EX: with Carla's tip about Goodall Pratt RL found this vise with a sticker on it that might help you since your vise looks pretty similar. RL posted this picture over on his new thread he started about a wilton vise and power arm he found and is restoring.

what say you??

Finished up the Parker 974 today. Decided to go with boiled linseed oil on it didn't polish jaws they were in great shape. Started on the Craftsman 5191 I thought I was going to have to replace the badge but simple green to the rescue it was just dirty four hour soak cleaned it right up.

Exmax,,,,,Blue Frog has the same vise that Carla posted,,,,,posted on page 863, post 17253, if you care to look.

Thanks! I think I now have the manufacturer but not sure of the model. Mine weighs nearly 40 lbs so it might be a bigger brother to the others shown.

The folks I got it from are looking for that one pipe jaw. They seem t think it was being used to prop the shed door open but haven't located it as of yet.

Well check this out! The old Columbian vise did have a collar for the screw! Found it under my work table. Must have rolled off when I took everything apart and was already loose. On a side note I tried electrolysis tonight the of course the battery charger is one of the automatic ones and no extra car battery laying around... oh well I'll get it figured out.

TJ: congrats on the new BABY

Vises: nice HOLLAND'S combo vise. it's a keeper and looks like it's in great shape too.

ALL: anybody have a clue what this 6 inch wide jaw 150 pound vise is that has initials of M N on it's side? the owner made a pretty cool stand and put on a RR anvil too welded to the stand. this vise is for sale and not in my budget in case any of you has a grand laying around.

Next are a few Record's I purchased at an auction. One 8" and two 6". ONe of the 6" looks to be painted by hand? Maybe it was refurbished? Also, just curious, what are these worth in fair market? I'll likely keep them but wondering if I got a good deal or ripped off. I paid about $100 each. Too much? I wish they had swivel bases....can they be added? Are these keepers or new **** like most other new tools?

Thanks again!

They are the later ones that aren't quite as nice as the older ones, but still good vices, you don't show the other side where it would say "Made in England", if they were made before the move to China. Swivel bases are an add on on these, so if you can find one you can have it as a swivel. As to Value, here where the majority out there are Records, you can find 6" for less but an 8" for the equivalent of $100 would be a good deal.

It is usually a safe bet that they are offshore models when you see the open style bolt slots on the sides... the English castings had through holes with machined or cast pads for the lock toggles. Notice the divot on the side of the dynamic slide ? it should have been drilled through as it is the oil access point for the screw.

There are definitely 820s with Schiller Park castings...almost bought one a few months ago, but passed on it to get a Chicago baby with original paint and stickers.

I've seen a Chicago baby with a date stamp well into the 1970s...20 years after the move to Schiller Park!

The Schiller baby 820 Wilton's are rare, of the 30 plus 2" babies on my database only 1 is a Schiller with a date of 3 85. The latest stamp on a Chicago baby so far is 3 81!

I did get a response look at the previous page they sent me a link to a 1926 catalog for goodell pratt she's a pretty old one!

Thanks! I think I now have the manufacturer but not sure of the model. Mine weighs nearly 40 lbs so it might be a bigger brother to the others shown.

I would have never known it was a Goodell Pratt, but there are a few savvy members on this thread, Carla being one of them. Now knowing it is a Goodell Pratt, I found these 3 brochures I had saved.

(a set of 12 vises for $54!)

Exmaxima, yours might be the 523 on the first brochure, 41 pounds.

Bought a Charles Parker 974 vise on Saturday evening.

Got a chance on Monday morning to go through it, but had to stop before finishing the clean up as will need a 1-3/8" socket to get the swivel base off to clean the interior.

Patent date 1930 cast on one side, and both jaws are smooth, which could be what was ordered or just through wear.

All and all, very good, solid vise.

Mike

Happy Monday to all! Here are a few more weekend finds. The Bonney is ultimately a parts vise...the base is incorrect and it's missing parts.

