That's a pretty neat idea for a thread for sure. Unfortunately, my situation doesn't apply. I guess I stink at telling a story, especially after watching an LSU game. :drink:

So I put a CraigsList ad up about a month ago after deciding to upgrade from my Atlas 12". I had no bites, but wasn't surprised as metal lathes are extremely scarce around here unless they're hogged out huge lathes too big for a home shop or the occasional Atlas.

There was an ad over in New Orleans Craigslist for a drill press (just about NOS Craftsman commercial) for $200 that I wasn't interested in, but they also had a second picture for a "lahte" for $875. After realizing what it was I attack dialed the guy and finally got ahold of him. I offered to be there in <= 1 hour with cash, but he couldn't meet me until the evening when I wouldn't be available to be an hour away from home. I wasn't going to take any chances of it getting away, so I told him as long as he took the ad down I'd give him $1000 first thing in the morning. He was happy with that.

He did say that even though the ad was only up for a couple of hours he got about 20 calls on the lathe...even though the title and primary picture was of a drill press, and that "lathe" was misspelled. Just goes to show you how competitive things are for things around here.

So long story short, the hail mary want ad I posted yielded no results but I randomly stumbled upon what I'd been looking for. Funny when you think about it. Fits Alanis Morissette's definition of irony for sure.

Thanks! I'll post the Channellocks up when I get a chance. The 200A is dated 2-73 and the 220J is dated 1-78. Nothing terribly old or rare. Got a local guy I think I'll sell them to in order to pay for the pullers and the vise that they'll hopefully get back to me on. Been radio silent for the last day.

I sleep at night with the Wiltons holding my bed down. They come in handy in hurricane alley

Picked up a craftsman 1/3hp grinder with stand and accessories this morning on way home from Philly.

I didn’t have room for the concrete block so I left it there. Paid asking price of $85.

Cart will be nice as I’m tearing apart shop and moving stuff.

Got the below from another seller, figured I’d give the first one time to unload some more.
2 USA clamps and a USA 1-1/2” hole punch.

It was a great trip, had to rush out as I was meeting wife for breakfast.
The t ratchet was worth the trip.

My daughter and I finished working on her '65 Malibu and wanted to take it out for a longer test run than around the block. So, Craigslist produced a garage sale about 20 minutes away, and off we went.

The ad was thin, no pictures and had "TOOLS" in the listing. It turned out to be truly a garage sale, with a few tables of junk and all three walls nearly floor to ceiling with shelving. I asked the old guy in the chair about tools and he pointed to a shelf behind a table. I had to shimmy into a tight space to paw through grimy boxes of junk, but I found some rusty gold.

Here's an E.C. Stearns saw vise with an Aug 22 1899 patent date. I've seen others on this thread post these but this is a first for me. I wouldn't have recognized it if not for this thread.

A pair of ball pein hammers, one a 12-oz Herbrand BP-12.

4-1/2" pulley and Crosby 5/8" chain shackle

Valley 2500-lb wire winch for me and low-flow shower head for the daughter's future house bus

The three Toyota wheel covers are for a yard art project for SWMBO. We turn these...

...into these!

As I made a pile beside his chair, the old guy asked again what I was looking for. I told him any old tools, but double box end wrenches in particular. He thought for a second, and then went and retrieved some from the basement. I scanned the tote and pulled out these:

Long-C Craftsman deep offset, Snap-on offset and early Craftsman ratcheting DBEs.

Two huge Blue Point Supreme DOEs
Fairmont tappet wrench DOE

A grab bag of unusual vintage DOEs: HM, B-something, Walden-Worcester, Walden

A handful of combos: Par-X, Blue Point, Plomb pebble

I had also found a Rigid pipe thread handle and two dies, one still in its box, seemingly unused. As I was sorting the wrenches, I saw the guy pull out his phone and start pricing the Rigid pipe stuff. Rut-roh, there's goes any You **** deal, I thought. Sure enough, he wanted half retail for the pipe threaders I had dug out of his stash. I passed, but gave his some free advice on how I had succeessfully gotten good money for those items on Ebay. He perked up and seem genuinely thankful, so maybe that softened him up a bit for the remaining items above. We haggled a bit, and I got him down to $45 for the lot.

We left and drove the Malibu back home and checked her out on the lift. She is still a bit moist around the radiator and the valve covers, but my daughter loves her car and is going to take it anyway for her senior year at college. I can't say No to that.

Same yardsale, I was driving past anyway figured I would stop and see if he found anything else. Wound up buying a few items for $6 total.

3 Craftsman 1/2" extensions
Craftsman 1/2" swivel
Proto 3/8 swivel
Walden 1/2" breaker bar (Shortest breaker bar I've ever seen) seems counterintuitive to me but made in U.S. and cool.
Glue gun with pack of glue sticks.

Pic 6: $60 Wilton C0 in just about new condition

A big "YOU ****" on the Wilton, looks great!

Those short flex handles can save the day were there is not enough room for a ratchet or wrench or a long handle breaker bar.

My dad is actually, hes been there on at least 10 different occasions. And spent over $1,000.

I wish I knew about his sale sooner the first day. He had a ton of Snap on hand tools that were gone before I ever got there.

First decent haul in a while - I saw this crappy little plastic toolbox with a bunch of trash and a few wrenches Dug in a little and found in amongst the disintegrating hard candies, sticky resinous substance, congealed tar unidentified?? some nice wrenches. There was a $2 Each tag on the box, but I took a chance (first day of the sale "No Reductions" - but also no surplus of customers) and offered $30 for the lot. She took it! :thumbup:

Then, of course, I wished I had offered $20.
I got 27 all USA wrenches, mostly Craftsman =V=, a couple of usable wood chisels and a few crappy screwdrivers. Pix are after some serious cleaning, soap and water followed by paint thinner and some e-tanking for a few rusty ones.

