The info on the balls that often get lost is helpful.

What does Sears do with the left over parts from ratchet rebuilds ?
Trash or are they saved ? I could use some clips from the 3/8 RHFT and LL

They are actually "supposed" to be thrown in the scrap tool barrel but I tend to save some parts. I'll search my stash for some of the clips for the RHFT ratchets for you.

This May be a stupid question that I should know the answer but which ratchet are you referring to as LL?

Many thanks Lordabraxis, for posting this. I'm not where my C-man ratchet-head, 1/2" torque wrench is, so I don't right now, have the C-man number for it, but I got it in 1978. IT is the type that you twist the handle to increase/decrease the torque setting. It clicks when the correct torque is reached. I did check with Sears in the 1990's sometime to see if they would warranty it, as the ratchet mechanism broke, but they wanted to give me a crappy new torque wrench. Since then I have it set to tighten and I never change from that. The ratchet mechanism still works to tighten only, and after each use I set the torque value back to zero. Are you aware of anyone else who has a similar torque wrench who has found a rebuild kit for it? Thanks.

Edit: I found the number of my torque wrence. It's 9-44443

Thanks for posting! I could not find my ratchet in the table though, it's a 1/2" flex head quick release #44984. It's an older USA made unit. I've looked up kits on eBay but get conflicting information on what actually fits my ratchet. Can anyone shed some light?

^Thanks! Somehow I missed that. :headscratch:

I ended up going to my local sears and they gave me just the gear out of #43447. It's made in China, and is slightly different but at least it's not got any broken teeth (yet...). I'll probably end up breaking down and ordering a kit from eBay at some point.

You know I was looking at some old Craftsman ratchets and found a refurbished ratchet with a black switch lever. Can any of you tell if these refurbished ratchets have chinese parts or where the parts are coming from? Is the black swithc lever plastic or steel?

That one has Chinese guts. I think the switch lever is still metal, it's identical to the switch that was in the kit I got parts out of. Plus it's got the warranty sticker on it.

In the PDF it says that the China ratchet has improvements for enhanced dirt filtration.
Does that mean that Chinese ratchet is superior to USA ratchet? That's weird considering that in popular culture the opposite is claimed about chinese tools :/

I took apart my 1/2 Craftsman ratchet to clean and grease, and I lost a part by the switch lever. I have the spring, but I think there was a ball bearing on top of the spring that engaged the switch lever.

Craftsman Repair kit is 44784, which is no longer available. Any ideas for a work around to replace the missing ball bearing, or spring cover?

I don't have the ratchet in front of me, but believe it is a 44974. thanks Rich

So they charge for the rebuild kits now? I guess it's been a long time since I used and or broke one. Scratch that, that's not true. I was hammering on something the other day with a 1/2" RP Craftsman ratchet. :D

Officially, they've never sold the rebuild kits - they either replaced your ratchet with a new or rebuild, or rebuilt yours while you waited, but there was no guarantee that you'd get yours back, or a new-off-the-shelf.

Unofficially, some stores would give them away/sell them for a penny, which is where most of the eBay kits come from.

You don't need a new kit to fix your ratchet if the teeth on the anvil (gear) and pawl are fine. Just take the handle to a hardware store with a good assortment of parts drawers and pick out a ball bearing that loosely fits the hole.

Buy extras in case you lose it while assembling again. Some members do the assembly in a plastic shopping bag to catch the bearing if it escapes.

I had to make a clip from an SK ratchet for a rhft and it worked just had to cut and bend. If any on runs into this issue here's the fix.

Ball sizes are listed in the PDF in post#1, locate the size for your ratchet and pick up at your hardware store as mentioned.
4.5 mm ball is pretty common on the RP ratchets.

Great, thanks for the answers and info on the ball size. Rachet is in great shape, just need to pay attention when cleaning and greasing it. Rich

AFAIK there are no kits to be had for the pre-model number 'flying V' =V= ratchets.

If it has sentimental value to you your best bet may be a donor ratchet off ebay. Still plenty to be had for around what the cost of what people on ebay typically would want for a kit in any case.

BTW, did we have a cheater on that or what?

Dad has an old (before my time anyway.. early 70s?) 1/2" torque wrench, I'm guessing that uses the same kit as mopar man?

The kit for that torque wrench is definitely not the same as moparman's (different generation plus yours is quick release). At least yours has a model number - 44443 (long as it belongs to that box). Assuming the quoted post below is correct then I think that kit can still be found on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Craftsman repair kit 43447

Here are part numbers.

The torque wrench is 44443. The 1/2" ratchet I used for parts is 44985, and the kit for that ratchet is 43447. Both the ratchet and kit are discontinued. But I see plenty of those ratchets at the flea market. Or see if your local Sears will take parts out of that ratchet which was traded in.

The older version of this ratchet, the one with the oil hole, is 44975. But this will not work because the pawl is a bit different, as it has what Adam calls a D-post pawl. But I think the gear might be the same - I did not look when I saw the pawl was different. My older torque wrench which was made in 7/76 has a D-post pawl. My made in 5/78 torque wrench in the above pictures has what Adam calls a tang pawl.

EDIT: Might want to have a read of that old thread just to make sure. Seems that kit does work for that model torque wrench but not all of the parts in it will fit.

I've got a Craftsman RHFT repair kit in 1/2" drive that I'd sell/trade if anyone is looking for one.

Yea I believe it was a cheater bar incident, best I can remember it was many years ago in my young & dumb days.

Thanks
