Lug: thanks for the FLASHLIGHT FLEA POST. since it's now NOVEMBER are they still there or have things moved indoors now?
My Thursday and Friday first stop fleas have vendors outside all year long. In fact, the fall and winter months sometimes produce some of my best finds of the year. The china/toys/clothes/LP's/video games sellers and buyers don't venture out. Out of 20 or so vendors in the winter months, more than half will be tools, militaria, and other good stuff. EDIT: The buildings are full of full-time shops, so there's no moving inside. And they shut down after Christmas anyway.

My Wednesday flea, which is also my second Friday second stop flea, just closed for the year. They chain it.

3 Bonney, 4 New Britain, and a couple M.H.T.Co.. one has a Lakeside Forge keystone mark. I know these came up a while back, maybe in this thread. The bent one looks like it was made that way, it’s also different with the sizes on back and no Lakeside mark.

Arne: good question and I always thought it was a Craftsman and haven't looked that close to it. you might be right that it's a SPEEDAIRE so i'll check and see. I bought out a guy's garage that was full of Heritage Craftsman stuff a while back and probably always had in my head that the compressor was a Craftsman too since they make one that looks close to this. or maybe I just thought since it had a Craftsman motor that it was ALL CRAFTSMAN. I bet you are right though.

That likely is a Craftsman, Sears sold those with a Craftsman base with that Speedaire compressor bolted to it. The original base may have been rusted or otherwise damaged. Plenty of pictures of them with a Google "vintage Craftsman compressor" search. I haven't found a catalog with that in it yet, the paint sprayers are in the pre WWII catalogs but don't match and the post war Craftsman Power tool catalogs no longer have paint sprayers. I do have a 1952 Craftsman Handbook "How To Spray Paint" that has the later compressors like mine that has Craftsman cast into the compressor. So yours is likely post war late 1940's.

Stopped by an estate sale this morning, it didn't look too good for tools, but they showed a lot of reloading equipment and the garage looked like it might be interesting. Got there a couple hours after it started, which is OK with me as I don't really want to fight with people for anything interesting. Well, it turns out that there was a lot of good stuff but priced higher than I wanted to pay. I had picked up a couple screwdrivers to at least make it worth my while to have come when I spot this.

open it up, and this greeted me

$25. Didn't have to think twice. Got home with it and pulled the non-Hinsdale out, there was surprisingly little garbage and not much non-Hinsdale, it was mostly stuff I needed for something else.

I think it is complete, a 9/32 and 3/8 refrigeration set. Even has the adaptors so you can run regular sockets with the refrigeration ratchets. In both sizes!
Here are the extras that were in it.

A Williams refrigeration ratchet, a Craftsman -V- extension and a bunch of Proto.
And I was looking for a good refrigeration set.

Pic 2, Lugz, I was surprised to find an Arcturus, though altered. The one below it is interesting too. Marked RT USA. 28 TKKX3B. A search broght me to the military board. Maybe you can shed some light.
I'm on my phone in an airport and can't open or blow up the photos. I can see them and expand the whole screen but it goes fuzzy. (Drives my email buddies nuts, too, sorry.) What is the FSN on the Arcturus? And how has it been altered?

The TKKX3B wrench is prewar to wartime. US Ordnance Dept. From historical documents we know they (supply chain guys) called those stock numbers "taxi" numbers, informally, because the first one in the series is TAXXX1 or something like that. And they all start with T and have lots of X's in them. I always pick them up at fleas. Probably have a dozen or so. They're not really worth anything special unless they're in jeep or GMTK or some other toolset sizes.

Beemer: Love the Hinsdale reefer set. I have a Hinsdale 3/8 drive set in the same type/style box, with the same exact logo embossed in the lid. I've posted pics and discussed on the GJ Hinsdale thread. Also a wanted thread. If you figure out the production year, let me know. We don't really have good catalog coverage. You should post your reefer set there, too!

