Traffic keeps me to a reasonable speed as I dream of vintage Snap-on rollers, unscathed Plomb oddities like a child dreams of sugar plum fairies at Christmas. I cut through neighborhoods, take side streets, hoping that I can park fairly close (at least within 2-3 blocks) and...

I did that last week. Showed up at 8:30am for a 7am sale and nothing, was one of my last planned stops on the day and I spent part of the drive home cursing people who post up sales and then don't follow up on them, only to get home and re-check listing and see it was posted for THIS Saturday. So this Saturday, they had the sale listing updated with pictures and I saw a bunch of sockets in bags labeled Proto, K-D, Craftsman and Gray along with a bunch of carry boxes and socket boxes, so I made it my first stop.

Ended up with this:
27212138557_bcba42b4ae_c.jpg

Starting from top left:
5 K-D sockets
4 Easco's
2 Husky's
3 S-K's
2 Britool British Wentworth sockets
Gray 13-piece 3/8" Metric set (missing the 16mm but with an extra breaker bar). Grabbed this quickly at the sale and started making a pile, only noticed at home it was metric, I'll call that a bonus as even here in Canada the metric tools are still quite rare at sales.
Will Comfo-Grip Philips #1 screwdriver
3 Challenger by Proto Canada sockets
4 Proto Canada sockets
Husky USA 3/8" drive 10" extension
2 Craftsman =v= sockets
Craftsman -v- socket and 1/2" drive extension
Indestro universal
3 Stanley Professional sockets
3 Craftsman -EE- extensions and a bunch of sockets. Should have paid more attention to the Crafstman baggie, but these are still going to be users until replaced.

Oh, and the requesite 2$ Beach hand box to carry it all back to the car, was the best condition of the hand boxes they had, I thought it was going to be a double of one I already have, but this makes it the 7th unique Beach box in my collection (for now). I resisted getting the old (grey) Snap-On box that was there, but it was in far worse condition and it had the wrong handle and hasps and locks.

Oh yeah, also got this wooden Canadian Tire creeper in great condition:
27212848837_b494532034_c.jpg

I've been looking for a wooden creeper to cut up and make a hanging wall shelf out of like someone else on here has, but this one is going to be a user it's in too good condition to chop up. Already used it yesterday.

55$ for all, not great but not bad either.

Second stop got me a Johnson framing square and Channellock ball pein hammer (first Channy non-plier too.l I find) for 2$. Will need a new handle for the hammer though.

Then went with a friend to his sister-in-law's house who was clearing out her deceased husband's stuff. Pretty picked over but did manage this :
42037120782_b9b45def40_c.jpg

Channellock 410 Nutbuster's
Unidentified drill gauge
2 Will screwdrivers made for Canadian Tire.
Giant wall-mountable pencil sharpener that escaped the picture, been looking for one to use in the garage for a while.
10$

It's tough to pick the best sequence of sales when all the ads just say "tools". I picked up these items at the first sale. IR impact gun is new $20, Palmgren milling vise $25, 12X16X4 granite plate $20.

When I get to the next sale a guy is already walking out with a box of SO and Matco and the seller's prices were cheap. I did get these cabinets for $25 and a pair of SO Ratchets for $5:

Forgot about this adjustable I got last week with some other tools, $0.50. I can't find much info on "NYE" tools, not sure on the age.

Going back a few weeks for me / first real tool type auction I’ve seen. It was a cluster - wish I had of skipped it but there were after a couple of select items I was after( nice vintage SO tool chest and top box & a Torin 2T cherry picker). Well prices were going very high even for the junk bundle of wrenches etc . Missed out on the box I was after everyone gave up around 170 except for another fellow and we went all the way up to 300 - in $10 bids - then he $5 out bids me and I make the dusting off hands motion as my initial limit was 300 on it. Still a good deal for a serious collector but plus tax&fees put it out of my good deal range. Then I had to wait till one of the last items the cherry picker which had a similar outcome and went up over 200 (lost interest in final number)! It did have a leveler with it but I mean they are like 250 brand new and warranted. I did get in on one deal which made the trip and half day of second hand smoke and shoulder to shoulder bustling not a complete grrrrr.

