I’m thinking that this might be the style of wrench that would have been on username’s new S-K board.
-Don

I think so too, Don. I'm not caring too much though about how they're marked. I've been picking up the SK, SK Tools, and the SK Wayne as well. Just want to tee the board filled up. :ninja:

Probably not exactly vintage SK, but was preowned, so not new.
Seems I now own my first quality, classic and classy 3/8"drive ratchet.

Before now, 3/8"stuff had been to me what perhaps 1/4"stuff is for most, not really used unless in the smaller sizes. So I have had a succession of mediocre 3/8 tools over the years, mainly of Asian origin, some good, some not so good and some just plain rubbish.
Anyhow, the pawls on my last Fuller Pro ratchet were getting pretty worn and the opportunity came up to get this 45170 at a very fair price. Don't often get the chance to play with SK tools here in NZ, so I grabbed the offer.
Must say, compared to a lot of other 3/8 ratchets, it has some heft to it, feels like quality and has seen very little use.
Well pleased I am.

Very nice! I think you'll be very happy with it. I have used S-K tools for ~30 years and have rarely been let down. If you haven't done so already, I would recommend taking it apart, cleaning it, then lubricate it with a very light duty grease (I use Super Lube on all mine).

Here are a couple of really old ones still working fine. I believe one is wartime and the other is prewar.

I need to go take a picture of my 42470 SK diamond. I believe it's from the 50s and still works great.

Trying to find some SK wrenches to fill the tool board that I posted a couple pages back. This weekend didn't disappoint.
1-1/8" and 3/4" combos, 3/8" &7/16" DBE, 3/8" drive 'Frankenstein' ratchet, 1/4" drive extension, and a handful of sockets.
Username, I picked up this C-18, 9/16 S-K Lectrolite combo today at an estate sale. Can you use it for your board?

Thanks for the offer! I'm all set on the 9/16, but I'm missing a significant number of wrenches for the board.
I'm most of the way there on the combos, only missing the C-14 (7/16) and C-26 (13/16).
I'm hurting bad for the long and short pattern DBEs. Easier to say what I've got that what I don't have. I have the B-1214 and the B-1416 (3/8x7/16 and 7/16x1/2).
DOEs, I've got 3 of the 8. I have O-3032 (15/16x1), O-1214 (3/8x7/16), and O-1416 (7/16x1/2)
Looks like the last set of pegs is for the 'flex combo' wrenches. Of which I have none...
A long way to go, but at least there are a bunch of weekends left of warm flea market weather to go this year!

I took the board apart so I could clean the pegs, but I threw some wrenches on it last night for a photo op.

Got it. I'm headed to a couple sales today, an auction and more sales tomorrow and will keep my eyes open.

Found this ARTISAN DBE at the flea this morning. I was conflicted as to put this in the SK thread, or Vlchek... I guess SK was only making drive tools at the time and sourcing their wrenches from elsewhere? :dunno:

They do have that Vlchek look don’t they? I cleaned up the early S-K Chrome and Brazil sockets you sent me. Thanks again.

Another prewar S-K socket arrived yesterday from eBay. It apparently hasn’t been used on very many drag links over the years.

New arrival. Topper to a larger SK 4-sided floor display. Holds wrench rolls #s 350-B 5 pc. SAE DBE Straight, #3 3 pc. SAE Shorty straight DBE, 1706-B 6 pc. SAE Combo, 560 6 pc. SAE DOE, 510 10 pc. SAE DOE.

These are all in rolls or pouches, so dig out your SK-Wayne and let's make a deal.1530107173967.jpeg

Great score! I don't have any rolls, but I'd be happy to trade any SK-Wayne wrenches on my board for SK or SK Tools branded wrenches. Or, even SK-Lectrolite for that matter.

Here's part of my still in use, vintage SK. I have some sockets but I think I have already posted them.

I almost forgot my favorite ratchet. It has the the lowest back drag of any ratchet and no slop in the head. If I don't need a lot of leverage, I grab this one. I have a 3770 and 3870 for more leverage but they're not vintage.

A question for you guys collecting the knurled SK sets. Which extensions are you putting with them? The older catalogs that I've seen don't seem to give a good illustration of the markings on the extensions for the socket sets of this period. I've been assuming that those with the diamond logo along the shaft are correct, but I seem to find a bunch that are marked around the female end of the ext. with just the S-K U.S.A. marking also.

The SK with the diamond logo. The very short ones are not marked that way.

All of my wartime 1/4” drive sets have no markings on the extensions, flex handles and crossbars. My postwar sets are marked with the diamond logo. Actually I don’t think any of the crossbars are marked but I could be wrong.

Thanks Don. That might explain why the war time catalog illustrations don't show markings on the extensions. Do your wartime flex handles have markings? I found one recently at a sale but didn't buy it because there were no markings on it anywhere. I need to check, but I think the one I have in my 1/4 set is marked.

Seems like a fitting time to post this.

It’s a modified S-K 1/4” 40970. They were used by Douglas Aircraft Company. All the others I’ve seen for sale online have had a Douglas stamped logo.

The input is the 1/4 drive ratchet, and the output is a 3/8 drive square.

It takes six pumps of the handle to complete one revolution.

Over the past couple years I’ve seen a number of these come up for sale, mainly by the same seller. When I saw this one at a fair price I decided to take a shot. It’s quite the neat contraption. It was only ratcheting one way so who knows how long it sat, but a little oil worked around in the mech. returned it to fully functioning.

My wartime flex handles are unmarked. I received this one recently in an eBay mixed lot. The sliding tee turned out to be Plomb.

Very clever indeed! Confined space application?

Don, I also should have asked about your orange spinner handles. Are they numbered or marked? I have a green/white 40954 in the set right now. Thanks.

They were shown in the 1943 catalog as an open stock item even though they weren’t included in the sets. With most brands of 1/4” drive sets they were a popular item. They are marked 40954. The solid green or green and white spinners are newer.

Thank you sir. I'll have to keep my eye open for the orange handled ones. I can find the green/white ones occasionally.

SK finds from today-
An older 45170 ratchet, a marked 6" 1/4" extension, and some knurled sockets.

I finally found a 40170. I went ahead and ordered the DT100 upgrade for it. The DT100 mechanism has 4 teeth on the pawl instead of just 3. I figured it would be stronger which is a plus on a 15" ratchet. The ratchet is in great condition. Perfect chrome and has the aggressive knurling that I like that the new ones don't have. If the new ratchets had the same kind of knurling, I most likely would have bought a new one.