Well, I took all of your advice and found an estate sale through Craigslist, I did pretty well.
Picked up 3, 3/8" SK Ratchets, 2 Indestro 3/8" flex-head ratchets, a few Snap-on/SK extensions, 2 SK boxes, and miscellaneous sockets/extras. All for $20!

You could cut food with that end! (I sprung for the inflight Wi-Fi. Couldn't wait to review the danged tool boards on the new Tool Board thread!)

BTW, your military "TAXI" number wrench is kind of unusual. Typically they are stamped. With everything being forged in, hinting at some serious production, I would say that thing is probably prewar, which is really cool. The "RT." is nagging at me. It'll come to me. I want to say it's an arsenal. Rockford maybe. But the T is eluding me. I have an Army "TAXI" wrench with "RIA" on it (Rock Island Arsenal).

We finally found some likely looking sales on Craigslist but at the first two sales they wanted to sell complete toolboxes for top dollar. We found a very few things at the second sale but things started looking better at the next sales. The best one was the last one that was 10 minutes from home. The pictures are in order of sales. The fifth picture is all Thorsen and Action, the sixth is S-K and the last one is the PowrKraft DOE roll cleaned and only missing one wrench.

Great haul! If you want to get rid of any 1/4” Thorsen sockets I am looking for a few to complete my set. Let me know.

I’m pretty sure that they are all 3/8” and 1/2” drive but I’ll double check tomorrow. I found some tools from the Plomb/Proto empire as well. The first shot is Proto, the second is P&C and the last is an extension I needed for my postwar Plomb 3/8” drive set.

I haven't been to a flohmarkt in a while and the location this week normally isn't very productive. I managed to get pair of Channellocks for 3€. I left a Stahlwille DBE 20 x 27 mm in nice shape for 5€ ($6) because I already have one and will likely never use it. I know this is probably a violation of the spirit of GJ and especially this thread. I did circle back at the end and get the raised panel VV 12 mm wrench for a €. I for some reason can't pass up USA tools when I find them in Germany. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the SK raised panels a few months ago.

Of course, the wrench that's missing is the 7/16-1/2".

Been after one of these for a while now ... Dake 1 1/2 ratcheting 3 ton arbor press. Was a four hour round trip before the break of dawn, but much worth the hassle at $100.59242f88fc01a2f3fa8c08547c51b6ef.jpg

Estate sale advertising tools, go to estate sale and they said they weren't selling the tools until two weeks from now. I wanted to tell at that lady for false advertising but I didn't. I'll go back if I'm in town since it's only 2 blocks away.

Mrs LS & I stopped along rt222 on our way to Albright for a swim meet. Tried to buy a 1/2dr Plomb pebble ratchet, a 1/2dr and 1/4dr Cman butterfly rats, but I did not have $40, nor would I have paid that for them. The 1/4 was frozen and had a gouge on one corner and the 1/2 butterfly was pretty deeply scrawled on. The pebble rat is just a sad casualty to a failed bundling attempt.
So I spent $14 on some random junk. One Craftsman screwdriver, one Stanley screwdriver (wasn’t able to make out the brand until after purchase; had thought it might be Bonney). Herbrand 1/2dr rat. Pexto linemans. Matco socket holder, patented wrench hanger made by JTBaatz&Co. Cman chain nose pliers, semiset of Barcalo autokit wrenches, 6pt Hinsdale sockets, a Toyota 14x17mm DOE, and a few other odds and ends.
Also spotted this nifty top chest, but the badge is missing; not sure of the maker?
Edit - here’s the Baatz wrench-holder in action. It’s missing the scissor-spreaders, but screwed to a board, it should work just fine. Indestro combos fit real well; Bonney had a couple fit issues, particularly an atypically plump 15/16”!

Well, this week was a bomb. (Got a small handful of items though)

For one, there is this yard-sale-scalper in the area. Smug little _ that runs around to all the sales before they open, grabs all the good tools/grinders/chests, and then goes and sells them at his own sale.

