a new starter anyway on this run...

Bodes ill for being so late...

Here's a better list and more pic's of the day's take.

Billings pocket driver. Pat date on this is Mar. 15 1887... a lil older than my 1960 catalog...:D
Stanley No. 136 3" sliding rule
Course sharping stone with wooden handle
8 & 10" crescents
Craftsman 1967 dated 3/8 ratchet and a crazy lighted socket... never seen this before . Not old GK series, just different..;)
Craftsman wrench set with rack! 50's logo :pimpflash
30's-40's 1/4" craftsman long"C"socket set...COMPLETE! It's cherry!:pimpflash
Small Iron bucket full of lead
Plumb Bob
Plumb 12 oz.ball peen hammer
2 Calipers/divider- one pair may have the mason logo on it... just cant make it out yet...:dunno:
A mix Craftsman V , Snap-on, and NB sockets in a Craftsman box with a plomb 1/2 pebble ratchet...a crazy mix but for 4 bucks I'll take it...lol
tiny Miller fall's screw driver
a good assortment of pins , punch's files and nail sets.
then to top it off ... a 6-46 3" Wilton... :pimpflash There was another parker vise there but the tail end of the slide was busted off so I left it. The wilton was 8 bucks and the parker was 12... go figure that one out. The parker still had nice red paint...:dunno:

Things go half price at 2:00 but there wasn't much left so I probably won't return.

Topop- some good hauls. Looking good there guys.

Went out to the ice market, I mean flea market today not expecting to find anything but I did okay.

Couple Bonney service wrenches, Craftsman and S-K extensions, Snap On and Vulcan sockets, Vulcan 1/4 driver. Another Gun mounting wrench for the collection. Stanley and Witherby chisels, Indestro T- bar, Cornwell screwdriver.

Highlight is the "Long C" Craftsman chisel and punch set. All are correct period except for one later one in there. Pretty sure I have the missing one in the garage.

Spent $24

I love that Craftsman combination wrench stand topop101!
Looking for anything to trade for it?

This was the reason I was first at the sale! The only tool picture on the sale.

http://www.estatesales.net/MO/Saint-Joseph/64506/1092222

I got there a lil after six this morning for an 8:00 start. Next guy showed up with in minutes . He's an axe junkie and grabbed those up while I went for the other stuff. I was ok with giving up a pair of axe's to him today.... today!

It was a great stop that's for sure. TOPped off my week. Sadly the larger socket are a mix of NB, Craftsman and Snap-on ... not plomb/plvmb. But I did get several out of the NB tool box yesterday so it's still a nice score.

Well, it turns out that 50' of 12/3 cable I picked up is no good. When I tested it, it showed an open ground (I always test and rebuild cables before using them). So I opened it up and the insulation on the white wire was crumbling. Usually you can cut it back 6" and find good rubber, so I tried. Six times I tried. Finally I decided to make a 25 footer and see what I could use from what was left. No-go. The white wire was fried all the way down. If I'm lucky, I might get a 10 footer out of it.

:dunno: Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose :dunno:

Ouch: think there is ten bucks in copper there? you can at lead add it to a copper recycle bucket. (I have them for copper, brass, and Aluminum...)

Jake, cut it in to 6-7' lengths for machine cords, test each section though to be safe.

Good finds guys, I hit a couple sales today and came home with only a few old hard cover books to cover my pegboard with and a huge ball bearing. Spent $2 again, no pics.

SWMBO and I swung through the ReStore in Worcester today looking for cabinets for her office break room. No dice, but I did find this early 1900's Disston & Sons rip saw with a decent etch. It's missing the medallion, though. I thought I could salvage one from one of my other estate finds, but again, no dice. Oh well, not wasted money at $2.75.

Top if the Parker is a decent model, then the $12 is worth it for the parts heck if the wrench is there, that alone is worth more...

fixed base 953. If it had been a swiveling ******* with no.2 wrench I would have grabbed it for sure. But the rear end of the slide was pretty beaten. So was the anvil pad on the lil Wilton but I think I can clean it up a bit , pop in some new jaw and send it on it's way . The way they have been selling on line that vise alone will pay for my WEEK! I sold a 3-1/2" er for 435 two weAks ago :eyecrazy:

Stopped at a local chain pawn shop while running errands and saw this bag. Looked at the tap opened it just barely and went straight to the register. Didn't know (care..LOL) what else was inside till I got home.

Picked this up on Thursday, but didn't get it unloaded until today. It was sitting next to a dumpster, so I grabbed it. Had to fix one drawer, and it's fully functional. I love it, been looking for one for a long time. Most people seem either scrap and list them on CL for silly money.

That Miller helmet doesn't go with all that Lincoln stuff, so just box it up and send it my way. :)

What a steal! I actually own that exact same helmet and paid much more than that! Well done!

OK, I made it back after several stops. I had to bang on the starter solenoid once to get it to start, but the bank, two yardsails, another stop to get 2 gallons of oil, and yet another to get the starter the Van needs, and I'm home with this stuff from the last Yard sail. I wish I got there earlier!

Vlchek and SK DBE's, 4 Stanley wood handle drivers, A deburring tool, a Mini Duracell grip screwdriver with reversible blade or Phillips, A horseshoe (I'll probably nail this to my shed), and a couple of (Medical equipment?) clamps. this may be to clamp to a table and strap something too?

attachment.php

A couple of medical vial boxes. oddly they are 8X8, so 64 pockets. I think Ill re-purpose them though...

attachment.php

A Brass ratcheting winch off a Sailboat. The bits are al from a plastic bin, and I was interested in the plug making bits. the rest is mostly scrap; Williams Ignition wrenches, plus one Plvmb orphan, and the odd wrench was also in the rubber banded bundle; a ****** from India.

attachment.php

What looked like a generic metal box...

attachment.php

Was probably the coolest find! The wrenches didn't come with it, I added those so I have 1/2 the set! The wear marks under the open ends match EXACTLY!! Mid 30's to probably 42 or so based on the yellow Long C Craftsman logo. I've never seen a carry box with the wrench rack in it!

attachment.php

Oh it all came to $15!

and these are an addition that came in this week from Eprey. I don't often buy tools from Eprey, but these were a good deal with free shipping. I wanted them for the 3 6 pt DOE's all Indestro of one model or another.