IMG_3493.jpg

Little torin big red box with some misc tools inside - I do like all the taps and dies as they are good ones and a special Ford carb one he put in a box and labeled-(was an old model t not for sale there). 1/4 SO clutch socket ?? Not sure about that one either. Winning bid of $30 near the end when the frenzy was in a lull.

Not a bad weekend for me. I picked up the Dunlop offset wrenches and a Plomb speeder for $5.50 and a folding bow saw for $3. The SK set I found while cleaning up at my grandparents house hidden in the corner of the garage.20180511_185742~2.jpeg20180511_185802~2.jpeg20180511_185807~2.jpeg20180513_155353.jpg20180513_155410.jpg

This weekend I headed out to a couple of garage sales to get some “kids ****” as someone put it as a dad I now actually search for some of these sales as the picker in me is always out for a deal. One posted on Craigslist had a picture of a massive plastic play set - just what we had been looking for but you wouldn’t have guessed that these things go as quick as a $20 Wilton bullet. So anyways I’m there right at opening and sure enough there is a couple already checking it out. They must have not been very interested as I quickly checked it out and made a great deal on it. While I was there there were some other scores to be had - moral of my story can’t rule out some kids **** sales now and then.

That they are....not a complete set but I guess that gives me a reason to keep going to auctions and looking.....the Craftsman and SK were all in the same flat and nobody wanted them (I guess not shiny enough)I put a bid in for five dollars and no one outbid me[emoji57]20180513_173540.jpg

Quite a collection of finds, gents--well done! I spent the weekend volunteering at the local town festival and then today out with my daughter at a Spartan Sprint race, basically an obstacle course over 5 miles. It was a lot of fun, but no time for sales. I'm keeping my eyes open, though...

This thread inspired me to check out my local flea market for tools. This was my first attempt.IMG_1125.jpg$12 total.
IMG_1127.jpg
Klein Tools lineman’s with crimping. Like new, some minor surface rust. The vendor originally wanted $15 for just the pliers.
IMG_1128.jpgIMG_1132.jpg
Older USA made Companion tack puller I believe. Companion was a Sears brand from what I’ve read.
IMG_1131.jpg
This one I have no idea. It has Taiwan stamped on it. It seemed useful to me, at the very least it will open a beer three different ways haha.[emoji481] I’m open to any advice you guys may have on what tools to look for. Are there any names or models that should be an automatic buy if they are a steal. I saw a Fuller screwdriver and I know that is a decent brand but I passed it up because I just wasn’t sure. It was only $.50.

The last one is likely a spray gun wrench used for taking off paint gun heads.

Tin, I was wondering what else you had hiding in that pile of yours! I was wondering where that Blue Point stuff went (Guy said I had the two/three SO's and there was one set of BP). Nice find on the Indestro box, and I had seen the green SK box peeking out of your box. My pile will get posted up tomorrow, when I have time to get it all sorted and cleaned. Hint: There are names like Starrett, Brown and Sharpe, Union, Lufkin, etc. See a trend?

Thanks alinc. How is the sole quality?

Fair. They usually take a lot more work to get flat, mouth is usually wide. Most "fine" woodworkers stay away from them and go with something that tunes a bit better. I.E. Old Stanley, Lee Valley/Veritas, Lie Nielsen but if your just cleaning up and edge or two every now and then it may become servicable. Or atleast a starting point to buy more:)

here's a quick Google result of a decent article:https://www.canadianwoodworking.com/tipstechniques/metal-hand-plane-tune

Cruzan, he let go of the BP reamer set pretty cheap. If I wasn't a regular he wasn't going to let the Indestro box go until all the stuff in it sold. Someone stole the SO reversible wrench from my box after I paid for it.

I hit two moving sales this morning. I had very low expectations but scored at both. Picked up three Kennedy boxes at the first one about 5 minutes from my home. The woman, a NPS volunteer like myself, was selling her home, buying and outfitting a Mercedes RV and hitting the road permanently. The Kennedy boxes were her deceased husband's. They all had tools in them. I paid her asking price of $25 per box plus all tools I was interested in outside the boxes were included in the $75 purchase.

The 2nd sale didn't have much but the tools she had in her pic for Sat were still available. No idea why. Her home was in a very upscale part of town. Anyway, piled some tools into a container and we agreed on $5.

