It's going to be fun with someone else knowing how to speak tactical-ese, Steve. :) Less than a week after a foot of snow and temps in the teens, it was 60* F today! I sh*t you not. That is turning into a soggy tx problem for the flea market tomorrow!

Busted! Some habits die hard, don't they?

Surely you have some good rubber boots for when *it* gets deep? :eyecrazy: I had the house door open today, and the garage floor was sweating, until it started raining. Temps dropping significantly tonight.

Catfish, thanks for the feedback on the desk lamp. It's currently up high on a shelf, where it's a VERY welcome addition to the garage, but won't be good for melting crayons :)

Craptain, keep us in the loop as you work on that lathe, nice score!

Steve

Guessing tx is transportation? Interesting. In my world of tactical-ese, tx is transmit freq. As opposed to rx.

Woohoo! Made it to an auction finally!!
Wound up with a "Tool box with contents" and a signal corps model 1914 service buzzer.
$10 for the tools and box, more for the buzzer.

In the box was a Lamson scale side paint scraper, Barcalo adjustable wrench, a Nonskid No.5 screwdriver, Harrington Cutlery carpet knife, UNI whetstone, Pesco pliers, and an older switch plate that will put to good use. The tool box is a Dunlap with a leather handle and nice corner guards so if I can't fix up the box I can salvage it for parts.

I have the same exact box, Swing, although your handle is in much, much better condition than mine, which is badly desiccated. I keep my paltry DUNLAP collection in it, which I hesitate to even show in the presence of Don (d42jeep), also known as DONLAP. :)

I'd love to see close-ups, especially the data plate and whatever that paper (edit: wiring diagram/instructions?) is.

Thought you might [emoji16][emoji16].

Your Dunlap box has far better metal than mine!

Lugz, I finally discovered (many years too late, but better late than never) the trick to getting dried out leather back to as good as it can get.

The reason dried out leather is so fragile is that the fibers are brittle. (pretty obvious, but bear with me..) there are many leather conditioners, but many don't do more than aid with water repelling... The old leather conditioner, was Neatsfoot oil and its still about as good as it gets.

Why? it is an oil form the bones of cows, and since most leathers, are cow hide, its probably the best match available. so what I do is use a soft bristle brush and paint it on a little at a time and give it time to soak in.

When coat one is soaked in, add coat two. Keep repeating until its not soaking in then blot the excess off. Give it more time to really soak deep into the individual fibers. What happens is the fibers are no longer brittle, and they wont break and snap when flexed.

I have a belt that is nearly 50 years old. As it happens, its never seen anything but Neatsfoot. It's still supple and nearly as strong as the day I got it. Worn? Yes! Curved and bent from belt loops? of course, but still going strong...

I'm about to treat an old binocular case and AFTER its supple again, restitch part of it and put it back in service. If i stitched it before, it would likely tear the holes out...

Why it took so long to get it through my head the Neatsfoot could also restore the leather as well as treat it... :headscrat

A caution: there is a "new breed" of Neatsfoot that is cheaper but its NOT 100% Neatsfoot. Shop around and get the real deal 100% Neatsfoot, I do not trust the cheapening of the product...

Wow! Awesome find! I've seen units that were stripped before, but never that complete. The headset (with twisted pair wire), mic (it could work as a telegraph or telephone), and three little tools (a flat head screwdriver, pick like thing, and t-handle wrench) would go in the compartment in the back. It took weird 3 volt batteries but you can make it work with alternatives, carefully. And you could cannibalize a WWII headset. Or just admire it on a danged shelf for how historically cool it looks. :)

I think you have the oldest thing so far with that find. Going into my little green book! :)

Eyup. There are a few basic things I picked up from my old man that I am never without, Outlaw. One of them is Neatsfoot. The others are Go-Jo and chamois cloths. Sounds trite. But not a few days go by that I am not using one or all of them! :)

Hit up my first estate sales of 2018. Both started at 9 AM so I even got to sleep in a bit LOL. If I had gone and looked at my truck I would have got up earlier, a freeze mixed with rain had turned it into a block of ice. Took 15 minutes to get it warmed up and the windows clear enough to drive. Was about 10 minutes late to the first one. Nothing exciting about the picture before hand but a lot of stuff at both. Spent $75 at the first sale and $5 at the second.

Pic 1: First sale mentioned the Snap On air hammer right in the ad, figured it would be overpriced. Pleasantly surprised to find it still there and only $20 for a never been used made in USA, looks like new, Model # PH45B. The Hutchins Made in USA orbital air sheet sander model # 4564 was a nice find as well. The blue case next to them with the old USAF Strategic Air Command patch is a chart case for a navigator I believe. I don't know if I can save that old vinyl or not, may just strip it down to the aluminum.

