Well if I would have known he would go that low I would have got it lol. But I don't need it, glad you got it and that's a nice looking box.

Thanks again.. I told him what I'd paid for others and other than the week of BS'ing with the sellers scheduling, he but on my $100 offer..
-turns out the guy was a MATCO tools dealer and young.. most of the stuff that was pictured in that toolbox on FB was junk--only a few decent odds and ends that the fella just threw to a tote and who knows where it'll go from there.. I am more than happy with the box as it was well cared for. So-thank you again for sharing the find-

Here's my addition to this thread, reposting from the Garage Sale thread:

Craftsman Heritage-logo tool chest. $100 with tools and a few decades worth of workbench miscellaneous nuts, bolts, zip ties, and dirt.

I have one of those I bought 2nd hand about 45 years ago and it has been my daily driver ever since. I had a brown rattle can on hand and most of the paint was gone so it became brown. I would like to strip it and repaint it grey some day.

That looks eerily similar to other Mac boxes that I've seen. If you strip the paint off and look at the back left or bottom, you may find the Mac logo and model number stamped on the back (you cannot see it without stripping the paint first, unfortunately).

This is a dumb question but how do you clean all the rust from a box like this. I see beautiful work done by you guys so I know it can be done. Thanks.

Back is completely stripped and nothing gonna check it again with a magnifying glass and good light.

Sooo, this happened today.

These two are in, "as picked" condition. Once I go through them they will shine up nicely. I have the top and bottom box matches for both so it's like a two for one deal. lol :)

Found this incredibly heavy, well built box at the Lake Tahoe Flea Market for $15. Can't find a brand and looks like it might have originally been grey. Does anyone recognize it? I like this one... and will carry it around for mobile use.

Can someone with better eyes than me identify the maker of this box?

I have an older box with the same handles and acorn nuts and still trying to figure out the maker. Thanks.83ecc20b92323fe61f5ea9c4d7a6645f.jpg0697e69b1d5e91e87b2e5f222c0225bc.jpge34df1480a0cac2971e8c09ecc647e0e.jpg

Those keep popping up over time. I have one, Drives has at least one. Several others have one. We think it aay be from a tractor, but no one has positively ID'ed the source yet. There has been speculation they were hand made, but too many have surfaced...

I looked at that box at the Tahoe flea as well. I was tempted because it seemed very well made but I couldn't find any clues as to who the manufacturer was.

Outlaw - well looks like it will remain a mystery. Going to put it to good use, it's built as well if not better than my old Snap-On portable.

d42jeep - I go to the Tahoe flea 2 or 3 times a year. I always leave with a gem or two. I was amazed / jealous of your P&C find not too long ago! Happy hunting!

Thanks, Paul,
I hit the Tahoe flea most weekends as it is only about 10 minutes away from my summer home. I've found quite a few tool treasures there including this Kennedy Machinists top box that I got there a couple of years ago.

We did figure it out. I'd found the company was out of the midwest (KC?). It is in a post in here somewhere. I'll try and track it down.

You came up with a theory with Butler as a possibler Mfg, but no final conclusion IIR.

I don't think anyone else had an example with the tag, just the Etsy box...

Very nice pickup! Did you get anything else from their garage sale?

No there wasn't any thing else that I was interested in, but the prices were good. I was there at 9 AM and they were wheeling and a dealing! I'm sure they wanted to get the sale over with early.

Perhaps one of our MI members is interested in this CL posting: Racing Pit Cart "War Wagon".
Heavy duty pit cart with Lista tool box, storage cabinet, diamond plate top surface. Used for Grand Am & IMSA road racing.
Listed at $400; not sure that's any kind of bargain, but it sure is some sort of beast :dunno:

Most of my wife's family worked for Butler. Her father, grandfather and uncles were all welders/fabricators. Their employment test was making their own tool boxes.

Since I have accumulated quite a few Dunlap tools, I was unable to leave this early hip roof Dunlap toolbox behind. I found one listed in the 1942 Sears catalog.

That's a cool bit of history. Does the family still have any boxes made from their time at Butler? Do they look like these? Presumably they worked from plans so they could be graded? :dunno: Maybe these are from that test of new employees..

LOL! I had a similar experience with someone selling a "Barracuda" tool box (which was also painted black). I had no trouble identifying it as a Craftsman. Nice scores!