Nice haul VISEs. Here's the Bonney I picked up yesterday. It's in great shape aside from the repaired base. I was pretty bummed when I saw that. Luckily whoever attempted to repair it obviously had no idea what they were doing. It should be fixable.

Those with the slotted bolt holes were made in the UK before they went to China, I have a couple smaller ones with Made in England on, although they are the 1Ton and 3Ton models, however the amount that are Chinese is the Majority of them, the other side that we cant see in those pics is the only sure answer. They are one of the better options for a Chinese vice, as at least Irwin has kept up a decent quality level on them, but also a high price.

There you go Meatsis. VISEs has a parts Bonney for you. Those rapid transit vises are very high on the cool level. Thanks Meatsis for the video of the rapid transit vise. Very nice to see one in action!

Yes, very cool Vise. Made by Bonney Rapid Vise Co., not Bonney Vise & Tool.

What do you guys think of this Morgan 50? The guy is looking for $100 but I'm thinking I can get it for $75-$80.

Pics I have on my PC at work -

A medium sized Wilton; an interesting one with dovetails, an adjustable gib and a rear sliding jaw; and the generic B&S mill vise...

I do want to pick up a Wilton "bullet", but only if I can grab it cheap enough.

Andy

i saw a vise with dovetails like this over the weekend it and will be coming for sale. it is on the first page of this thread and has a picture. anyone know what it is?

Bingo! That's it, but since mine was essentially a doorstop when I got it the jaws no longer look like that. Still, I appreciate knowing what it is so I can tell my sister that gave it to me (and holy ****, that was an expensive vise in its day). Thanks!

If the jaws aren't all banged up, and you need a vise, $75 would be the most you should offer. It's a non-swivel model--which makes it hard to sell--but at least it has a flat bottom so you don't need to chisel a chunk out of your bench to mount it. Morgan Chicago vises are generally pretty nice, and I have a 140 (swivel base) sitting on my shelf awaiting a restoration when the weather improves.

Thanks! No "made in" markings on the other side unfortunately...I guess they're Chinese...

You mention the swivel base being optional. Does that mean I can buy and add the swivel base to mine? Or does that mean it would have had to be purchased as a swivel model from the go? I'd like to keep them but I think I'm insistent on a swivel model.

edit- I found these on amazon but I cant figure out how it could possibly make the vise swivel...

Drives, I don't know who makes it but it has a very "tall" looking main body on the static, like a swivel jaw vise would have.....at the same time it reminds me a bit of a Starrett 926.

Aside from that, MN.....Minnesota?

Nice looking 6" vise and the stand is decent looking also, but I think the whole thing is overpriced at a grand.

The center of that base rotates in the outer ring, when you do up the lock downs it pulls it up and it locks. The English afterthought style of swivel base is nowhere near as good as the built in USA types, but they do work. You almost never see swivel bases on old vices here.

Worth noting that Amazon seller (data alchemy) is regarded as a scammer, lots of negatives in the Amazon deal thread regarding them.

For what it's worth there is a 5" Chinese record on my welding table that I've abused the hell out of (Sledgehammer included) and it's held up wonderfully. They are surprisingly good vises

The fifth vise from the swap meet Sun. is this Prentiss 4-1/2" swivel jaw swivel base. Pretty nice shape other than a couple issues, first being the back edge of the swivel jaw is chipped. Not sure how this would have happened, this area doesn't seem to really do anything. I'll probably grind it down to smooth the edge out, unless someone has a better idea. It's also missing the lever to pull the pin up to release the swivel, probably end up fabbing something unless someone has a spare they want to part with. Swivel jaw pin came right out after a light tap to the side of it with a brass hammer. Jaws are in pretty nice shape. No marks, model #, or ID on anywhere that I could see, not even on the static jaw behind the swivel jaw where they sometimes do.

Been picking away at the Prentiss double swiveler as I find the time. Made a new swivel lock pin and knob, worked out well. Also, used the mig to fill in the chipped area on the swivel jaw, little more clean up, should be fine.
