I picked up this grinder today. Rebranded as a Wilton model #157, but I believe it's a Wissota. Couldn't turn up much info on this particular bench grinder. Any help as to identifying it's Wissota model number would be appreciated.

I suspect that "WI-9 in the Serial No. box is actually the model No. I google imaged searched and a lot of labels show that type of "too short for a S/N" style of No.

"WI" being Wissota...

Same style label as Wissota that's certain.

Wilton Model #157 Serial w1-92
3/4 hp 3450 rpm 8" wheels 3/4" arbor

I was fortunate enough to have had a one hour conversation with the retired CEO of Wissota about a year and a half ago. Great guy. That is definitely a Wissota. They took a lot of pride in their small diameter motors. Also the Serial number is the date of manufacture. So your grinder was made in 1992.

Great grinders:thumbup:

Last week i found this 10" 1hp 115v bench grinder in a non-working condition for $35. 11 dollars for a new capacitor and it works perfectly. I removed the sides, made covers for the oil impregnated felt and voila a great buffer for the shop!!

VERY nice Rick! Too bad it's missing the right side guard.

Interesting, I had a look at my 1931, 32, 33 Sears catalogs and they also had a "Driver" line up to 32 when Craftsman and Companion Branding took over completely from Driver. but yours is "The Driver Line..." and clearly used a different logo style than the Sears Driver. Similar era though, both with 110V rather that 115, or 117V I also looked for that stand, and it wasn't shown. Funny, it was in 33 that Sears offered a self enclosed Motor grinder. before that it was a belt drive Pedestal. I wonder if there were any connection between the two drivers? Possibly not as yours is SKF bearings and the Sears Driver used Timken

That walker turner is so freaking cool. The label has a sense of artwork to it that hardly any newer tools even come close to replicating.

Excellent heavy-duty base, but I suspect there will be times when you wished that aluminum mount was smaller to give you more access to the buffing wheels. I'm still jealous.

I made the top. I agree about access, but with a 10" wheel I still have a lot of room. I only paid $130 for the stand. It weighs about 150 lbs

Just found this guy. Need a grinder anyway and you guys have me all hooked on vintage stuff now! Going to pick up sooner than later. Pics look good and price is right as far as I know. Can't see the stand very well at all in CL pics. Looks really complete. Will post more after I get her home.

Trying to buy this stuff right! Love the old tools.

Just picked up this Baldor for $65. When it's up to speed, it occasionally makes a noise, like a vibration on the shaft. Is there a way to grease the bearings? Or do they just need replaced?

Just got her home. Judging by the wasps nests on the left wheel, it hasn't seen service in a while. Check out the motor tag! Only thing wrong I can see if some electrical tape on the cord, easy fix. Should clean up real nice. Runs great and takes about 2 hours to wind down once you turn it off! LOL! Pretty cool for $50.00 I think.

x2 - What Outlawmws said.

Also, when you have it torn down, inspect the arbor/shaft and flanges.

The 0.75 HP Model 862RE Baldor I am restoring, uses a roll-pin to fix the inner-flange to the arbor/shaft.

The hole & notch for the roll-pin are seen in the picture below.

Roll-Pin%20Fi%20P1100869.jpg

If the roll-pin is missing/broken and the flange is loose on the arbor/shaft, the stone/flange may 'walk' on the arbor.

That is a very good find!

Have you checked out the 'let's see your craftsman block grinders' thread?
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157794

It is dedicated to CM grinders with a motor like yours, and would fit in nicely if you posted pics there also.

BTW - The long spin-down time, is a sign of dry bearings. New, fresh greased bearings have more drag and take relatively less time to stop spinning <60 secs. or so.

The bearings are easy to find on Amazon, eBay, Graingers, .... and not expensive.

Also, the wheels can deteriorate if they get damp/wet. Please read the Grinder Safety portion of the thread in the link in my signature line.

Welcome to Block grinder ownership!

Thanks for that bearing advice. I need to do some reading! I figured I'd do a wheel inspection based on what I've read so far. It will get a wire on one side, too. I took it off the base and it was made April 23,1973.

I've already been told you're the EXPERT on these, can you tell me, is that a Craftsman stand? It only has 38221-113 in the cast base.

Glad to know "I ****" on this one!

Is there anyone in the Central New York (upstate) area looking for a nice $100 project?

If I was closer [or had more room :p], I'd be checking this guy out.

Man that is a GREAT deal. I have that exact same grinder, and it is one of the best that I have seen. Love the cabinet for storing wheels and tool rest's.
Hope someone here grab's that one.

Not exactly a bench grinder, but I do see a few pedestal grinders...

IMGP0295%20600x800_zps7kyfgjrm.jpg

I bought it for real cheap, but had to have the motor rewound to 220v 3-phase from 550v. It swings 2"x12" wheels and hums right along. Super quiet and vibration free.

Here's a few pics after I cleaned it up and painted it...

Grinder%201_zpsmrlsddpo.jpg

Grinder%204_zpsx57u1ow1.jpg

Grinder%206_zpsnd5ufx17.jpg

It was made by the U.S. Electrical Tool Co. which is still in business and they still sell this grinder, although mine is at least 50 years old.

This is a 7" 1750 RPM US Electric grinder I picked up. It is missing one guard and part of the sliding tool rest, and eye shields. Nice paint job, it covered "everything" except the new switch, name plate, oil caps, and the carring handle someone installed at some point. The good news is it has a new cord and runs great !
I didn't need another project or grinder but you know how that works.

What's the consensus on painting old Baldors? I was thinking to paint mine to match my vise (hammered light blue). Or is it blasphemy to paint it anything other than industrial gray? bf15b62022037c2876576a7da1306dae.jpg6f5bcbf43dd7c2d0b8a8a7d8345d7eb9.jpg

Paint it like you want it. I think industrial gray is the cheapest color they could come up with. I see nothing wrong with color.
