I answered a Craigslist ad for a Craftsman block grinder yesterday. We couldn't come to an agreement on a price for the grinder, but I came away much lighter in the wallet anyways as the man was slowly selling off his father-in-law's estate.

Pic 1: The whole lot. Paid $170 (way more than I am accustomed to paying)

Pic 2: Craftsman 506-51920 woodworking vise

Pics 3 & 4: Craftsman Router bit set

Pic 5: 1/4" steel stamps. Manufacturer unknown

Pic 6: Craftsman Crown top toolbox with Craftsman 3/8" speed driver, Williams slip joint plier, 1/2" drive socket set, Craftsman crown top wrench set in original bag.

Pic 7: Vintage Snap-on 1/2" drive deep socket set. Incomplete - missing 5/8, 11/16, and 3/4. Proto 1/2 drive 5/8 deep impact socket, Craftsman -vv- 13/16 spark plug socket.

Man I'm super jealous of those file cabinets Merc. I personally think you ****! I keep seeing the blueprint cabinets for $500-1000 which is a wee bit out of my budget.

Found this cupboard on Craigslist. All the tools but the plane and 1 screwdriver are original. The carpenter saw and little vice are Dunlop, which are the correct age. He had the original sheet with picture and parts list too. Also had the extra Craftsman Yankee screw driver, pliers, and tape measure. My wife brought all this home for only $100.

Can we hire your wife to shop for us. Less driving around to sales and she obviously gets great deals.

JBull - In addition to drooling over your find, there are a lot of guys that would love to fondle the manual for that cabinet as well. If you can make the time, do you think you could scan and post the pages ?

Good Lord, man! All that from a Craigslist ad for a grinder, and you didn't buy the grinder!!? I also can't believe you're taking in all these tools and never selling off any of them. Do you have unlimited storage space?

Regardless, nice haul!

Sadly, I don't have unlimited storage. Truth is, I've been playing Tetris with my shop for some time. I kinda wanna start selling, but just haven't been able to pull the trigger. Perhaps one day ...

I'm off to look at a vintage machinist box full of tools now!

Several years ago (okay maybe 20 years ago) I bought some real old leather harnesses. Most of the leather fell apart at the touch, but I saved most of the metal pieces, with thought I'd clean them up someday.

Today was the day.

Pic 1--Buckles. I'd think made by blacksmith, but could also be machine made

Pic 2--Pair of Clip Rings and on each is a trade mark logo

Pic 3--Rings, etc

Pic 4--Horn with #2 marked on it (size?)

Pic 5 & 6--A picture of a horse, with clip on back to slide onto reins

Pic 7--When I was over at Estate Sale today, out in garage was a print by Chuck DeHaan for Potts Longhorn Leather Co Circa 1967 1968 and called Sellin' OL' Yeller. Had stains and rips, but figured it fit perfectly into todays clean up.

Ebay. It's easy, you don't have to deal with people directly, and the Snap-on stuff goes for ridiculous money. There's also a market for many of the other brands it there too. I'm putting those two big Snappy impact sockets I got yesterday on Ebay, and expect them to bring in $20 each.

Those initial successes will whet your appetite for more. Plus, even if you don't make money, you can easily break even and make your hobby cost neutral.

Good luck!

I think eBay makes sense if you have a high enough sales volume to justify the trips to the post office. Otherwise, you are spending so much time, gas, etc, that it really isn't worth it for the $3-10 profit here and there. You might break even on paper, but your effective hourly wage for the time/effort it takes to do so is pretty lousy... :dunno:

With all the fees and crappy way Ebay treats sellers anymore I rarely sell anything on Ebay anymore. I use Craigslist, internet forums and even Facebook "for sale" pages.

I have used eBay since April '99 for buying just about everything. I haven't sold many things because of the time involved with shipping. With small items, I have no excuse ... I just need to do it

First off, you're talking to a group that drives all over creation to buy bench grinders, vises and tool boxes. To say a trip to the post office somehow makes it not worth to sell something is silly. In fact, you don't have to go to the Post Office--you can print your own postage online at a significant discount (10-20%) and just stick it in your mailbox. I bought a cheap electronic scale to make sure I'm getting the weights right and this is how I do all my sales.

Plus, if you consider just buying and never selling anything, then your hourly rate is negative! I'm not saying you're going to earn a good living this way (some people do), I'm just saying it's a way to pass on the stuff you don't want and to keep the tools you really do want for less or no money.