I was going to try two separate sales last weekend, but the first one I went to had no sign of even being there which discouraged me from visiting the second. I went to the second one the next day and I may have missed out on a vise, maybe. Today I went to an estate-sale that was open yesterday too, but the stupid local classified site didn't show it. I went there and guess who had gotten there the day before and cleaned it out!

WTF,O? :wtf:

I wonder how far the drove before they realized it wasn't on their roof anymore!

Or was it thrown away because, um, er, because people are idiots and it has one little thing missing or broke they couldn't figure out?

I hit three estate sales today, the first of which was the best. I was 54th in line at the open-got there only 15 minutes early, but it was a cold, dreary day, so not as bad as I'd feared. The one thing I was after was still there: a 1/3 hp Block grinder with tool rests, eye shields, wheel end covers and a steel-shaded light! Priced $32, I grabbed it. It's covered with paint spatter, but runs smooth and true, and all the mounting points are intact. The rubber feet are missing, but they're cheap and easy at Lowe's. The vise under all that paint spatter is a 70's vintage Craftsman 3 1/2", and actually in good shape. A stripping and repaint will do it wonders. Then amongst the miscellaneous junk I found the set of Craftsman sockets - metric 3/8 9-19mm - and my very first Flying V!.
The total of the marked prices was $52, but even though it was First Day No Deals, the guy glanced at it all and said $40. The checkout line was starting to lengthen, and I guess he wanted to move it along rather than count up every penny.
Second sale yielded the Cincinnati clamp and my favorite deburring tool, with 2 spare blades, for $1.
The third was a bust except for a drill press. At $100 I thought it was way high, and they weren't bargaining. A benchtopCraftsman DP100?? with the globe logo. Looks like Delta onion-top, original motor, no center pulley or Vari-Slo, in nice shape. Sorry, I didn't take a picture since I really don't need it.I may go back tomorrow and grab it if it's still there at $50 ... opinions?

I went to his sale for the first time not too long ago.

Here’s the thing....he flips for not much markup, he’s very receptive to bundling,
it’s almost like he’s doing the work for me. I’ll be back as often as my schedule meshes with his sales, it’s like a one stop tool pick. Ill gladly pay him a few bucks to not sort through baby clothes and Avon perfume bottles.

I even put him on commission so to speak, he said he never messes with arbor presses, and i told him that i was a guaranteed flip if he finds me one.:)

The drill press I mentioned a few posts back looks pretty much like this one: No center pulley or Vari-Slo.
Any thoughts about grabbing it at $50? (it's priced at $100 today)
Wild optimism thinking it may still be around tomorrow!

I've been to his sale a couple times too. I agree, the prices are good and in fairness he is a friendly, negotiable fellow. But I'm not getting a chance to find a good vise I've been looking for, and no one is going to resell a REED or Parker, etc. for "not much markup". lol.

BTW, his last sale was a little out of my way so I didn't get to it, but it looked like he had a Baldor bench-grinder in his CL pic. I wonder how much it sold for (I assume a nice item like that would have sold quickly).

Bob, Its an Atlas built Craftsman if I'm not mistaken, and well worth $50 if the quill isn't bent...

Thanks, Outlaw... yes, I'm a tiny bit concerned about the quill. It moves very nicely in the middle of its travel, but has some light drag at both extremes. It doesn't retract by itself the last half inch or so, but then the return spring is set very light... Hard to say, but on balance I don't think there's anything serious going on there.

I hit the NW biggest garge sale, which is a lot of junk with a little bit of good stuff. I found the following (except the switch.)

Set of Bondhus drivers (it has two 1/8 and no 5/32, so I gotta look for that) a Starrett 64 in box (she was selling the box with junk in it to her) a long C DBE (missed in the pic), a couple Snap-on sockets and a 5/32 Snap-on ignition wrench. Then I went to a tool sale by a guy who knew what he had, so no bargains. That is where I got the On/Off switch and this

A little paint damage on the inside, but other than that it is pretty good. Even has the dividers!
