Holy cow.

You're proof of the adage that if you need to have something done, give it to a busy man.

I'm guessing that the center of the universe is also the center of a time warp...

Dang, that car turned out fantastic & looks really great sitting there on the lift. What a kind soul you are to agree to help restore the car of someone who you hadn't previously known.

Re: 1963 Chevy II's First Visit

I think my eyes are broken. Did you paint that car? That is a great color.

More 1963 Chevy II Restoration

A day of rest in-so-far as the house project goes, so here's a little more background on the Chevy II project.

First thing we had to do was clean up and organize Mike's garage, create a usable shop area and beef up the lighting. Next since this was early December we had to have heat out there so we coaxed his old oil burning Jungers stove to life. Lastly a proper shop and assembly manual were acquired. Now we could begin.

The car was changed to a dual master cylinder brake system so we had to fabricate new brake lines using a tubing bender, just like was done with Gus last year.

Tubular a arms and disc brakes had been installed...

...so the front suspension was all set.

The engine was then...

... disassembled and inspected.

Since Mike wanted a little more "punch" than what a standard 6 could provide, the head was sent out to a 6 cylinder performance specialist in Iowa. We also installed a modified performance Comp Cams camshaft and a larger exhaust manifold to help the engine breather a little better.

The engine was completely rebuilt...

...right in Mike's garage shop...

With the engine completed...

...it was installed...

...without any problems. Note we did have to remove the intake and exhaust to make the installation easier. The blue straps are supporting the rear of the engine since the transmission hadn't been installed yet.

Wanting more performance and better gas mileage than a standard 2 speed power glide would provide, we installed a 700R4 transmission which is a fairly modern 4 speed unit. A company in California proves a complete kit for changing over to a 700R4 including a new cross member. We had to have the existing driveshaft shortened and balanced for the new transmission. With that all completed we turned to the interior.

Dynamat was used for sound and vibration suppression and...

...Dynaliner was used as a thermal insulator in the interior.

The body was prepped...

...for paint.

Thankfully the car had excellent sheet metal with very little rust repair needed.

With that I'll take a break and will continue shortly. Thanks again everyone for all the support and encouragement.

I'm getting ready to put that dynaliner in my vette build so what is that tape you used ? A/C duct tape is what I have in mind

The Chevy ll looks great. I am a little confused though. Is Mike the fourteen year old son, now in his mid sixties? Thanks for sharing , Brian

It is all coming together now, the Blackhawk Jack you posted previously was his, and this is what you have been up to. I noticed your productivity had been a little lower than what had become your norm but figured it was all due to the home sale, move, and build. I didn't realize you had been hiding in the corner restoring a car from the ground up! That is great of you Thomas and I'm very happy for the two of you to have been able to get this car on the road again.

Missing many of the photos of the house work now.
HOTFR8, I think it's a Photobucket problem. Many of the photos on my thread are broken as well. When I fixed a link and then did a preview it was still broken. I'm going to give Photobucket a little time to fix it before I go nuts and re-host all of my photos....

Thanks Bob for the heads up. Chris and I are not having any issues with all the pictures I've posted. We can view everything just fine. She uses Windows and I'm a Mac kinda guy so we have both covered. I use Photobucket as well. Keep me informed if the problem persists.

I should be more specific... I am missing one photo from post 9429 and I can see none of the Chevy II pics. Seems like a photobucket issue but it's weird that it's not all of the photos.

Just checked and all the foundation, insulation, drainage, and spraying, also the Chevy II restoration was there. No issues on this end.

Photos look fine on my end, from the last 2 pages at least.

Impressive start to the house build! I knew it was going to be impressive, and I am looking forward to the next months of build and setup!

I may have missed this, how are you going to get future shop tools into the basement? Will you have access for equipment after the house is complete?

Keep up the great work, and detailed posts! Thanks!

All are working fine here, Not a one missing!

Folks, yesterday my wife and I along with my brother and his soon to be wife made the 3 hour trek South to central Illinois and checked out The Restored 1930's Auto Shop. :willy_nil

In the 3 hours we spent there I came to the realization that it was obvious why Thomas and Chris are living in the Center of the Universe. Obviously they were put there in hopes that the generosity of this couple would radiate outward and infect others in it's path!!!

Never have the four of us been welcomed in a manner where you'd think we all knew each other since birth. Thomas and Chris were such great host's and took the time to show us all the awesomeness of this thread in person that most will only see in pictures. Seriously, if you are ever traveling and come within oh - say a 1000 miles of their home - make a detour and plan a visit!!

Chris even went so far as to make us a light lunch before we left! Thanks - it was perfect and very much appreciated!! Two demerits for Thomas not stocking the Pepsi machine...

It was pretty neat to see this place in person and get acquainted with the layout of the land and shops that you just can't get in pictures and trust me, it is very impressive and gives one a great understanding of the work that has gone in to the shop.

I'm really still soaking it all in and making mental notes of all the neat ideas I saw that can be incorporated into my own shop - from the aluminum airlines to the automated bleeder on his compressor to the simplest thing like the floor in the shop and his wood storage rack, the ideas are endless and I'm sure I'll forget more than I remember.

And that's really what makes The Garage Journal one of the best sites on the web - People Helping People, it's a Beautiful Thing!!

...and now the walls have been poured. That's how projects are suppose proceed don't you think?

Yup all mine, just like that every time...except the dishwasher install and a separate IKEA kitchen cabinet install today: both of those were very un-Thomas like. :) words were said, both jobs completed, eventually. Big ups to IKEA for their made in USA cabinet bases (doors and drawer fronts made in Lithuania (where the client was from!)).

Using firefox and have never had an issue Thomas. I think it depends on what internet system you're using.