Hoarders are gonna hoard. But if someone wants to avoid having their garage/basement/attic/living room looking like some of the places we pick, then Ebay is an easy way to move stuff. To each his own.

I gave up on Eprey when they started requiring sellers to accept Pay Pal whether they wanted to or not. I don't trust Pay Pal to be equitable in a dispute and there are way to many scum bags taking advantage of their "the seller is always right" attitude.

What I do sell is CL or occasional sales or trades here.

Funny you should mention scammers and PayPal. I had one contact me recently about buying an air compressor (which I was advertising on Craigslist), wanting to pay me with PayPal and then send his shipping company to come pick it up. I did some googling and uncovered that exact scam. The funny thing is I don't think I was ever talking to an actual human. The responses I received were generic and only loosely related to my replies, like the scumbag had a computer program hitting up thousands of ads to filter for the 1% gullible enough to fall for it. Then an actual human criminal would take over.

Anyway, I've had good luck so far. As I said, maybe I'll feel differently if I have a failed transaction.

Okay, Selling Your Finds PSA sub-thread complete. Now back to our regular programming.

Speaking of Spams, I got to love her, but my girl was gullible enough to fall for one of those rip off warranty things they send around, with your name, year make and model of your car,
"your warranty has expired, or is about to expire"
"act now or you will be responsible for costly repairs"
It would have cost her like $3,600.50 over the next 2 years if I hadn't made her call them and cancel the rip off automatic payments.

Funny thing is, I found the same phone number and same street address, same suite #, and zip code in Plano Tx, that was on her paper,
and on line complaint, as a debt collection, consolation company.

I understand the concerns with ebay and paypal taking thier percentage and possible chance of scams. But honestly if i didn't sale on ebay I wouldn't get anywhere near the amount I do on some of my tools due to a larger market on Ebay.

So in the end I get more money for my stuff even after they take their part of the sale. As for shipping them, I drive by the post office everyday to work so I just print my label online after I weigh it with my scale and then take it in to the drop off box. no waiting in line and so on.

That one, plus variants is well known. It goes along with the "I'll send you a check for an amount over the cost of the item and you can send me the overage back" Later you back tells you that check (they will even falsify a certified check) has bounced and you are out both the $$ and the item.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is... :pimpflash

I wasn't even talking about the extra percentage, which is another way to "tax" the seller. Narrow margins disappear quick if you don't pay attention...

I get at least one a week. An e-mail addressed to my [email protected] mail box. Here's the latest example;

Dear Customer Service

I am introducing myself as Kenneth Tumer and I am one of the purchasing officers at Global Supplies International. My company is out in the market sourcing for Storage Cabinets suppliers of which we came across your company.

I will appreciate if you would kindly send me a catalog including the types of Storage Cabinets you manufacture or deal with, better still a link to your webpage with your products so I can go through your Storage Cabinets and get back to you with desired choices.

I believe you do accept pick up orders as well as credit card payment on purchases. I will be honoured to receive a timely response with information and proceed with the order.

Cheers,
Kenneth Tumer

The scammer never went to the website, if they did they would know what credit cards to use and what items are available. The "we will pick up the order" is another clue. :dunno:

This has been happening since I signed up with a industrial directory that advertises world wide. I have an app that tracks every view of the website, it amazing how many middle east countries are going to my website.

Sorry about derailing this thread.

I agree that tool box is a score. The limited number of tools makes it look almost quaint by GJ standards of today, but it looks perfect for a condo owner or a homeowner with limited repair ambition.

I answered a couple of CL ads the past two days and was happy with my efforts.

First off, I drove 10 mins away after work yesterday to look at a milk crate of tools. All I could see in the CL ad was unknown rusty wrenches poking above the crate - which meant they were big wrenches. I grabbed the milk crate and a 5g bucket of tools for $25

Pic 1: The wrenches: Split fairly evenly between USA and China

Pics 2- 6: The USA wrenches.

Proto - 1 5/16", 1 3/8", 1 1/4", 1 1/8", 3/4"
Herbrand - 1 1/4", 1"
Blue Point - 1", 15/16", 7/8", 3/4", 11/16", 5/8"

Pic 7: Armstrong impact wobbly

Not pictured are the DBE wrenches (next post), Chinese wrenches (1 1/2" and smaller) HF air tools, HF chisels, and a few other misc tools.

The rust appears to be mostly surface rust and should clean up quite nice.
