Thanks Lugz, do you have any thoughts on the male hex drives? Probably not the correct thread for that but I am curious. The box was probably the reason I caved on the deal. No welds from what I see. The corners are all tabbed together. The research I've done on AA talks about the G20 kit but not so much on the GC-20 kit. I don't expect answers but it would be cool to find someone interested in this set that has the desire to chase the history on them.

If you look in the wrench tables in catalogs, Machinery's Handbook, or an automobile or truck bolting chart prior to 1960 or so you will see that all wrenches and sockets with /32nd increments correspond to a U.S.S. bolt size. All the theories you'll see out there about special applications or metric equivalents are just plain wrong.

This could be sticky.
It comes up regularly.

Not sure what you mean by sticky. It does come up regularly, and I am not the only one who has pointed to milled opening to bolt size charts in old catalogs or in MH when it does. I am on record in the past saying that later, when bolting was standardized, and we still saw some /32nd openings, that it's possible that some of these cases were for mfgrs using anti-tampering on critical components. But it's kind of hard to argue with MH. It makes it clear that there were standard bolts and nuts that took /32nd increment wrench openings. No theory required.

Honestly, I didn't pay too much attention to them until you pointed them out again! I know of a couple male hex drive sets, but they don't look like that. Very unusual, and very cool. Sorry I can't be of more help. Is there anything inside the hollow opening of the male hex drive tang? Or is that a through-hole? EDIT: And what is the diameter/drive size?

The male hex itself is 3/4. As far as the drive sizes they are all about the same as the Hinsdale with 32nds . 1 inch down to 1/4 . I don't see a mfg. On them. The through hole is simply just that. 2 of the sockets are solid.

I meant could be a "sticky" thread that always appears at the head of the list.
Haha. Okay, I got it now. Epic misunderstanding.

Whoa. 3/4-inch hex drive? Curiouser and curiouser.

I got a couple different styles of wrench from Hinsdale.
Flat handle is double open end
Round handle is double box end.
I have a few 12 point sockets as well.

Whoa.....that flat shank is interesting. I have several, and one branded Wilde. Can you post more pics of that one?

took inventory of the large set.
sockets - hex drive, 4 point, 1/4 thru 11/16, 9 pieces.
hex drive - 6 point, 5/16 thru 1 1/16. missing 15/16. 16 pieces. 'oddball' sizes 19/32, 21/32, 25/32, 31/32.
missing 6 point 15/16 was 'made up' by using a 12 point 15/16. different vintage, as the tooling is completely different.
2 drag link bits.
1 bit, that has a 1/16 score in 1 end. theres a busted piece in there, pinned to the socket, #VGC.
2 beat up extensions, one is 1 1/8'', the other is an 'L', 6.5'' long.
t handle #TLC -1
speeder handle #DRC -1
someone cleaned up the set, most likely the ebay seller
hex by hex u joint. i cant read the numbers.

METALDAD. I just picked up bits and pieces ( 1 page back) of the same set you have. I can't tell from your picture if your box Is stamped or not. Anyhow I am not attached to mine and if you would like them I would send them to you for the cost of shipping. I am fairly sure I have the correct 15/16
Let me know.
BONNEYMAN, I couldn't pass it up even though I tried lol

Here are four DOE wrenches from an estate sale last Sunday. They are marked Chrome Vanadium so I assume that they are prewar or early war.

Almost half a set! That's a really nice one-fell-swoop find, because they're not exactly common. Hinsdale has been a onesy-twosy brand for me. Speaking of which, I will check what sizes I have in my stash in that style. Only one I think, maybe a couple with that dark steel finish. Might be able to help you fill that out.

Me too. Hard not to immitate Spiny Norman out loud when you spot some of the tools. Part of the attraction, in addition to the (intentionally ironic?) clunky style.
Only after seeing the Tom Hardy film, Legend, forty years later, did I realize Doug and Dinsdale Piranha were satirized from Reg and Ronnie Kray. Wikipedia asserts the same, also without citatation, violating their rule against publishing original research. Glad we don’t have such a rule here!

This thread reminded me that I’ve had these two hinsdale sockets rolling around in one of my boxes for some time.

Three Hinsdale DOEs followed me home today. They must have been from a numbered set: 15/16x7/8(#5), 25/32x3/4(#4), 15/32x9/16(#2). So now I’ll have to start searching for the #1 & #3, at least.

I'm not a Hinsdale collector, but pretty much had to buy this 1/2" drive 12 pt socket today. I'm assuming this is a Whitworth size as it is designated SR30W and size 59/64.

Well, LS, the good news is that I have a #1 (7/16 x 1/2 T.M. REG). You can see photos of it in this post in the DOE thread. The bad news is that I can't find it! So irritating! A BLUE-POINTS CHICAGO DOE wrench and a few more I can think of are also "missing". I suspect I put some in a box somewhere. I just have to remember which box and where.

As first reported on the 2018 Garage Sale thread, I picked up an early H-1 rocker ratchet, female, non-reversible, at the Early Bird this morning. Some close-ups not shown on that thread...

I picked up a couple of Hinsdale square plug sockets at the flea this morning. I'm not really building a set, and frankly, I left a bunch of other sockets behind, I see them so often, but I've never seen any of these before and I'm figuring they may not be easy to find.

I picked up a bobcat socket the other day. Good to know about the Hinsdale sourced.