Pic 5 are the tools I picked up for $5: string, Belknap driver, Stanley #110 block plane, Lutz 5-in-1 w/ torx bits, Stanley 175R keyhole saw, 4 packs of brads, Par-X DOE wrenches, tiny driver & two asian picks, Wiss snips, Thorsen DOE wrenches, Craftsman -V- DOE 19/32-11/16, small Cincinnati c-clamp and a thing I don't know what it is.

I'll post pics of the highlights of what was in and with the Kennedy boxes later.

Not bad for a Monday. :bounce:

PS I know nothing about Par-X tools. I recently read in this thread someone picking some up. Many folks collecting them? If anyone's interested let me know.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED!

CL find an hour away. Aluminum trailer box for a light mid 60's Apache Eagle tent trailer, sans the poles, pull out beds and canvas.

Color is "hunter orange" (sort of a red orange similar to the rattle can Chevy orange)

Needs a new plywood deck, new wiring (the lights are all still there), I need to sort out a key, and front latch lock, and press the right side lid into a semblance of straightness, and weather strip it.

THIS one should not be so easy to turn over; 5 ft wide, and 7 long. (Vs 40" wide track 36" wide box..) The car top tent will fit inside under the covers, so no more tarps. enough space inside to keep the rig essentially empty, other than my personal gear, and maybe tools and the like, even for week long trips! I may not even need the cooler rack on the front of the trailer!

attachment.php

You can see where a tree branch came done on the one side:

attachment.php

This rack gets scrapped:

attachment.php

And here is why I'm replacing the other trailer I wrecked: I'm sure the box is reparable but the car top tent sits on the lid, and its NOT light. the right side was crushed and split both riveted corner edges:

attachment.php

attachment.php

This is what it should look like:

attachment.php

And the rear "good" corner has a split too:

attachment.php

"New" trailer set me back $250. I'll have at least another $100 into it before its done.

Outlaw, that's a good trailer purchase. Camp Trailer 2.0 looks to be a good upgrade. I'm sure you'll get that dent out and fix the other items and this should still pull well behind your vehicle. Looks like you gain a lot of usable space here for not much money invested.

Sometimes even though we should have 'upgraded' sooner we don't want to. But when we are forced to because we broke the old one, things work out better in the long run and everyone is happier. ;)

Par-X was a "lesser" Snap-On brand a few decades ago. I think in the 80's. I have a 1/4" set from my grandfather that I still use.

I would've snagged that book if only for the illustration on the cover! Classic 50's! Check out the adoring wife and the band saw in the background. Please post another shot of the cover squared up with the four corners of the camera.

Just got back from a CL find, guy was trying to clean out one of his storage units...

Natural Gas Weber Genesis 3-Burner, Cover, and paperwork... $200

It's a 2013 Model, but super clean! Guy also had a charcoal Weber Performer that he sold and what he preferred. Said they only really grilled burgers & brats on the gas... lol.

I'm about to clean out the grill stuff in the bottom, but seriously this thing was always kept covered it never even got dusty, not any cobwebs in the bottom either! lol...

This thing might even get used tonight!

I looked in Alloy Artifacts and didn't find Par-X. I did find a thread on another garage related website that I've never visited. Someone had posted a Par-X ad. Thought I'd share it.

Probably J.A.F.E. on GG.

Par-X is a relatively little- to un-known phenomenon among collectors, even among some Snap-on collectors. They look very similar to Snap-on tools. I don't know of anyone on here who is a big bona fide collector, but guys have picked it up from time to time. I have a few pieces mingled in with my Snap-on sets. Calling them economy line is like calling Mercedes CLA Class cars economy line. Just sayin'. Not that I disagree. That was clearly the intent. But the differences come down to finish, and in some cases, materials. But not workmanship. It's not scratch and dent or sub-contracted. Which is why they are coveted by some Snap-on collectors, but also by guys looking for vintage users, because you can run into a bunch of it at an estate sale or a flea market or even on fleaBay from a seller who does not know it's made by Snap-on.

Lugz, it was more than finish in some cases. Sometimes whole steps in the process were skipped. The relief cuts on the bottom of the ratchet heads. And whole other processes were different like the treatments of the ratchet handles.

I would surmise that they did not want to make the cheaper product look too similar.
