Re: Show your "Long C" Craftsman!

Intersting. I don't think I ever looked at the wartime catalog because I assumed that the sockets were chromed. Of course, I would like for them to be wartime.

I took a few more pics. If they're polished, then 'highly polished' would be an understatement. However, the bottom of the drive end of the sliding T is highly polished as well, where the bar and the rest of the drive end are not. So, perhaps the sockets are polished.

Here's a pic of the (K) socket next to an early chrome (not underline C) BE socket and a chrome underline C BE socket.

attachment.php

Here is a pic of the inside of the (K) socket (left) and the 1/2" drive BE socket (right). The BE looks to have some chrome inside where the (K) socket looks unplated.

attachment.php

And finally, one additional pic of the handles and one of the (K) sockets.

attachment.php

Do you still think these may be wartime?
I checked all my circle K stuff and they all have complete circles around the K. Yours looks more like a C......and it looks "on purpose"

Yeah, I saw that. Was wondering if someone would notice and comment. It's odd, right? That's the only one of the sockets that looks like that though. All the others have a complete circle around the K. I was thinking just a worn out stamp or something. :dunno:

Found this weekend:

Almost complete Craftsman Circle-H 1/2" and 3/8" drive sets that came in a Craftsman Heritage hip roof tool box.

The most important thing to note - BOTH breaker bars have the original T-bar! That certainly makes up for the missing components, imo!

Notlob,
I hope that you didn't get that today before I got there. You did leave me a few Craftsman pieces. The 1/4" early BE set with the open gear ratchet and holder was kind of cool.

Thanks, Todd. I should admit that my wife found the 1/4" set while I was sorting through a huge batch of sockets. I'll try to get some more pictures after some cleanup.

Inspired by my latest find, I started cleaning up my Craftsman Circle-H and BE tools.

- Pictures 1 and 2 are the socket sets I purchased last weekend, as I found them.
- Picture 3 is the same sets cleaned up, plus a few things added.
- Picture 4 is a mixed Circle-H/BE 1/2" drive deep socket set.
- Picture 5 is a pair amber handled Craftsman BE speed wrenches I acquired from another GJ yesterday. Thank you BMWRD0!

Please do. And I don't care what you paid for it - you ****!

Brian

I took a few minutes yesterday and cleaned off 70 or 80 years of grime from the BE 1/4" drive set. A quick look in the '40 catalog indicates that this set is earlier than that but I found a similar 3/8" drive set. It looks like the case is designed to hold a flex handle and crossbar. Here are some pictures after cleanup. Thanks to Todd and Tool Archives for the catalog image.

Hey D42 -

That 1/4 drive long C set appears in the 1941 and 1942 Cman catalogs as part of a larger 43 piece socket set. I had it in my bag at the estate sale, but decided I already had too many vintage Cman 1/4" sets, and I thought the "clip" was likely non-Craftsman. Bad decision! :tard::tard::tantrum2::tantrum2:

Excellent pictures! If you have more, I'd love to add them to my photo reference library.

In particular, I am looking for any pictures depicting a Craftsman roller from that era.

Thanks!

The reason I ask is I acquired this very nice 3D roller this week that the previous owner and I had agreed was a long C Craftsman, but missing the badge. Now that I see the advertisement, I see it's the same box, but the badge was in a different location.

It is fun to see another long C grinder.
I wish mine was still the original blue color.

How many amps does your half horse model draw?
011 (800x600).jpg
At 5.5, my 1/3 hp model is higher than some newer 1/2 hp units.

I am wondering if they changed the rating system at some point.

The tool rests on your appear to be part of the stand. (?)

On mine, I think they are a poor design, since the only adjustment is fore and aft, or up and down.

There is no tilting feature.

Ugh. My phone takes horrible photos. I'll take better ones with my real camera tomorrow ...

That was sooo three weeks ago, lol!

Not sure how I missed that picture, but I'm happy to see there's another out there! Mine was graciously gifted to me by BMWRD0, so I'm so excited to own one, I won't keep it in the shop - it's in my spare room/office and ready to be put to use.

AE: Riley might be resting from all the shopping he's been doing lately so i'll answer until he shows back up.

BMWRD0 is the handle of another GJ member that lives near all you guys in Portland that i've yet to meet too.

any more old Long C tools to post pics of while i find mine?

MINT: I can't tell you much about your grinder other than it looks like it left the factory that way and it looks MINT. nice find!!

I am not really a Craftsman collector, but have been unpacking a few things:

hey bmwrd0 -

I have this same model grinder queued for an overhaul in the near future. My grinder is presently finished with what appears to be equal parts grease, oil, and dirt. Do you believe the blue/black color scheme on your grinder is original? Unfortunately the 1939-42 Craftsman power tools catalog images for this grinder are not in color.

No, the finish on mine is a restore I did about 3-4 years ago. I found it at Urban Ore in Berkeley covered with old paint and rust for $50, but it ran flawlessly. So, tore her down, cleaned her up and good as new! I based the colors off of a few motors from that period that I have picked up over the years.

NotLob: one of my neighbors (sort of) is selling his Craftsman Long C grinders and it looks pretty original if you are looking for a good idea of maybe what came from the factory if that's what you want to have yours look like. here's a few pictures of it.

AE: thanks a good start. keep looking and i will eventually get some time, but painting the daughter's old room this week to get ready to make it a guest room for our son flying home for Christmas. soon i'll have some to post cause a lot of the old pictures are in my old dead laptop.

cheers all and here's to an EARLY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

AE: this big 1/2 HP long C Craftsman grinder would probably be too big for the little block grinder stands, but I bet it would look amazing on your bench next to your Wilton C2. then keep the little block grinder for smaller jobs or put different wheels on it.
