The 1929 catalog shows a 3/4 drive plug for the hd7 ratchet, but no 3/4 drive sockets. They actually don't list any 3/4 drive until the 32 catalog, but were obviously making them .

I have an "OOPS!" to report. Something about Otg's and snapmom's replies was unsettling, so I measured the drive opening of the 31/32" socket with the 1929, 1931, and 1933 date codes. It's 5/8-inch drive!

I have a couple projects laid out on my workbench where I normally inspect and catalog my finds in detail and this batch of tools never even made it into the house. When I said it was 3/4-inch drive I had literally taken a 1/2-inch drive hinge handle at the flea market and rattled it around inside the drive opening of the socket. I knew it wasn't 1-inch drive. I sloppily and absentmindedly assumed 3/4-inch drive.

My apologies for causing any temporary re-calibrations of vintage Snap/on 3/4-inch production understanding.

In looking again at your 5/8” drive socket, it does greatly resemble my 1927 31/32” version I posted upthread that you had originally dated for me.

That happens. 5/8 is not a common drive size. I see them listed for sale as 3/4 drive as often as not.

Here is the one I use as a pencil holder at work. It is the only really large socket I kept from the group I acquired. 7/8" Drive, 2-5/8" P series Industrial socket. 1930 date code.

bmwrd0, That is Fantastic! What are the chances? Without a doubt the most durable, hardest to knock over and spill, pencil holder I have ever had!

I use them like that too. you can cut out a piece of cardboard for the inside base. They make a good door stops also.

Now that one you just have to buy when you find it! I always try to get the ridiculously large tools when I find them. Just because... Have not had the opportunity on one that size yet...
I machined a plastic plug for mine. It was a slow day at work.

I make similar use of the largest socket I have, but it’s on my workbench, not at work, I put odds and ends in it, not pencils, and it’s not a Snap/on socket as far as I can tell.

You can see it in this photo of my Early Roaring 20’s sets, just to the right of the cathedral radio.

View media item 83935
I don’t actually know who made it. It has a 1-1/2-inch drive opening and a 3-1/4” hex service opening. It’s marked “INGERSOLL-RAND CO” on the bottom of the base with an Ingersoll-Rand part number (“IR-1045”), but Ingersoll-Rand was not in the tool business as far as I know, and it also has a large “X-38” (which reminds me of a Williams part number, but I suspect the Navy put it there) stamped in the base, along with its wartime customer marking - “NYNSY” (for New York Navy Ship Yard). I forgot all about that stamping!

Anybody know who made vintage Ingersoll-Rand tools?

Sorry for the thread drift!

That socket is one of the "I challenge you to try and break this" type. Look at the wall thickness around the hex. Certainly not made to fit into tight spaces. Same for Snapmoms, serious steel.

Love those heavy duty tools.

I used to have an OLD Heavy CP PowerVane 1" impact for truck wheels and Honda crankshaft bolts. Big workout doing a set of wheels with that beast. I can only imagine what the 1-1/2" units were like at that time. Really earned a days pay I am sure. But, lets get back to Snap on...
I will have to dig out the Blue Points pieces and put up a couple photos.

Cleaned up the rest of the haul. Have a pretty complete 1934 snap on 3/4 drive set now plus a bunch of extras if anyone is trying to finish a set. Last pick is extra stuff.

Great stuff! Keep it coming all.

This is an S-8682 distributor tool. 1957 date stamp. Found it in the 1958 cat., says for 1958 Ford and Mercury . For spring tension adjustments on centrifugal advance distributors. Forked tip slides over spring holding bracket, and bending bracket increases or decreases spring tension.

A couple of interesting special ratchets.

N 6202, long offset handle, 1/4” drive with a hole in the center, no hole for a retaining ball, open oil hole on top, 20 tooth.

I would love to find out what these were used for.

Hard to make out the date, it’s so small. I’m torn between, ‘59,’56,’49.

WWII Bell Aircraft Emergency Undercarriage Hand Crank, one with original spline shaft and paint. Based off the 1/2” ratchet.

The last photo is off the web. They were used in P-63 Kingcobra, possibly the Airacobra and others. There is another variation in some planes if I can find the photo but I don’t have an example.

Fastener demo display. Age???

One of my favorites, a special 1” drive ratchet or ratcheting adapter.

N-3325, based of the standard L-73 ratchet. 1952 date.
L-123 extension.
