Yup Justin, I've been running into him at every yard sale or flea market I go to lately it seems. Nice guy, gave me a good deal on that Athol combo vise I posted a couple pages back. Good luck with your yard sale.

Has anyone seen a 6-1/2 inch Prentiss with a quick release. If so what would the model number be. This one is not in my possession but wanted to support the 6-1/2 Prentiss jaws. Never knew Prentiss made one. I am looking for a set of jaws I could measure. Getting the numbers I need from customers is very difficult if not impossible. FMC's spreadsheet mentions a #75 as a 6-1/2 wide jaw vise that weights 150lbs and matches what this weights. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing Km scott. I've seen the prentiss ads for the rapid transit but no actual examples so seeing one is nice.

Very nice and unique. You can see the Prentiss PVCo on the other side. Prentiss bought many smaller vise companies before eventually being bought by Parker. I know of Shepard, Lewis, Blake, as well like Rusty mentioned, the Rapid Transit

Concerning the vise spreadsheet in my signature, I have not had an opportunity to make any updates since late spring time. Time has been tight as of late, there is always something else to do.
Would anyone (or even 2 or 3 people) care to takeover the managing of the spreadsheet? It basically just needs to have new info added, as well as correct any current info that is incorrect. I have a master spreadsheet I can pass on to whoever would be interested, as well as some collected info that needs to be added.

I had a great score today on our local buy and sell site.
One only Dawn 9 inch Wood work vise, needs a little TLC but hardly used coming from a school wood work shop so there is absolutely no wear. I am guessing a quick dunk in the Solar E bath will do the trick plus a few tips from drives vise thread

1/2: With all the health issues you've been dealing with you need a few of these buys to keep you smiling. Well done!!
Not a lot to do on those other than some cleaning and maybe some new grease or oil on the screw. Throw a rag over the screw when sanding or cutting soming in its jaws. Speaking of jaws you might want to add a pair of soft wood for better grip or some oak ir similar for a firm hold.

I refinished this Hollands 400 pipe vise. I like the way it turned out, but in going over it, I’ve come to think it has a design flaw. Other Hollands models (and similar Reeds, etc) have two bolts holding the dynamic jaw to the screw. Having only one, the two halves spread and deform under pressure. I’ve got them more or less back into shape, but put to use, they’d do it again.

At long last I have begun the strip and reco of my Record Auto 74 and the steel model 75.
It took a while to get these two older Records and they have been worth the wait.
Washed down in kero to remove the gunge then a quick hose and into the electro bath. They are coming on well.
For further interest, today I bought a Woden 190/8A QR vice.
Can anyone tell me what these units weigh?
Will I need overload springs in the Toyota and hernia protection when I attempt to lift it into the boot?
Do I need another vice? No, but this thing appealed when I lay my eyes on the images of it.
The anvil has been used but doesn't appear to be beyond redemption and my overall impression is it will come up well.
The QR mechanism is the unknown and I will know more of it when I check it out.

I look foreword to the pics, sound like some good vises. I'm not sure what those weigh, but I'm guessing somewhere between kind of heavy and somewhat heavy, once it's in your car it'll be fine. If your worried about it just take it slow

Patryk: those are a perfect example of Wilton's bottom of the line and top of the line vises. you paid twice as much for the cheap one and the top of the line you better go back and give that old gal some more cash. you did well and is this the kinda stuff blowing around with all those HURRICANES down in your part of the country these days.
welcome to the vise thread and start building some heavy duty shelving and benches cause there are a lot more bigger, smaller, older and cooler vises to be found and bought.

I've built up a small collection of little clamp-on vises. Sometimes they're very handy, but most of the time their use is limited. They other problem is that most of the time, they don't sell for a high enough price to put any time & materials into.
But I still like them and I've found a good use for them.

Widen 190/8A is 90lb (40kg ish) according to the catalogue, for the standard fixed base.
Then today i picked this little bad boy up for 10 bux

I will post what I have in a day or two. I may be able to grab some images off my old PB account (that I won't use anymore because of their extortion 3rd party policy).
The 74 is waiting for a couple of extractions and a final dressing before paint. Half of the 75 is in the electro bath.
Thanks dutch,that is potential hernia material, especially lifting from a chair.
Do you have a link to the catalogue you speak of? Is it in the realm of the Record 114??
I will break it down into manageable pieces. A decent piece of plywood in the boot will be useful too.

Think I found my "forever" vise, 88 pounds of 4-1/2 combo Athol goodness. This one is a bit rare I believe, having the cast in jaws but newer style Starett swivel base ... have only seen one other like this, maybe a transition piece. This will replace my Wilton C1 ASAP. $65, plus I got a great new minion ... says he has typically just thrown vises away in the past (gasp!!).
See an 'AF' in the riveted on ID tag, obviously not factory. Thinking if Air Force it would say USAF, plus minion said from house clean out not a military base. But probably keep it for the character.

WELL DONE and i hope you show us a bit more on how to make one of those cause i also rarely go after those little vises and usually only end up with them if they end up in a box of other stuff i'm buying.
TJ: i'm not sure how rare that vise is, but it has a lot going for it and i'd like to see it alongside your Wilton C1 before you sell it cause i'd bet it dwarfs it.

The Record #75 pre clean.
The swivel base lock bolts are seized as are the jaw fastenings. Usually the electro will take care of that problem and allow them to be removed without risk of breakage.

Drives ... right, an Athol 324-1/2x is certainly no unicorn, but I wasn't able to locate many at all with this type of swivel base. I think it more commonly has round mounting tabs typical on older Athol swivel base vises, this is the kind that is on the newer Starrett replacement of the 324-1/2x, which is the same model number but without the 'x'. In short, older vise and newer base, and doesn't look like after the fact base replacement to me. So maybe a transition piece and those are generally limited in number.

Wow, nice combo. Looks very similar to the 323-1/2 I posted a few days ago (post 59148) except for the later type swivel base you mention. Don't seem to see as many Athol combos for whatever reason. Yours looks like a you **** deal to me.

Here is the Record 74 Auto Vice after the Phosphoric acid wash and water rinse. Fastenings are now soaking with Mouse oil before attempting the impact driver. Maybe some heat will help.
There are a couple of sheared fastenings that need removal too; the anvil lock bolt and a shaft cover machine screw.

Drives ask and ye shall receive. In the middle of an old workhorse C1 and new C2. Definitely closer to a C2 in size/utility. Jaws are 4-3/8", not the 4-1/2" I'd assumed and reported earlier. Just a beast of a vise.