Pic 2: Still at the first sale, Craftsman screwdrivers made by Pratt Reed instead of Western Forge, Craftsman tape measure, American Wood Type Mfg Co ruler, 17/32" USA dril bit that I actually needed for a project, Matco screwdriver and PowrKraft 1/4" driver with the female drive in the head too. Bunch of batteries mostly with 2023-2025 use by dates. The Swiffer pads and brown square furniture leg cups are something I use and need so saving some money here is more to spend on tools right!!!

Pic 3 and 4: My very favorite find of the day was this vintage Sears Roebuck hand truck in good shape. It didn't have a Craftsman logo like some but it is one thing I have been trying to find for my collection.

Pic 5: Estate sale #2, the company that ran it has the reputation of being high priced. Not much there for me, only spent $5 on Craftsman USA 1/4" and 3/8" ratchets and 4 Professional black screwdrivers.

Well, I wasn't even planning to stop at any sales as I'm in the middle of one one my Lista cabinet redos. Was just going to get some sand for the blaster and came across this sale on the way, ( ok, it was two blocks off my route.
Picked up the needle nose, vise grips, c clamp, so advertising screwdriver, a punch that looks like it was made from a CM wrench and the painters tape.
e6799788f6efcc4ca58a101f270926e9.jpg
OK, back on track to get sand, make a left to get back to route and, dang, another sale, it'll only take a minuite.
Picked up two rolls of 12 gauge, one of 14 gauge stranded wire. The lady had to call the guy out of the house to price for me. He kind of hem-hawed a little, saying he might use the wire. I said fine, no biggie, the lady then made some comment to him that enabled him to spit out a immediate price, $4 for all three rolls. Got the wood mallet, the light fixture, rope and box of 5/16 bolts for another $2.

On to the sand!!!!!

Hit a couple of estate sales yesterday, none of them looked to great so I didn't push to get there early. Did OK at two, third was a bust (but right down the alley from my house, so I at least got good parking!)

Complete vintage Husky 3/8 set, Proto thin nose pliers and punches, chip brushes and a General rule. There also was a set of no-name metric ignition wrenches, stamped but not too bad looking.
After the last sale, I was in the area of the local scrap yard, which also does a lot of salvage. They were having a 30% sale, so I swung in, see what they have in the way of motors. Instead, I found this:
<a href="https://ibb.co/etEcgm"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/jAa5Z6/20180112_145819.jpg" alt="20180112_145819" border="0"></a><br /><a target='_blank' href='https://imgbb.com/'>minus</a><br />
Blue paint (long C) Craftsman lathe, the Atlas 618. Needs a couple parts, the Jacobs chuck is probably shot, a little bit a rust on the ways but not in an important area. $175 out the door. If I cant get it going I can make that back easy in parts, but I love a good project and it is the perfect replacement for my little 109.

Your 2018 Garage Sale Thread host is FINALLY on the board! Not a haul to write home..., er, on the Garage Sale thread about, but I'll take it!

The tiny vise (1-1/4" jaws) is a no-namer that will be a user. I very rarely find a clamp vise with a deep enough throat to fit on my old workbenches in the basement or out in the garage. It's tiny, but I have some tiny work from time to time.

The larger (2") clamp vise is a Luther. I have one of their 6" hand grinders, and I had no idea they even made vises. So it was a nice surprise and a no-brainer.

The blades on the offset screwdriver are turned 45*. As I am sure you guys know, that little twist can have a big effect on things, like better access angle reaching the screw on an antique doorknob. It might be home-made.

Nice find on the Luther vise, I hope to run across one someday since they were made in my home state of Wisconsin.

Estate sale find today. None of these were specifically mentioned in the ad, and all i really needed was the dado blade.

Both routers work, unfortunately the box and accessories weren't available for the craftsman but for $50 for all of it i am pretty happy. Now I can return the borrowed router I have been using.

I lost out on a lathe like that a year ago for $50 that was clean and had some extras with it, got delayed by 10 minutes, get to the sale when they were handing out numbers before the sale started, got a number, and the guy 3 numbers ahead beat me to the lathe.

Nice finds, gents. There's nothing nearby my little patch--sales, Craigslist, or any other app. I'm itching to get on the boards for the 2018 thread, but this weekend will be a wash. Instead, I'm in the garage fixing the exhaust on the pickup.

Today's, actually last night's find was a milling vise. It's heavy and from what I could find out, it's up there with Kurt. It is a 6" Abwood, made in England. Th vise can be removed from the swivel base, though I probably won't do that. The seller claimed that he never actually used it and the condition tends to agree.
Now I just hope it's not too big for my mill. 9de583103d1473efbe43c9bfce171a45.jpg1370f1e29309c99cad4483111eaf3bfe.jpg3f2b6cd85cfa6b880454c8f2fae23872.jpg

ALL: maybe part of the reason i'm having to empty one of my 20x20 storage units is i just can't easily pass up a good deal. i went to pick up a few pieces of FREE LUMBER that weren't what i needed and i had to ask if they had any old tools or stuff to sell.

here's what i found in their carport's shed that ended up following me home. i'm on the run and i'll take more pictures (and put them right side up) if anybody has questions just ask.