Late this afternoon I spotted a Craigslist garage sale ad mentioning tools so the neighbors and I ran to town to check it it about 4:00. It was the typical bunch of **** but the seller’s toolbox was sitting out and I talked him into showing me his tools. They were all pretty modern but I told him I was into old stuff and he mentioned that he had inherited a Snap-on set from his father recently and offered to show it to me, but he didn’t want to sell it. It turned out to be a fairly complete 1/2” drive New Britain set. He was surprised and disappointed to find out it wasn’t Snap-on so I said I was interested in buying it if he wanted to let it go. He took down my phone number. In the meantime my neighbor found a $2.00 test light and the guy had a chance to think about my offer and with a TINY bit of urging decided to sell me his inheritance. Here are some pictures. Just missing a few sockets but it has the correct wartime ratchet with the short control.

Several garage sales this last weekend where one netted me this great box of Snap-on Crows feet. The Klein linesman pliers and wire strippers I picked up from a guy having a tool sale but he didnt want to sell any tools...... I was lucky to get these from him!

Picked up these screwdrivers. I couldnt find much on the Blue-point models. They were unused and seem pretty nice. I dont know if they are vintage or just obscure. I tried to look up the part numbers and didnt find anything. If anyone has any info on them I'd love to have it. Thanks

bought this at a flea market sunday. you can't touch a real anvil around here being that every seller has them as "vintage" and want's ridiculous money. anyway, I paid $40 for it. it's 12" long and 6" high, it'll work for my needs.

I went to an estate auction about a half hour away on Saturday as there were a lot of tools listed. The quality and selection of the tools was disappointing and I only stayed for an hour or so. However, I did manage to snag this interesting pry bar for $2.
It is stamped with the name and three digit phone number of the local cooperative elevator. I'd guess it's easily fifty years old.

Looks exactly like the one I found a couple months ago except mine has "Imperial Casket Co." Maybe these were common promotional items back in the day.

Here is a 1/4" Craftsman ratchet that I have never seen before. I got it today from a pawn shop. $1! I will go back tomorrow and look for the stud.

Does anyone know anything about this ratchet?

I picked up one just like it in a large tool lot I bought at the first of the year....

Mine has the name FRANK ULMER LUMBER CO. ~ a local lumber yard that's now closed....evidently, some company offered these as promotional items that you could customize with your business name and number :dunno:

My wife and I left last Friday to go visit her kin folks up in Ohio.....

Saturday morning after our "Continental breakfast"

we headed 22 miles South to the Tiffin fair grounds for their flea market.

That part of Ohio being mostly farm land....most all the tools were older (rusted) tools used on the farm (nothing real exciting) but I did manage to pick up a (also rusty) 4" drill press vise for $3.50 and four 4 1/2" swivel/fully locking casters for $20

I've already cleaned the DP vise and I'm starting to clean up the casters that I might put on my 5 drawer HF tool cart....

I can’t let that slip by without a You ****! Someone can probably give you exact time frame, but as a general date 1930s. Great find for a buck.

We revisited the sale where I found my New Britain socket set and I invested $1.00 in this Bemis & Call 10” adjustable wrench. AA dates their example at 1915. It’s pretty worn out and possibly beyond repair but interesting nonetheless.

I hit an estate sale this morning that advertised "tools and more tools". Set my alarm for 5:30am. The sale was about a 30 min drive from the house. That's the earliest I've ever gone to any kind of sale. The reason? The Craftsman gray & red toolboxes. Thought they'd be an awesome complement to my CM gray & red 12-drawer roller and 12-dr top box. I'm first in line for almost an hour and a half. First one in the garage and I see sold on the tag! Hugely disappointed to say the least.

I still made out pretty good. I've been hoping to find a Henry Disston & Sons saw vise/clamp. Also, came across some Copper foil (16" x 3', 36GA) which I've been considering buying to fix a leak in the basin of a water fountain. This year I picked up my first chain saw - a Stihl 025. Now I have an Oregon chain saw file for it, assuming it's the right size. If not I'll sell it and recoup my $5. And also picked up an interesting container for whatever and a Craftsman Crown set of metric hex keys. Set me back $30 rudabegas.

The Disston saw vise/clamp looks complete except for one screw to lock the saw blade in place. Everything moves easily and as it should. It doesn't have a number (No 1 or No 2). It also has a pretty wide gap versus other Disston saw vises I've seen. Anyone know any particulars on this model?

TX, that organizer is for resistors. Std decade count values, I think for 10% resistors.

Thanks Outlaw! I was gonna google that but hadn't yet. It will come in handy for some kind of spare parts. Maybe that bunch of toggle switches I recently picked up.

Edit: Nah, the toggle switches are likely too wide.

Very strange. Technically, all that space is wasted, unless it's meant for something other than saws. Not only have I never seen a Disston saw vise like that before, I haven't seen a saw vise like that from any other mfgr, either.

We are talking about the same thing right Lugz? That 1-1/4" "gap" underneath where the saw blade clamps?

I wonder if we have any Disston saw vise aficionados here or maybe I should create a thread in the vintage tool forum?

Probably clearance for the handle so *** doesn't need to be removed to sharpen the teeth at the handle. Wont work for all setups, but for many.

Got this cantilever craftsman box. Any idea when it's from? 60s/70s?

I know craftsman had a lot of grey boxes, but it sure looks red where the grey paint is damaged.

I'm in Canada so sears might have sourced them somewhere else. (I know beach made some craftsman chests here).
