how about higher end Reeds?

The late higher end Reed's were Columbians with Reed names cast in them. I actually have an earlier one (8" wide jaw 508 fixed base) that was just a Reed name tag riveted over the Columbian name.

When Wilton stopped making the Columbian vises the Reed heavy duty combos ended. There are apparently some Reed 2CA combo vises left in the supply pipeline(Columbian 204 1/2). When they are gone that's it.

Their mid line vises appear to be Wilton Mechanics vises with the square slide, I believe these are made in China.

I brought home the Wizard this afternoon and went to work on the clean up.

The jaws are 3 7/8" wide and the vise weighs about 18 lbs.

I cleaned up as much as I could with some brushes and will probably keep it as is for everyday use.

Here are a few others I've picked up in the last couple months. My home bench also.

I have a Charles Parker swivel base No. 973 1/2 A. The main body was broke, but everything else was good and the pieces sold off, but I still have the swivel base (Stamped #973 1/2A). I believe it matches up to several 3.5 " models.

Does anyone have either a prentiss 91 dynamic jaw and nut or a prentiss 19 body that you would be willing to sell? I have a 91 body with a 19 dynamic in it. Thanks in advance

There is a vise parts swap thread that would be a more appropriate place to post this. Also the classifieds...

Just finished this Parker 439 double swiveler. Made new swivel clamp handles, BLOd the jaws and slide. Very early production with a 1909 Patent date. Satin black paint. Vise was in very nice shape when I got it.

BMR: here's the link to the vise parts swap thread:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88292&highlight=vise+parts+thread

you're active enough that I think we'd be ok if you kept it here or even put it on the vise repair thread cause members ask for vise parts all the time over there.

good luck

Bearded: looks like you might need to build a bigger and beefier bench soon with all those vises. looks like that little open screw vise is in pretty decent shape too.

Thank you drives.

The current bench only keeps 2 vises mounted, and the rest of them have been coming together since September of last year. It's quite fun finding something that I don't know much about, especially with the newness of this hobby. I didn't expect the antique mall to call me on that Western Auto vise 2 hours after I got home, but when they did with a better price than I expected, I knew it would be good to go pick it up.

I am planning on building a pretty large bench that could be 42x144 and 3-4" thick for my company. I have a good amount of board footage of S3S maple from 2000-2001 that would be perfect for such a task.

Joe, I have always been of the opinion that an American vise is too masculine to be called a beauty but rather it should be called "ruggedly handsome". In this case I am searching for a word beyond "ruggedly handsome". Combined with excellent restoration job, it is a simply amazing.

I have never seen one of these Parker 4xx double swivel in person and it is hard to tell from the photos that I found on the net, are the jaws on this series smooth?

Pretty nice Joe. The handle knobs look a little rough, you have a lathe and surprised you are not replacing the round knobs. The finish looks awesome. Nice job.

I wanted to redo them but I have had complaints regarding over restoring vises so I did the minimum on this to try and retain its originally. the new buyer will get a new handle if they choose at no extra charge. Im a little sensitive to not going too far....

How about "Olsen-esque"?

I can see the winter cabin fevers are having their tolls...

You're right about that...

We even had .002 inches of snow (GASP!!!) down here...:scared:

It's got to be "Global warming"...:spit:

A week of night time below freezing temperatures, didn't help my Wife's tropical flowers, any, either...

But it's already nearly 70 outside, so Spring is rapidly approaching...

Here is the newest addition to my bullet family. Model 820 on a powerarm junior. Looks to me like original paint. Does anybody have an opinion on that?
The date code is worn off except for a “12”

It looks like your super young apprentice (God bless him) is already fascinated with the vises! There is nothing like starting training early in life, especially appreciation for vises :)

Thank you yes he is interested in everything that I do. Specially when I’m out in the garage working it’s in his DNA really.

La, well done. But then again it seems you had an unfair advantage over some of us as you have a lot more extensive cuss vocabulary helping you than some of us can muster :D. But seriously very nice job!

007: it looks like a Wilton C1 that is 4.5 inch wide jaws and i think about 65 pounds and AutoPts mentioned the C0 has 3.5 inch wide jaws. if it was a C2 it would be about 100 pounds with 5 inch jaws. the C1 is a good vise for most homeowners.

Shift: it looks like one of Wilton's colors. don't you want an excuse to strip a vise, put on BLO or one of the other new preservatives to keep a NAKED VISE looking good and maybe cook it in an oven (toaster oven might work for that little guy) or in the hot California sun this summer?

Nuke: very nice restoration of your Columbian and now you can keep an eye open for a bigger on for the other end of the bench. WELCOME to the forum!!

LaSurge: yep I think i used up all those words the other day too when i hit my head on a new unistrut i just bolted to the ceiling so I could make some loft storage. my wife was a little shocked herself at the assortment of words that anybody within a mile could hear and she was happy that i only had a lump and not blood gushing out. I hope your Wilton restoration was a bit less painful.

TJ: looks like you fixed your double sig line, but still wondering why you have to say it? once you bolt down that 300+ pound Prentiss 98 you might have the biggest user of any of us in your garage so who cares that you have 10 or 20 little ones on your shelf ready to restore and find new homes.

JOE: would one of those barrel type Parkers fit on one of those cool Parker stands you found or is it too small? nice restoration and i agree that leaving some of the old 100 year old character on these old vises is nice.

I picked up this Luther 2" clamp vise today at the flea market. I have one of their old hand grinders, so it was a nice surprise seeing the label (one on each side of the slide in one of two depressions on each side). I had no idea they even made vises. After a quick search on this thread I discovered that there are a few others out there in the hands of GJ members. It's a sweet little vise.

La_Surge, I'm hoping that you are not burdened with hypertension, if so maybe vise restoration isn't in your best interest.:D

But a darn nice job in the end.

Drives, agreed, I would like to get the P98 up and running this year ... I've already started working on a few of the "small" flippers, but I don't know how many guys would call Wilton C2/C3 and Rocky 577 small lol.

LUG: looks like you found a couple in like new condition minus the surface rust of course. WELL DONE!

VA: :bounce:

TJ: yep all of those LITTLE ones are tiny at 100, 150 & 200 pounds compared to your PRENTISS 98 aren't they?

I bet you will get your exercise and do your young arms and shoulders get sore handling those big vises? also do you haul them home in one piece like I do or are you maybe taking them apart to inspect them a bit better and taking them home in 2 pieces since you are going to restore them anyway?

good luck and hope they have enough GREEN GRABBER PAINT at the store for those or are you planning a different color like maybe the SNAP ON PURPLE?

Thx for the confirmation on C1. After waiting for 4 days, I finally heard back from the seller, he wants $300 which is kind of approaching retail for a used and older model (he is retired now but he used to be machinist so he knows the value and he even mentioned the new ones cost around $800).