I probably didn't need any of this, but now that all my kids are homeowners or will be soon i'm sure a care package will find it's way to their garage soon after they move in.

cheers

Nice finds, gents. There's nothing nearby my little patch--sales, Craigslist, or any other app. I'm itching to get on the boards for the 2018 thread, but this weekend will be a wash. Instead, I'm in the garage fixing the exhaust on the pickup.

Yup, I'm still waiting to see any sales worth leaving the house for. Or, well, any listing worth looking at in 2018.

1" drive haul from a fundraiser sale. Picking logging country is :rocker:

From left to right,
2 Snap On extensions, 11 Snap On sockets
4 Williams sockets
3 Proto sockets
Wright extension
Bonney socket
Cornwell socket
Blackhawk socket

sockets from 1 3/8" to 2 3/4"

Cornwell socket is only the second ever piece of Cornwell I've seen in the wild.

I don't have a single 1" drive tool, i.e. ratchet or breaker bar.
Some of these are going to become keep-in-the-freezer shot glasses.

Oooooo ! I want to know how you make that happen !:bounce:
Do you drop a shot glass inside, or do you convert the socket somehow ?

^^ I order square head lag screws, weld them in upside down, cut/grind off the screw, and clean up the weld, clean and degrease. No cadmium finish sockets:shocking:

There were only two sales out there today, but I made them count!

Started with the estate sale that had a Craftsman tool chest listed- the chest turned out to be modern and bottom of the line, but inside?
I found my first Plomb wrench, plus an extension! And my first Barcalo! Also Craftsman nut drivers screwdrivers and wrenches, a punch down tool, some S-K wrenches, one Snap-On wrench, Midwest magnesium snips, a MAC punch, KD pliers and a couple of pocket knives. Left the toolbox, took the tools.
The garage had a few consumables I always grab- zip ties, storage hooks and a twist lock extension cord. Also got a set of drawer slides, cheap magnetic socket tray, a small tripod and a single mag molle pouch.

After that I figured I swing by the other sale- not expecting much since it was day 2 of a 3 day sale. It should have been picked clean, but.....
Walked in the door to see a full box of Craftsman tools just sitting in the kitchen! Almost a full set of metric and sae wrenches and sockets- no ratchets though. Plus a tape measure, some pry bars, pliers and other bits. I headed to the basement to find a Prentiss Bulldog 264 swivel vise bolted to the workbench- I walked right back upstairs, bought the box of Craftsman and used the wrenches to liberate the vise. I poked around some more in the basement finding a Craftsman staple gun, some saw blades, Crescent pliers and another old wrench or two.
Plus- in a coffee can I found a few super rusty sockets with familiar shapes- a handful of Snap On, some S-K and some MAC. Now I have projects for the Tool Polishing thread!

I'm glad I took the time to make that second stop- just goes to show that you never know what you can find!

Went to the flea market today and woah, the snowbirds are here in full force! It was like Mount Saint Hoveround erupted. Either that or it was the World’s Largest Geriatric Mixer.

:lol_hitti I hope that at least made you guys laugh a little.

Now I usually like to stroll and take my time, but it was waaay difficult to move through the rows with all the crowds and mingling, probably added an hour or better on my normal time.

This felt like my first real taste of the snowbirds this year. And I wonder why Floridians drive fast and wild ;)

In all that I managed to find some bargains for about 50 bucks.

Some Tapcon screws.

A bunch of wood chisels. A large Pexto, also in there are a few unmarked, some Buck Brothers, a Keen Kutter, a Bedford Hardware.

A Briar Edge hammer with Illinois Central RR stamped ( forgot the picture of the marking, I can take some if you guys want), a small Maydole hammer I already put to use repairing a plant stand.

Ratchets- unmarked 1/2” Walden, a really nice working Williams 1/2” Superratchet, a 3/8 Armstrong.
Wright 3/8 T handle
Xcelite ratchet handle
Bridgeport dbe
an odd broken tool with black Snap On handle- I searched the part # and turns out to be from a Honda terminal tool set. Maybe Snap On made them.

An odd little open end wrench.
4” Japan Angle Wrench adjustable

3 OTC chisels
A $5 bag of concrete bits

Colonial Folding utensils/knife Boy Scouts?

ALL: maybe part of the reason i'm having to empty one of my 20x20 storage units is i just can't easily pass up a good deal. i went to pick up a few pieces of FREE LUMBER that weren't what i needed and i had to ask if they had any old tools or stuff to sell.

here's what i found in their carport's shed that ended up following me home. i'm on the run and i'll take more pictures (and put them right side up) if anybody has questions just ask.

I probably didn't need any of this, but now that all my kids are homeowners or will be soon i'm sure a care package will find it's way to their garage soon after they move in.

cheers

Nice find on the Germany license plates.
